I see the christmas slow down has started
It seems to be an anual feature with NTL/Virgin. Come Chistmas something packs up and its not fixed until after boxing day.
This year as Sunday is near Christmas it's started early with slow if any browsing |
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
OK so far in South Wales.

Fine In Birmingham 20Mb
|
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Felixstowe: went completely there. Hopefully that was it.

Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
In East London my normally excellent 4MB speed went down for an hour and now seems to be fixed at 1MB.

Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Sounds like you've been Traffic Managed - have you downloaded over 750MB since 16:00?
|
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
What Christmas slow down ? my Slowband sorry  Broadband is in the slow lane all the TIME
|
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Thats a me too. I did down load a video & now i've been managed to:
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/12/5.png As it's now down to less than 1meg I'm no longer on high speed broadband. |
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Shhhhhh its not just a glitch its a conspiracy - they planned it for Christmas, less 50p's in the meter.
|
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Seems as if a few people are being STM'ed - nothing to do with Christmas, methinks.
|
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
no problems in cardiff for me anways
|
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Only getting about 7Mb/sec instead of 20 at the moment. It's before 4pm so should not have any throttling/STM.
I think the basic problem is everyone is off work and using their broadband, and the network simply can't cope. Can you imagine how much fun this is going to be once all the 4meg people go up to 10 and 50meg rolls out? |
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Children aren't in school and lots of people at home having finished work for the holidays. = Contention on Baguley server worse than ever.
Downstream...1148.15 Kbps Upstream...375.27 Kbps on my 4MB BB having done no downloading and it's not even 4pm yet.:( |
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Tell me about it! I've been down for ages, i keep going offline for a few hours at a go!
Really starting to annoy me. I'm on Bagueley too, are we the only ones that get hammered? I've got 800ms pings on loads of websites, google.com is between 200ms and 800ms and external sites have me at 150ms for pings. Download rate is 16.7kbps or 160k. I should be at 400k but i never get that these days anyway. https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/12/4.png I even changed my DNS, as that used to be the problem five years ago. But that didn't really make it much better. Virgin really have messed up this network. Has this hapepend before? Technical support were a pain in the ar**. Cheers, |
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
Happy for now in Swinton/Manchester

It may be a different frequency but that isn't the problem. The problem is that Virgin's network is too slow and external bandwidth is not enough. When an area gets slow, it's because the bandwidth from the local routers to the main Virgin network is not enough, and when everything gets slow it's because the main Virgin network does not have enough bandwidth. |

It will be interesting to see if the price and terms for the new 50Mb will lure the 20Mb heavy down loaders and whether their migration to Docsis 3 will reduce the contention on the Baguley server. |

What I would be interested in is a better upload speed. It would be very useful for online backup/bittorrent/etc. Reports at the moment suggest the 50meg will have an upload speed of 1.5Mb, which is a joke really. |
Re: I see the christmas slow down has started
My usage of the internet is quite modest and I have been able to work around the STM to a large extent. Upping my BB from 2 to 4Mb has sorted me out but it would be great if I could drop back down to the lowest tier and still be guaranteed a usable connection at a more reasonable cost.
I wish I had a crystal ball and could see what our service will be like over the next 12 months. :D Mind if I had one I would just check next weeks lottery results and buy out Virginmedia, recable Manchester, get a new computer ,...buy a dessert island.........https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2008/01/11.gif |

No-one in their right mind pays full wack for Virgin services when a single phone call gets you a massive discount. I pay £25/month for 20meg. |

btw, if you do try this, may I suggest you don't "demand anything" - asking nicely often works better (imho). |
