Adios Virgin. Roll on SKY!!!!

After two months of speeds "up to 20Kilobit" i finally got my SKY Broadband connected today and boy what a difference it made. I have Sky Max which is "up to 16MB" and so far i have had a solid 14MB speed no matter what the time. And my line stats are perfect. I was lucky enough to be only 1km from the exchange but so far so good. So happy i switched to SKY.Better TV service as well. I could not recommend SKY enough to everyone that has problems with Virgin Media.

mortakos, what's your "estimated" line speed? Mine says 6mbit, but I'm only 950m away from the exchange.

Paul K 07-12-2007 14:06

Re: Adios Virgin. Roll on SKY!!!!

950M from exchange as the crow flies or straight line? Can be a big difference in distances. Also that is only a small part of the equation for what speed you get.

He wouldn't have had the guts to come on and say if he had made a mistake, how do we know you're not just saying that because what you got is crap and you're too embarrased to say so.

Re: Adios Virgin. Roll on SKY!!!!

Here are the statistics from my router.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16379 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.5 db 11.1 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 17.0 db

My physical line length is about 1km. My straight distance is 560m.

And why would i lie about my speed? My latest speed tests at peak time show me a download speed of 14MB and upload of 650KB. Not only i did not make a mistake but i wouldn't be happier. The last two month with VM have been nothing but nightmare. With speeds that were barely touching 1MB at peak time and constant disconnections.

I've been telling them the same for ages mate, they wont believe you though, rose tinted specs you see, half of them still dont care about Sky One, Virgin one is the mutts though apparently ;). My Sky BB has been wonderful too, im about 2k from the Exchange but i still get a solid 9.5mbps on Max too and for a tenner a month its a bargain.

Re: Adios Virgin. Roll on SKY!!!!

Could not agree more with you. I am not even going to refer to the TV services and how superior the quality is. Even when i had Virgin BB in my previous house for 5 years i still had SKY as my TV provider. And Virgin 1 cannot even compare to how better SKY 1 is. Besides, being on SKY i get both :D. And as far as billing is concerned, i pay 28 pounds/ month and i have MAX BB which is very stable, full TV package, and also Sky Talk. So all in all i pay 39 pounds (including my BT line rental) about 15 pounds less than what i was paying for the appalling service from VM. On top of that SKY even paid my BT installation for 125 pounds. What more can someone ask from a provider? If as you say they won't listen it is not my problem. But at the same problem i don't want to be called a liar just because my services look too good too be true.

wow
well SKY offer free install which I guess you had.
Thats £90.00 of equip and install charges. £125.00 BT install charge.
Thats £215.00 cost to SKY. BUT ??
If we then take the costs of adding sky equip to your local exchange and the cost to activate your BBI MAX then I guess SKY may start to make money from your account sometime in the distant future.
So I guess you had the deal of the century ????
Need I say more ??????????????????/

Well if you could explain your point that would be a start.

It looks like a positive post about Sky - but this is a Cable site and such things are usually set upon and torn apart, therefore i assumed there was some hidden that i was missing.

Perhaps it was just exactly what it said on the tin... :p:

Oh look..! yet another "goodbye Virgin hello SKY" scenario. I'm beginning to wonder, just how many times we have to suffer this same whinge over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. :erm:

To quote a slight variation of a famous Paul McCartney song.

:o::o::o: "We'll all yawn together" :o::o::o:

Si thee ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! :sleep::sleep:

sky look at the bigger picture an average install costs them £250 hence minimum contracts, so imo yes you need to say more, what is your point???

Re: Adios Virgin. Roll on SKY!!!!

I just posted this in the wrong forum so posting here.

Colin-bennet this is music to my ears!

I am SKY HD already. My boss did the same (NTL>sky with no BT line) but his wife did the move and was not clear if they paid for BT line install.

This is the "other ISP" forum so no flamming pls. Just browsing this forum has been painfully slow tonight.

"HI,

due to the problems with high pings I am looking at moving.

The problem:

Been with NTL 6+ years for BB and phone. The BT line (do not even know the old number) was cut at outside wall when I moved in as I did extensive restructuring to the front room.

Ofcourse for ADSL (say plusnet pro) I need a Plain Old Telephone line.
I could rewire the lines myself i guess. But still don't have a connected numbered line.

Solution?

will call plusnet net week.

PS Do not fancy BT due to Usage policies and homehub router being terrible (I support VPN users at work, everyone has scrapped their homehubs)."

Thanks
G
