Depressing Router Problem
 

A few weeks ago I decided to buy a new router as my old belkin router decided to pack it in after 3 years. Since the previous router lasted so long I believed it would be a good idea to buy a newer belkin router model, oh how I was so wrong :(

The router I purchased is the Wireless G+ plus MIMO router which cost £100. After a few days, the router decides to drop the connection so I went to my browser, done the usual 192.168.2.1 but that wouldnt even load up so I couldnt restart or check my router settings. The only way I could get the router to work again was to turn my pc off completely and switch it off at the plug. This seemed to do the trick but its very annoying.

I dont understand why it keeps disconecting me every few hours and Im forced always to turn off the Router at the plug. Currently, there are 2 computers using wireless from the router and my own which uses wired. There is also a PS2 and Xbox 360 but they are not all used alot at the same time.

I have a medium/high spec computer (don't know if thats relevant) and I'm unsure about how to solve this problem. Sorry for the long message but I had to let all this frustration out. :) Any help would be much grateful.

Is it the PC that drops the connection to the router, or the router that drops the connection to the PC?

You'll know if it's the PC as your PS2 / Xbox should still be able to browse.

It is definately the router that drops the connection to the pc, Im not able to browse with the xbox/ps2 when the drop occurs

Are you able to return the router from whence it came and exchange it for a different model? This arbitrary connection dropping problem seems to be endemic across various models of Belkin router so I would be inclined to avoid them at all costs.

Unfortunately, I cannot take it back for another router. I will have to stick it out and wait until it completely packs in then I will be forced to buy yet again another router. At least this time, I know not to buy a belkin again. ;)

I had a similar problem with a Wireless Access Point - it kept "dropping" without warning, then would return a few minutes later. After much detective work it turned out the power supply was overheating, switched itself off to cool down, then came back on, etc.

why can't you take it back belkin have a lifetime guarantee??:confused:
i had simular problems with one at my friends house and i took it back to pc world (it didn't even come from there:p:) and they changed it for me, got a d-link instead:D

Because then I will have no internet connection which I need for work and college, and I dont have the receipt to take it back to the shop. I could send it to Belkin to get a new one but again, Ill be outta Internet action for weeks. Either way im screwed :)

yeah thats what i'm saying though, i took one back to pc world (that had not been bought there) so i didn't have a receipt for it;) but they didn't ask just said could they swap it for another,at which point i asked if it was ok to choose a differant make and that was ok. whole thing took about 1 hour and my mate was back up and running.
but if you don't want too then don't, i was only trying to help
if an hour or so is too long to be without the internet then i think you must be :disturbd: :)

A few things to check before you throw it out the window change the channel to 5 which is mid range. If you have a DEC phone turn it off for a wile to check it’s not your phone causing interference. One other thing to try is let windows control the wireless connection. Lastly don’t buy a new unit phone the help line and get it RMAed Belkin normally ship a replacement and then get you to send the old unit back.

I have the same unit and have no problem and I’m using a 6Mt cable from the modem to the router which I understand from Belkin this could cause the router to loose the connection.

saabmania2, what your saying about your local PC World store will not happen at mine as they are much stricter when returning or exchanging goods, a short period of time ago, I had to return and exchange a PC game as it wouldnt run on my pc but I didnt have the receipt, they wouldnt allow me to exchange or return it so I was left with a game i couldnt/still cant play and so I highly doubt they will let me return a 100 quid router.

Anyway back on topic, as different people are saying about wireless and stuff, The computer I use is not on wireless, I'm using a wired connection like the xbox and ps2 but there are other computers that are wireless. I discovered today that when one of the wireless computers tried to connect it did and was fine for about 2 minutes then the Internet went completely off, couldnt restart router but the Internet light was still flashing. It seems that sometimes (only sometimes) once a computer or xbox trys to connect to the router it freezes up and drops the whole connection for everyone and then im forced to turn off the main computer.

What could be done to solve this problem except buying a new router? :)

Why not check/update the Routers firmware level from Belkins site?

Assuming you are on cable....I suggest you buy this wireless Buffalo router from Ebuyer for around £26 + p&p.

Then send the Belkin back for swap out, and keep it as a spare for resilience (or a bookend)

Sorry...should have checked out that it was an ADSL router. Again would suggest a Buffalo router, which I have installed for a friend. Stable, reliable and very neat. The routers pretty good too! Price upped to £37 pounds + though......

I appreciate everyones help and all of the advice given has been very useful. Ill get onto Belkin and hopefully i can get this issue sorted :)

you could report it as faulty and request a replacement/repair. That leaves you without a router though :(

I suppose the only other thing you can do is buy a replacement and flog that one on ebay when it comes back "repaired" assuming Belkin admit there's a problem with it.
