Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

I tried to Search but it said "Nokia N95" the N95 part was under 4 Letters :erm:

I am having my sisters N95 (Vodaphone) contract (she will keep SIM). I looked online & see that you have to PAY to Unlock it with Vodaphone. Anyone done this? Some said 3+ weeks for code... :dozey:

Can I Unbrand it & Unlock it via a Code? or only in a Mobile Shop

PS. Any tips or good softwear to add to N95 or anyone who has one please drop by & say Hi. I would love to see what extra's you've added to N95 :D

Mobiola Warex is a good one to use your N95 as a web cam. Need bluetooth though.

N95 is a cracking phone and there are plenty of good apps for it.

Reply off Vodafone website.

Please note that it will take up to 6 weeks to receive your NUC. If your phone is less then 12 months old you will be charged £ 19.99. You will receive your NUC by post.
Any other way to do it faster?

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

There are a few ways you can do this...

1) Pay Vodafone the £20
2) Take it down a local market. A mobile phone stallholder can probably unlock it for £5/£10
3) Look online for Nokia Unlock Code Calculators, or Nokia Cable Unlockers. Depending where you look, they should be free.

It should be noted, however...

Unlocking this N95 will result in the Warranty becoming void. Also, if Vodafone wish for you to send the phone back to them for whatever reason (which they are allowed to do), they may not accept it back, and charge you, as it isn't as they sent it in the first place. (If the phone is over 12 months old, I believe this part doesn't apply to you anyway).

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

I'm eligible for an upgrade next Friday (O2), & am seriously considering getting an N95.

I've got more & more fed up with my O2 XDA Mini S (HTC Wizard), so don't want the next one up from that (XDA Trion / Vario 2 etc).

So I'm thinking... back to Nokia & Symbian.

I've seen 4GB micro SDHC cards at amazon for around £25, which seems good.

Anyone with an N95 have any tips on:

- Anything else worth getting for it? Good cases, screen protectors, etc?

- Software for it?

- the N95 itself.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

I've had my N95 for 3 months and I'm still impressed with it. I don't think a case is needed (never have used them really) but when you get yours, make sure the software is V.11 or above (check by entering *#0000#), if it's not you can use the Nokia software suite to update.

If you want to try the satnav, don't bother with the built-in software, use www.nav4all.com instead.

And you need to have the phone open for the GPS to work.

One final thing - no market stall or shop on earth can unlock it - only the networks can. If someone tells you otherwise, they're either lying or mistaken.

Have you had any problems with the slide? I've read that it can get quite loose.

It will get a little loose, moreso on the right side but it's only slight and it won't affect performance or your use of it.

I have an unbranded one (brought it myself) and currently use it on three. (brought it because they were so slow in releasing it) however i dont have the three certficates on it and so most of the stuff in there online store doesnt work :(

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

If you use NSS you can change the product code to a euro one and install the non branded v12 software.

As for unlocking, pay the £20 or get your soldering iron out.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Ordered one from T-Mobile in the end, on Friday.

Phoned O2, to see if they'd give me anything extra to upgrade & stay with them (seeing as the website says you get a "bonus for loyalty").

They offered me a £10 unlimited data bolt on (which isn't on the O2 website), which is more than T-Mobile charge for unlimited Web & Walk.

The T-Mobile tariff works out better for me too, than the O2 one.

So..I thought I'd finally say goodbye to O2 after various high street & online contracts over the last 5 years or so, & switch to T-Mobile.

Damn thing's out of stock though... hopefully they'll get some in on Monday/Tuesday & I'll get my nice new N95 on Tuesday/Wednesday.

Already ordered a Sandisk 4GB microSDHC card from Amazon.

Also, apparently the NXT Mobile Application works on the N95 (even though it's not listed), so I can use my N95 to control my Lego Mindstorms NXT :)

You won't be disappointed young sir :D

Or maybe you will when the 8gb version comes out in december

Tezcatlipoca 22-09-2007 23:02

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

LOL, yeah, maybe.

Still, the 8GB will probably cost a fair bit more for a while.

Plus although it has 8GB it doesn't have a card slot. I think I'd rather use cards, & have a bit more expandability.

The increased RAM & battery on the 8GB do sound pretty good though (especially the battery, with what I've read of the N95's battery life!).

flext on t-mobile is a great service, i dont use many texts normally but then on 1 day i may use loads but on flext its all under 1 price plan, not wasting anything.

i do find when i ring out, it takes 20-30 sec to connect to the number i'm ringing at times. full signal and battery, but feels like no service, then it rings after 20 seconds. anyone else notice this?

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

I have had my N95 since it's release day on T-Mobile. Been a great phone, not really had a the battery life problems many people have reported. I did crack the screen however as it is not protected by hard plastic, like on some Sony phones. Bought a new screen online and fitted it myself, which was pretty easy (it uses torx T5 screws not T6 like everywhere online says.

I've installed quite a few apps. Use Tomtom 6 mobile instead of Nokia maps as it's so much better (although it doesn't work with the built in GPS!). Also using the Sandisk 4GB card and that works fine.
Installed the opera browser but it was only a trial. Stick v12 firmware on it and got rid of the web 'n' walk stuff. Only crashed it once on this firmware. Also put the messenger live app on it and can now check my Hotmail account. I also had a DivX player for it but it got corrupted when I upgraded the firmware and I can't remember where I found it.
When I'm at home the phone automatically logs on to my Sipgate account so I make calls over VOIP via my broadband connection. This is great as the signal is pretty poor for most networks at my house.
I also have a Qnap NAS that has a upnp media server on it so I can send the photos on the phone straight to it via wifi.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

It finally came yesterday :)

Seems good so far.

It's got the version 11 firmware on it. I did check the Nokia Software Updater, but it seems T-Mobile haven't yet approved their branded version of the v12 firmware, as it said my N95 was up to date.

Have read stuff about unbranding (with nemesis?), changing the product code to some sort of generic one, & then upgrading to the generic v12 firmware.

Bit wary of that though, if it could be classed as voiding the warranty with T-Mobile, or cause any other issues if I ever needed to return the phone.

Russ 27-09-2007 19:37

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

It arrived? Aw Matt you must be so proud, it's beautiful :)

</bloke moment>

It's not worth flashing to get V12 mate as it would indeed invalidate the warranty and you risk bricking it. V11 works just fine as long as you're not planning on using the Maps application.

Tezcatlipoca 27-09-2007 20:42

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

It is a lovely phone, isn't it :D

Yeah, I think I will stick with the official T-Mobile v11.

Don't wanna risk screwing the phone up, or losing the warranty.

Not used a Nokia in years (old 5510 I think it was!), but still very easy to use & get to grips with.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Installed the "Sky Anytime on Mobile" application earlier. Quite good. News headlines etc., plus a mobile version of the Sky EPG... with Remote Record. Handy.

Also gave the Lego NXT Mobile Application a try... used the N95 as a Bluetooth remote control for my NXT robot... sent it scuttling around the room. Cool.

I assume this is through the Nokia site?

Or is there some other way of getting it apart from the above?

I am hoping for a fix that will stop it getting stuck on WLAN even when you disconnect (this is usually because the net has stopped working). I'm on O2 btw... :)

Yeah, via the Nokia Software Updater.

If O2 hasn't yet approved the O2 branded v12 firmware for release, then the only way to do it is to unbrand your N95 & then update it with the generic v12 firmware. Can be risky apparently, & also can void the Nokia warranty, & operator insurance, etc.

http://www.n95users.com/forum/genera...html#post35045

I had some funny WLAN issues... fixed it by going to Tools > Settings > Connection > Wireless LAN > Options > Advanced Settings, & then set Automatic Configutation to "Disabled", so that I could then set Power Saving to "Disabled".

Tried the GPS?

With Assisted GPS, I can now even get a quick lock indoors, rather than standing outside for five minutes or something.

Needs the Access Point defined in Tools > Settings > General > Positioning > Positioning Server, plus Assisted GPS needs to be ticked in Tools > Settings > General > Positioning > Positioning Methods.

Not noticed anything else particularly different yet, apart from the "3.5G" display.

Russ 10-10-2007 08:10

Can't really see much reason to change. Sure the black looks nicer but the new version doesn't have a card slot so you're stuck with 8gb like it or not.

Yeah.

I'd rather have the card slot, than be stuck with only 8GB.

6GB microSDHC cards are already out, 8GB later this year, & even bigger next year.

The bigger battery would be good, but I don't really have a problem with the battery life on my normal N95.

More RAM... again, always good. But, I don't really have a problem with that either. Just need to make sure things are really closed.

Same here, i'm on my 4th Vario II since I signed up to t-mobile over a year ago, and this new one crashes every day! Think i'll be switching to the n95 8gb, I have 2gb micro with the vario II but only use about a gig of that, so 8gb will be more than enough for now. Can't wait for my contract to end.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Well, I have to admit, I am thoroughly confused. IIRC, I got my current phone around sept last year. I wasn't clear on whether it was a twelve or 18 month contract, so I looked up my contract details. The site said contract expired, so I tried to upgrade. Got told to come back in the final month of my contract.

So, I phoned the automated line, and got told I could upgrade from 5th December, with isn't 11, 12, 17 or 18 months from last september.

Oh poo!

Upgraded the firmware of my router (Linksys
WRT54GS v5.1) to the latest firmware version v1.50.9

Now for some reason, my N95 will no longer connect to the internet through it. It connects to the network no problems, but whenever I access Web it returns a error saying no web gateway.

Any ideas?

Fixed.

Spoke to a very helpful woman on the Linksys Technical Support line which was free. An Indian call centre, but you would never have noticed.

Directed me to the USA site where the was more up to date firmware. That fettled the problem straight away!

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Good points:

Awesome camera, video recording is almost dvd-like in quality, audio quality is really good, in fact as good as anything SE have produced, loads and loads of applications available for it, nice big clear screen, GPS locks on in seconds with latest firmware

Bad points:

Can feel a little plasticy, OS can slow if too many programmes are open, satnav isn't as good as a TomTom etc (but still pretty handy), slight delay of about 5 seconds between taking pictures (this can be eliminated by deselecting the option to view a pic after it's been taken, in very latest firmware it's completely reduced), OS can be a little daunting if you've never used Symbian before.

Overall, the best phone I've ever had and it'll take something pretty special to get me to change from it.

I've just found out how to get v20 - simply debrand the phone (which is dead easy and legal although it invalidates any warranty) and run the software update. I'm currently installing it right now.

If you are concerned about power consumption (after all, the more power your phone consumes, the shorter the battery life), Nokia have a free app for all their S60 phones (including N95) to monitor the power consumption.

Version 20 of the n95 is much improved, though it convert the normal n95 into the 8gb version software wise (all the new things the 8gb brought the old one now has - the flash storage)

With regards to the camera being 'good' for a camera phone it might be quite good but personally i think its pathetic and prefer the 3mp one that was on the n80.

The variable optics / autofocus thing to me is entirely pointless since it has no optical zoom and just adds to the time to take a pic on top of the app loading.
And when it does take a pic the quality is laughable, the images are way overcompressed typically i get 400-600kb images at 5mp (my ixus takes 4-6mb for 10mp)
and then there is the optics 'features' just take a look at this image i took the other week. Notice what its done to the glass on the right

That's probably true. I don't like digital zoom, so I just take with optical or no zoom at all.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Nokia need to release an update that stops the camera compressing photos as the quality is shocking a lot of the time. I mean 550KB for a 5 megapixel image is terrible.

I installed v20 last week and can see no real difference apart from applications in different places to where they used to be. The only major change I can find is the camera doesn't pause for about 5 seconds after you take a picture.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

The addition of demand paging of v20 is apparently a great improvement. Still obviously has less physical RAM than the N95 8GB & the US N95, but at least manages it better.

I'm just gonna wait for T-Mobile to get v20. Don't want to lose my warranty.

Definitely agree with DarthYoda & keithwalton about the photo compression. 400KB or so for a 5MP image is stupid. There should be an option to alter the compression (like digicams have). Space isn't an issue, & why bother having a 5MP camera with a Zeiss lens if the photos are so squished.

Just let us turn off the compression if we want. Whats the point in a great lens and 5MP if we aren't really getting the use of it. My old 3.2MP K800 took better quality photos!

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

i have v20 on mine now and its much improved, the phone itself is more responsive much quicker to boot up and the camera is quite abit quicker but still has the stupid auto focus lag, and they're still very compressed. Though it does go 'processing image' after you take one which should mean settings will be changeable eventually. Something else i did notice is the 'shrink' option is no longer avaliable, however when sending as mms it auto compresses it when you attach the image.
That pic i linked last time was taken with no zoom at all. I'm guessing its the variable f-stop which caused the warping of the glass because it was at the edge of the frame and it had focused on something close in the middle.

when going to media slider mode it just now rotates instead of going to the other silly app. The gps app is also much better and quicker. Battery life is improved to i can now manage 4 days with heavy text usage, it used to be 3 days at best.
