Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Hi all :)
I used newsgroups quiet i while back but lost the link :( Seeing how it was so long ago I now need to know whats the best and cheapest newgroup to subscribe to please? It has to have its own search feature aswell. Thanks :) |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Best and Cheapest don't go well together! You mean the best newsgroup at the cheapest price possible?

Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
have a look here for some comparisons between providers
http://www.newsgroupservers.net/ - of course the 'free' VM newsgroup service is the cheapest, but groups peered with, completion & retention are pants compared to a paid for service. To state my bias I use GigaNews on the 25GB per month tariff ($12.99) & either NewzBin (25p per week) or Merlin's Portal (free) for searches. |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
I've used Easynews for the last four years, currently $9.99 (about £5.00) for 20Gig. They've just started beta testing a European based server farm.
|
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
I've just started with http://www.powerusenet.com/... free trial and then a couple of months cheaper... no problems to report at all... except the VM cap of course...

Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Im with Newsgroups direct its only £10 for unlimited download and you can have 20 connections for faster speed if ya get me lol
|
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
I swear by newshosting.com at the moment as im not having any problems maxing out 20mbit with 8 connections and it's only around £8 a month for unlimited.
|
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
that sounds good i might change over
|
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Why not just use the free newsgroup servers from your ISP?
|
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
I use Astraweb for $15 a month (just over £7) on the unlimited DSL offer, they have 115 day retention (and increasing daily!!), european server and I can have 20 connections. And can usually get max speed on 20mb.
I have had very little problems with them since i went to them. |

Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
[Raises thread from the dead]
I'm thinking of moving from using torrents for my..."Linux distros"...to using newsgroups instead. A friend has recommended EasyNews, which going by their site looks pretty good - & cheap (10 dollars for 20GB, with SSL, IIRC). I've also seen people here at CF recommend GigaNews, although they seem to cost a bit more plus you have to pay extra for SSL. Any particular pros/cons about either? Anyone got any reasons to use one & avoid the other? :) |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Been with Giganews since 2005 and a very satisfied customer. Their retention is first-class and server downtime is virtually nil.
With 9 threads open I can max out my 20Mb cable. I use GrabIt with the shemes.com paid search facility, which works rather well. |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
astraweb has an 11 dollars a month unlimited ssl with 20 connections. I just left giganews for them. 160 day retention and ive had no problems
http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html easynews is very easy as its web based http search list and downloads. Create a zip and download using reget or similar only problem is $10 for 20 gig compared to $11 nntp unlimited there is not much competition |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Cheers guys :)
So, if I went with one that used nntp, instead of an easy web interface, I'd need a news client (obviously), & some sort of thing to search? |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
merlins portal and I can invite you to another one
I use newbin myself might be worth just starting with grabit or altbinz though :) |

Unlike TAF though I don;t seem to suffer from the VM cap ;) As for searches just use www.binsearch.info or other similar sites |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
i am with hitnews.eu, 100 days retention, free ssl, 1st 3 days free, €18.50 for 3 months unlimited. They also have a nighttime price of €4.75 a month but you can only download between 00.01 and 11.59.
altbinz is a free and simple reader that also auto repairs.:D |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Cheers :)
I think I'm gonna give Zing's suggestion of Astra a try :) Have just downloaded Grabit, & will have a look at Merlin's Portal. Any recommendations on other clients or search sites? |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
For a client I use NEWSBIN, used it now for 5+ years
|

Also, the filtering and killfile features are first-class, which you really do need with usenet. It's still the wild west out there. http://abmefaq.net/XNews_Primer.html |
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
I use Newzbin for the search, News Rover to download and extract, (+search) and NewsDemon for newsgroup access. (News Rover is free with NewsDemon).
|
Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
yeah am with newsdemon myself as well... and using Newzbin and grabit to download :) works a treat...double bonus 1 month I didnt have enough dosh in my bank account for the paypal transfer and since then I've been using newsdemon for free (6 months now) and its the all unlimited version for which I was paying £12 p/m (didnt have ssl)

Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Thank's to Zing, I have just switched from Giganews (user since 2004) to Astraweb (I used use Pay per download before) to save quite a bit of cash really.
I use SABnzbd+ (Python Service) as my download manager in association with Newzbin and the nzbd Firefox addon. One click download heaven ;) |
newzbin invite
Hi everyone, i am a new user to this forum, and I am looking for someone that uses newzbin to send me an invite. The account i was using was a friends account and he changed the password leaving me stranded!!! Please help me, if you have an extra invite please send it to [Mod Edit] Thanks!!!!
[Mod Edit (Rob M): Email address removed so you don't get bombarded with spam. The forum has a good Personal Messaging system that people can use to contact you :)] |

Re: Best cheapest newsgroup to purchase
Another thanks to David for the Astranews link which I subbed to the $11 special last night. After the us exchange rate has gone south I'm now saving a couple of quid a month, and even better my header downloads are now compressed so saving me a lot of time in the mornings...
