Subject: Screen resolutions

Hi,

Could you tell me what has been the standard screen resolution now and for the past few years.

I would like to know this as I am doing a new website and want to know what to fix the width at.

In the past I have set the width to 800x600 but I am thinking if I should go to 1024x768.

Acathla 08-11-2007 15:42

Re: Subject: Screen resolutions

don't fix the width....

LSainsbury 08-11-2007 15:45

Re: Subject: Screen resolutions

1024 x 768 is kinda standard but as Acathla said - don't fix the width - use a percentage of the screen for borders or whatever you are doing...

Re: Subject: Screen resolutions

My desktop has been 1280x1024 for years now and most normal lcd's are this resolution, however my laptop is 1440x900 and is a pain on most websites that are long but not wide. most people are moving to widescreens these days!

Re: Subject: Screen resolutions

I now have a 1680:1050 widescreen lcd and a hell of a lot of systems ship with a 16:10 panel nowadays. I had a 19inch crt for a few years before this and my res on the was always higher than you gave. I though default flat panel if 17 or 19 inches was 1280:1024

Re: Subject: Screen resolutions

Hi,

I never thought about setting percentage as the width but it does make sence, as it would fit all screens then.

I am setting up a border, that why I want it set as I don't want it to be full screen but around 80-90% of screen

on my old 17! crt i ran 1280x1024 and now on my 19"ws i run 1440x900

Re: Subject: Screen resolutions

My LCD is 1680x1050 too. I think you should set up the border as a percentage too. :)

Re: Subject: Screen resolutions

1440 x 900 is becoming quite common now as more people switch to wide screen. It's like the WS equivelent of 1024 x 768.

AbyssUnderground 08-11-2007 18:12

Re: Subject: Screen resolutions

I always build my sites for 1024x768 or with percentages. Never anything lower.

I find locked width's very irritating.

1440x900 is about 1.2MP and 1280x1024 is 1.3MP whereas 1024x768 is only 0.7MP so I would say that 1280x1024 is closer, although you lose the height, I personally prefer the extra width.

I'd say the standard now is 1024 x 768.
Remember how long it took to get people away from 800x600. It takes a good while.

The only people I know still on 1024x768 are working with 5 year old PCs?

Yes, but I'm thinking about the full audience..... There are more people with old systems than there are with new ones.

I always forget to close apps so i have them spread over the desktops, but i forget they are open, and im getting rather lazy/messy with icons atm :p:

Never been able to get linux to do native reso on the dell monitor though.

1280x1024 since about 3years ago for me. Except very recently, i've been using a small LCD tv that only handles 1024x768 as my PC is still sat in England atm...

No reason why this shouldn't be achievable, it might mean some manual tweaking of the xorg.conf file however

Always been like that.

Buts lets not forget the OP was asking in the context of web page design. and so screen resolution is not really relavent, since whos to say their browser is in full screen mode anyway
Which is why % is better

The "Scale" plugin being one of the better ones of course;)

Have you tried
Code:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Just use TAB/Enter to accept all the defaults, until you come to the RES part where you should be able to choose the one you want??
Once you`ve done then CTRL-ALT-Backspace to restart X

True, but 6 desktops on a rotatable cube is cool :D (Especially if you press the Left and Right Mouse Buttons together and you can move it about manually)

Or middle mouse button;)
Top left mouse gesture for Expo, top right for scale are the handiest of them all.Especially the latter:)

Or those who prefer to sit a bit further back from their screen. :) My system may not be bleeding-edge, but it's hardly 5 years old either: AMD X2 6000+, 4GB RAM, ATI X800 GTO, etc.

Yes, well, not all of us sit with our noses pressed up against the screen. :p: I had to put up with 1280x1024 when playing around with *buntu live CDs, & it's too damned small for regular use for me. Hopefully I shouldn't have any probs getting 1024x768 once I do a proper install.

You must have amazing eyesight then [or really strong glasses :p:]. I can read text smaller than [for example] the size I have Firefox set to use [all sizes under fonts set to 20], but If I did, I'd end up with sore eyes &/or a headache fairly quickly. I don't need a higher resolution for anything, so don't see any point in using 1.

Was the first thing i tried.

No matter what i do it locks me in a small box in the top corner which only ctrl+alt+backspace solves.

followed by sudo dpkg-reoncfigure server-xorg @ prompt.

Otherwise i get stuck with a box in the left corner permanently.

I run 1280x1024 on my 19" 4:3 screen & 1280x720 on my 26" but I rarely use the 26" for anything other than HD content.

I used to have a compaq V50 15" and ran that at 1024x768 without sitting on top of the screen I have good eyesight.
