Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
Yo, Mac Users! OSX (10.5) is ready for order and will be released on the 26th October. http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/leopard/
All ready ordered my copy :D Hopefully no serious problems :erm: |
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
Is there an upgrade programme for recent purchasers of 10.4? My dad has a new iMac, less than a month old.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
As per Tiger, there isn't anything revolutionary on there... I'll wait a few months and get a cheap OEM copy on ebay like I did last time.

However, when I bought my powerbook (in the US) it actually came with Jaguar pre-installed and they gave me a free copy of Panther. I might have actually bought it after Panther was released, I can't remember. |

On your point about it not being revolutionary - it's not supposed to be. Apple OS upgrades are evolutionary, not revolutionary. Microsoft favours the revolution approach ... and Vista is a cack-handed mess. It has some nice touches I would like to have, such as the extension of the album art browser used in iTunes to the Finder, and the ability to roll back to older versions of files (how often I've done a 'save' and then wished I hadn't ... ). As you say though, I will wait a while and then hit eBay. |

There is not anything major in this release (I would argue spotlight was a big one in the last release though). There is a lot of developer stuff that makes this a good release for a Intel Computer since it contains multi-core apps and 64-bit apps. ---------- Post added at 14:23 ---------- Previous post was at 14:22 ---------- Quote:

Time Machine, which looks like a weird hybrid of Microsoft's System Restore and a disk imaging program is no good to me as it seems you need a separate external drive. The preview thing seems to be slower than opening the file in the first place as you have to click it then go upto the top to click the eye icon. I don't use ichat or mail. The spaces looks OK, but as I don't do hardcore work (that's for my desktop) then I probably won't use that much. Plus the fact, contrary to public opinion Tiger did slow my powerbook down, and my little 1ghz PPC G4 is struggling enough already, and is right on the cusp of compatibility. Soeaking of which... Still for compiz-fusion you can always reformat and stick a copy of Ubuntu on there :) I think I might do eventually actually. as it seems Tiger is as far as I can go. |
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
I had a quick play with Leopord a while back (I know a couple of people who were on the beta), and while I missed a lot, I didn't find anything that made me desperate enough to part with £60 for it (yes, working for a Uni, I qualify for student discount).
Having said that, I have found Apple do have a habit of coming up with handy little functions that you don't initially think would be useful, then when you get used to them and they go, you really miss them. |

I like the grammer check, guest accounts, sandboxed apps, spotlight will now highlight the top add so its quicker to open. dotMac syncs of system preferences and dock/wallpapers. I like the stacks and other desktop improvements too. All small features but nice ones. |

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
im always curious to see what apple are upto, but are they taking the pee when on the site it says "just" 85 quid!
man, the way apple treats its loyal fans is just a joke some times |
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
I got it for £60 :) Still, for a OS upgrade it's not that overpriced.
|
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
i paid about that for a full OEM version of vista.
and think about it, your paying for upgrades to things like your web browser, email, chat software etc. normally most folk, like firefox just give these away for free, but apple puts it all in a package and charges you for it. |

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
i have no issue with the OS itself, just the cost to upgrade things :)
even MS gives away IE7 to XP users and such. i think you would be hard pushed to argue that apple dont overprice their mini upgrades just to push cash out of its loyal followers. |
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
The upgrades are quite decent sized, I mean this one is pretty good. 2 1/2 years or so since Tiger. MS aimed and are now aiming to do the same thing. Having a collection of smaller releases more often. It also helps avoid shaking up the landscape to much so you dont have the migration problems vista had. Apple also are quite keen to keep OSX advanced.
But if you look at 10.5, I think you would be hard pushed to suggest those should all be free upgrades. Also Apple gave Safari 3.0 to 10.4 users. MS are not giving all the features away to XP users neither are Apple giving all away their features away. |
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
Actually, the thing I most want to test is the revised security system which apparently includes Application Sandboxing. Well, I don't *want* to test it, but I'll need to, as we'll probably be using Leopard in the Lab next year.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
My retail version arrived today :>
My upgrade version still says awaiting shipping :< |
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
I am on 10.5 now. It's pretty awesome! Only downsides are the lack of a arrow in the dock so you know which apps are open. Need to tab to see that now.....
Best things are the new unified appearance, spaces is cool, finder and quick view are very very cool |
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
Apparently, we do have a Leopard Server 10.5 disc somehwere I should be getting at some point. Don't know when I'll get access to either that or the leopard upgrade though. AFAIK, I am supposed to be getting both.

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
I'm hoping to get mine on discount for education(ahem) but I'm not re-newing my .mac (waste of money)

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
Quick View also works for Music and some video files. It really does display many different files types and does it VERY quickly. Instantly. I can preview word documents and so forth at a snap, same with cover flow which is also very quick.

I think it's on the fly, there is a slight delay when you do it via cover flow so I presume thats whats happening.
Cannot be sure though. |
Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
Presumably catalogues them after your first viewing though ...

Re: Mac OS 10.5 to be released 26th October
mine is here and I am just installing now ... probably not the best thing to do after 4 bottles of peroni but hey ho!
EDIT Process:
Fairly boring install process - No "I am doing this bit" just a progress bar with no %age shown! Time remaining about a xx minutes that's it - doesn't even say which Mac OS X it's installing! First impressions - It's OK (Nah its cool) Safari 3 is on and not beta And that boys and girls is my leapord unleashed! |
