A problem with ADSL
A quick question over a problem that my sister has with her ADSL connection...I have not seen it for myself, but from what I have been told, the problem is this...
She has Sky, a basic adsl modem and a phone connected upstairs. What is happening is that anyone who tries to ring in, goes straight through to the voicemail. She has tried each one separately and the problem seems to occur when only the modem is connected. The connection works, but it is acting like dial-up in that you cannot use the phone at the same time. She has rung BT and they said that the line is fine. I am thinking that it is either the modem or the filter. Has anyone else experienced this? |
Re: A problem with ADSL
not sure of your set up, but does she have a filter in place?
when using the telephone and ADSL broadband, you normally have a filter plugged into the telephone socket. |
Re: A problem with ADSL
Sorry, I forgot to mention that, yes it has a filter. The setup has been working fine for 2 years now. It just started on Wednesday.

Re: A problem with ADSL
have you contacted BT to test your line?

Yes, she has already done that and they said it is fine.

If she's on Tiscali's LLU service, I'm not sure why BT would have told her the condition of the line, as Tiscali are responsible for it and not BT. Has she replaced the filter, just to rule it out as a possible cause? |

Filters do go faulty, I had one fall to bits inside (mind you it did sit in the bottom of a bag being carted here there and everywhere for ages so not exactly the normal usage for them..) |

Been a while since i've had to do that since the modems we use at work have a different driver to be used with the ADSL testing software. and its been a while since i've encountered a usb modem since most people I know are using some form or router or another. |

It was only after trial and error, that we figured out that it was the modem. I will try a new filter, to see if it is that first, as that is the cheapest to buy. Thanks everybody, for your help :) |
Re: A problem with ADSL
If it does turn out to be a duff modem you can buy usb modems for less than £10 or routers for ~ £20 - 30
Or could try asking your ISP to send a new one. |

Brilliant router, and I was rather plesently surprised to find its not lacking on features either love the upstream QOS on it so easy to use :) http://fbdragon.co.uk/external/ss/qos.jpg Not the nicest looking thing to look at but i've seen far worse. Have a Homehub and a dlink g624T and the voyager beats them both in terms of stability and features. Prooves that BT branded kit can be decent pity they didn't model the homehub on the later voyagers really :( |
