E-mail Spam

Has anyone noticed an increase in the number of spam e-mails they are getting through recently, which are not marked as spam.

I have had numerous offers for didgy watches, tablets etc, which only started earlier this week.

Is there something wrong with Virgin's Spam filter?

No difference noted here. Sounds more like your addy's been harvested or sold by someone.

Well it seems funny that two of my addresses would of been harvested, but then agian who knows.

What gets me though, is that they are obviously spam, and Virgin's apam filter is not spotting them.

Also some of the mails, do not have either e-mail address on them, they have something like 'cheeky2001@ntlworld.com' so I am unsure why I receive them.

Your address will be one of many in the "BCC" line.

Typical, forgot that, though I am trying to find out which address is really being spammed, and that does not help.

I have noticed an increase lately but only getting 1 or 2 per day, still infinately better than the 100+ per day I was getting a couple of years ago. VM/NTL spam filtering is still working well for me!

However after I joined FaceBook the Hotmail address I used for that has been bombarded with SPAM, before FaceBook that Hotmail address hadn't had one item of SPAM in 3 years!!!

I have noticed a huge increase in spam in my accounts. Before I never got any!
Either my address has been added to a list or the spam filters are not working.

Yes, I'm getting a load of SPAM quite suddenly. It's not huge, so far, but it did appear out of nowhere a few days ago.

The most worrying aspect is it's absolutely obvious - a real no-brainer for even a poor spam-checker, so what's happened to the VM checking?

Might as well tag on to the end of this thread...

Does Virgin have any sort of outgoing spam blocking service and/or policy? I need to bulk-email about 400 people and don't want to (a) have the email blocked or (b) get into some sort of trouble.

Can't find anything on their website (so what else is new?)

400 emails won't be a problem, as long as you have made sure they want to receive your emails.

HTH.

Well, actually, I'm sending out the 400 emails to ask them if they'll agree to receive 400 emails...

No, seriously, thanks, I didn't think it'd be a problem, it's not as if 400's a huge number. But you never know.

Ah, now if you are mailing people who are not expecting to receive your email, then they could complain to VM, and then you will come under the scrutiny of their abuse team, so you need to be very careful.

How did you obtain the email addresses?

That was my thought as well, it is though VM spam checker has hiccups every so often and allows spam through!!!

VM for ex ntlworld addresses uses the Brightmail spam filter system. It learns new spam attacks and then adds the appropriate rules to block them.

It is not unusual therefore for some spam to get through from time to time.

Well it must of forgotten about old methods then.

I have downloaded SpamFighter, and it recognises about 95% of the mails as spam correctly!!

I joined with Blueyonder and after a good quiet spell over the Autumn, I too am now getting several a day, typically for expensive watches, jewellery or for dodgy tablets/chemicals. Admittedly I was on the lowest of the three filter settings, but have changed it up to the middle one and yet they are still coming through regularly. Am reluctant to go up to the highest setting in case it stops genuine emails.

I didn't say it was perfect. :)

I get the Brightmail system to move emails it marks as spam to a "Spam" folder, and over the last 7 days it has correctly identified 245 spam emails and let 3 through that my Thunderbird email client picked up.

Nope, its not perfect. ;)

Have a look at your spam settings in the web mail interface. Maybe something got changed ??
