Advice needed about Heaters
I've a corner spare bedroom with the corner facing northeast. We have no central heating and during the winter it is very cold at night. We used to have a fan heater but since it broke down we haven't bothered. However I suspect that this winter's going to be a nasty one so I need a new heater for when my daughter comes home for Christmas.
I've looked in Argos but I'm confused by all the choice.I'm not sure how safe oil fueled radiators are and I just can't believe the choice there is with fan heaters. As I remember it the fan heater we had was expensive and not really very effective. Can anyone recommend what would be safe, efficient and value for money in a quite small bedroom in a house with no central heating. Coggy. :) |
Re: Advice needed about Heaters
These are what i have throughout my apartment coggy and don't appear to be too expensive to run, although very effective if you have good insulation http://www.dealec.co.uk/acatalog/Dea...aters_150.html

Re: Advice needed about Heaters
Nothing really wrong with the oil filled radiators. No more unsafe than fan heaters. Most should be thermostatically controlled.
Any electrical heater shouldn't be covered. That's when there are real risks of them overheating. Fan heaters tend not to be that effective, lkie any air circulation based system as all they do is heat the air. You really need something that is running for longer periods, albeit at lower temperature so they can warm the structure. |
Re: Advice needed about Heaters
When I lived up North we lived in a stone cottage on the top of the moors, we had a coal fire for daily use and a fan heater for quick heat when we got in from work with an oil filled rad to provide background heating at night. That may be a little expensive these days though.

The alternatives are radiator type, or convector type - in my opinion a cold corner will benefit from a radiator, but the whole room will prefer a convector, such as the panels super has linked to.... |
Re: Advice needed about Heaters
Oil filled are great. My parents have one - they have no heating at all, other than a gas fire in the living room. I use it when I stay at Christmas - just put it on low before bed, takes the chill off the room.

Re: Advice needed about Heaters
We use an thermostatically controlled oil filled radiator in our conservatory and its great. Theyre much better than a fan heater and in my opinion much safer as there are no elements open to the air.
---------- Post added at 13:52 ---------- Previous post was at 13:44 ---------- These are a bargain price, should be £80 down to £34 http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/product...oducts_id=5055 |

We have a cheap halogen thing, does the job lovely

Your PC plus Virgin TV box will provide plenty of warmth....

A couple of Amiga A500 power supplies used to do the trick back in the day, nice n toasty :D
When I lived in Nottingham I didnt have central heating (had gas in front room tho) so I installed 400w slimline panel heaters in all the rooms, fitted them with timers and they certainly worked. Made by a company called Laser or Lazer and sold by B&Q retailed for around £35 each. http://tinyurl.com/yr8m7g good prices from the link ^ |

Re: Advice needed about Heaters
Coggy I think you're a little confused between oil-fuelled and oil-filled. You don't want an old paraffin heater, that's for sure, but I reckon you'd have a hard time finding one of those these days anyway.
In Argos you will get a nice oil-filled radiator. This is a sealed unit with an electric heating element inside. We have one in our spare room which doesn't have a central heating radiator (yet) and it's great, thermostatically controlled and very reliable. |

Should I need some warmth during night or when I am getting up I can turn it on via the switch right next to my bed. |
Re: Advice needed about Heaters
Another vote for the oil filled rads here, I used 3 to great effect when the heating packed in 4 weeks after buying this house, cheap to run and the ones I had had a timer on them..
I still have one I use for the shower room.. |
Re: Advice needed about Heaters
If you wan instant noticeable heat then you need a fan heater, otherwise you need oil filled as suggested above.

Re: Advice needed about Heaters
you can have my xbox360 over the winter, it tends to heat the room up considerably!
But to iterate what others are saying, oil filled is the best alternative to central heating. I use a fan heater for my feet when I am in the computer room to stop them getting nippy but not a good solution for for you want. |
Re: Advice needed about Heaters
For a thorough analysis of why we feel hot or cold, get hold of a copy of Thermal Comfort by P.O.Fanger (McGraw Hill, 1972). Fanger's model is used extensively in the HVAC industry yet anyone with a basic grasp of physics will find this book easy to read. It explains the difference between conducted heat and radiant heat and why a simple thermostat doesn't always make us comfortable. Recommended - if you're serious about your heating!

Must say, my 8800GTX does have a warming effect on the room :D
Bit nippy the last few nights - winter is definitely on its way. I've been adjusting the timings on the central heater - bit of heat on a morning. I'll be asleep but it takes the chill off. |

Re: Advice needed about Heaters
OK.I took the majority advice and went for an oil filled radiator.I got the Matsui £30 option from Currys and going by the test run it should do the job nicely..it has already ease off the damp feeling of the room. :)
Reps and thanks all round..and I'm sorry to have forgotten to include any of the posts in the MHP nominations for October.:( |
