I'm sorry but most readers of Tolkien have had a humour bypass and would rather a 'serious' actor was chosen. ;)

I must admit it has been well over fifteen years since I last read this properly, so I look forward to the films with interest. But I suppose I'd better see if I can find an audiobook version.

Re: The Hobbit
If i can remember back to when i read the books, the "Hobbit" was a thin-ish book and the "Lord of the Rings" was 3 bigger books. So how are they going to make two films out of the "Hobbit" ?

Re: The Hobbit
Heard about this on the radio, newline cinema paid the up front of £32k and has renegged on the reas of the deal which was 7.5% of gross box office takings plus a precentage of aftersales DVD's but not merchandise.
Also the Tolkein estate want to remove the licence for the 2 hobbit films from newline cinema as they feel they will not get any monies agreed for the films. I agree with the estate, why should they trust newline with the Hobbit. |
Re: The Hobbit
so that explains why bill baily has gone off to skins instead of waiting for his hobbit part

Confirmed: The deal is done. Guillermo del Toro will be directing The Hobbit, which will be done as two back-to-back movies. del Toro previously directed Cronos, Blade 2, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrith, and Hellboy 2, amongst others. A good choice, I think :) |

Re: The Hobbit
Finally, can't wait to see this!Especially since they are using the new RED EPIC cameras that can shoot at up to 5K/120fps!
This should look amazing in 3D! (or 2D for those who don't like extra dimensions ;) ) |

'I kick a*** for the Lord!!' :D Jackson said they were remastering his older films to be released on Blu-ray,but so far nothing... :( Meet the Feebles is also excellent, imo. :) |

Besides, the sensible time to re-release LOTR would be after The Hobbit is out, for maximum exposure and interest levels. |
Re: The Hobbit
Quote:
Just checked,BrainDead has been released on Region A (North America) Blu-Ray,so that seems done. :) Not sure if the films are even being remastered by WETA,but anyhow it wouldn't have mattered cause Jackson anounced the new masters when Guillermo del Toro was still supposed to direct The Hobbit. They've been worked on for a good while... LOTR films will be converted to 3D in the not too distant future.... work which won't be done by WETA,but hopefully supervised by PJ himself. |

The Hobbit films will be the technologically most advanced films to date, can't wait for these. 4K 3D at 48 frames per second... that'll be heaven for me!! :D |
Re: The Hobbit
a good few of those who have seen some in 48 frames have not liked it
|
Re: The Hobbit
Quote:
I know people complained about the footage looking too realistic, but that is more down to the higher resolution than the frame rate. Also,3D and 48 or even 60 FPS are a good match because it reduces general eye strain due to reduction of motion blur in fast paced scenes. Can't wait to see what these technological advances will look like when combined. |

Peter Jackson confirms that The Hobbit will become three films.:hyper:
http://www.totalfilm.com/news/peter-...me-three-films |
Re: The Hobbit
I'm encouraged to hear him give the reasons why he's been able to make a trilogy out of a single book that was considerably shorter than any of the books in the Rings trilogy. Can't wait to see what he does with the extra material from the Appendices.
|
Re: The Hobbit
Perhaps he can include all the parts of LOTR that he left out..but making a trilogy out of a days read does seem somewhat of a magical achievement.:erm:

I wonder when the LOTR will be converted into 3D,can't be that far off now.IMO,it would make for a nice, uniform viewing experience. :) |
Re: The Hobbit
I wonder how long each of the 3 films will be?
I saw TLOTR in the cinema on release and each was around 3 hours, I have since bought the 4 hour versions. |

However I fail to see how a day's read book such as the Hobbit can possibly be made into a trilogy and I was facetiously suggesting that maybe Jackson was going to use the material he rejected from LOTR in the Hobbit. No need to take issue with me at all.. |
Re: The Hobbit
No issues, just curiosity, as I said ^
If I'm hearing right, the Hobbit trilogy is not simply the novel of that name committed to film, it's the wider story of Bilbo and the other characters as revealed in both The Hobbit and Tolkein's Appendices. |
Re: The Hobbit
That makes sense as Frodo is in it and he was not in The Hobbit at all
|
Re: The Hobbit
Right,we're getting close to this now.
For anyone who's interested in seeing this in HFR 3D,as it is the way Peter Jackson intended you to see this I suggest you do,here's a list of theatres Odeon have confirmed so far. I will update the list over the next 2 weeks as it is NOT final! Blackpool Bournemouth Brighton Chelmsford Dundee Dunfermline Glasgow Quay Hatfield Kensington Kingston Lincoln Norwich Trafford Centre Tunbridge Wells Wrexham Eagles Meadow |
Re: The Hobbit
Watched it this afternoon. It was bloomin' brilliant!

Obviously not giving much away Lew was it as good as the films from the trilogy?.

Re: The Hobbit
All I'll say is: it's good go see it, it's lighter in tone than LoTR but it's nice that there's familiar faces and it has the Peter Jackson LoTR universe 'feel'
I'll not go into more detail cause although I'm dying to, it's only been out a day, and not many will have seen it yet. I saw it in ordinary 2D and it still looked as good as the LoTR cinematically, so it's not the poor cousin compared to 3D |

Re: The Hobbit
I watched it in 3d HFR and I can understand where the criticisms come from but I think the picture was really good. I watched another movie straight after and the poorer visual quality was quite jarring.
|
Re: The Hobbit
I haven't seen any films in HFR yet but to me, 24fps is too slow for today's large cinema screens. Panning shots in particular look quite jerky to me at 24fps.
|
Re: The Hobbit
Amazing film,48FPS 3D is the future of film,no doubt.
|
Re: The Hobbit
I went to see this. I didn't notice the higher frame rate, I was watching in 3D but didn't notice it...
I think they have messed up in making it three films. I don't it works and it feels rather confused and padded. It's also looking like The Hobbit itself, i.e the book, will have been completed in the second film so who knows what the third film will be? |
Re: The Hobbit
Well didn't Tolkien have notes that he planned to use to expand The Hobbit after LOTR was written? It was mentioned on The Colbert Report (think it was that show) that Peter Jackson mentioned that they were using notes that Tolkien had written to expand the story.

Re: The Hobbit
Well they shot it in 3D so want to get the most amount of money from it.
I've a ticket booked for a HFR 3D showing tomorrow morning. It sounds interesting due to having no motion blur during fast moving scenes. I imagine if it works out then action movies will benefit from the HFR the most. |

'The Hobbit' Wins The Holiday Box Office
http://www.forbes.com/sites/dorothyp...ay-box-office/ http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmb...-pi-box-office Impressive to say the least. |
Re: The Hobbit
I still haven't seen this. I'm going to try and go this weekend. Standard 2D, though, as none of the cinemas in Cambridge are showing the HFR version and that's the only thing that would make me willing to pay for 3D.
I'm still confused as to how Jackson is stretching it out to three films. OK, I think he's using the LOTR appendices too for some stuff, and adding some of the things that would've happened "off the page" in The Hobbit, but still... three films? |
