I think my PC setup is a bit unbalanced - how about this?

OK, so this might just be an excuse for me to spend a bit of £, but I love shopping :)

At the moment I've got an AMD x2 4200+, 1 Gb memory, and a 7300 LE with 512Mb

I'm getting the feeling this is a bit unbalanced - fast processor but not very much memory and a slow graphics card. It took about 30 minutes to demux a 7 Gb mpeg today.

So I reckon to spending me some money ;)

I'm thinking of 2 sets of this to get me to 4 Gb

Not too sure about graphics card though - I don't really play games.

Ones that caught my eye are:

256M Gigabyte NX86T256H 8600GT
256MB Gainward 8600GT Silent
512MB Gigabyte 8600GT Silent

What do you techies reckon to those?

:)

bloody hell zing, that ram is a steal, same stuff as i've got and very decent. also have that card and no qualms in recommending it either, was a bit hesitant at first but bio(crap-me-pants)shock runs settings near enough maxed and moh-airborne looks sweet :D, and the free bfg t-shirt and stickers clinched the deal.

Re: I think my PC setup is a bit unbalanced - how about this?

Thanks Zing - that's definitely £100 too much - well, maybe £75 too much. :)

It's a pity OC dont do the Gigabyte card too - it's a pain having to put in lots of little orders

Re: I think my PC setup is a bit unbalanced - how about this?

This Card is cheaper, and although not DX10'd up, it'll wee all over your 7300

defo get that ram though, nice price!!

zing_deleted 30-08-2007 21:44

Re: I think my PC setup is a bit unbalanced - how about this?

but the geil ram is better imo to the corsair ive had a fair number of faield corsair sticks in recent history so do not touch it anymore. Do scan not have the geil?

Honey, I don't do budgets :)

8600gt is a waste of money.

Get the 8800gts you wont regret it... 8600gt can barely handle DX10 titles now so when the next set come out your gonna be fetching for a new card if you wanna enjoy the full prettyness and thats gonna cost more.

Dont skimp now and it'll pay off later..

Graphics cards don't speed up video conversion... But you could do with another graphics card in case you want to get into games.

that being true the best advice would be buy a 1950 pro now buy a dx10 card after the revision ;)

We've got different ideas of what constitutes pretty then ;) Though it does look less computery than Zingles thing.

But I don't really play games and I don't fancy having to uninstall all the Nvidia stuff to put an ATI card in.

Thanks for the suggestion tho :)

dude to do the job properly you will have to uninstall the nvidia drivers anyway.

If you dont play Games then why do you want a new graphics card... It wont bring anything new to the table for you...

This one or this one might be worth a look?

but the ATI is better value for money,(and as zing said, you should remove old drivers anyhow...)

I've bought the memory. I'll hold off the graphics card for now, despite all your efforts ;)

which ram?

hjf288 30-08-2007 23:13

Re: I think my PC setup is a bit unbalanced - how about this?

DX10 = DirectX 10 its the latest version of making pretty graphics in laymans terms... Exclusive to Windows Vista only at the moment - only supported by latest graphics cards Nvidia 8xxx series and ATI R2xxx series.
DX 9 = The current widely used version of DirectX...

http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/inde...showtopic=9550

For a quick visual on whats the biggie just look at the screenshots... DX 10 supposedly allows for not only better graphics but more efficient use of GPUs because they are equipped with Stream processors that can adapt to Pixel or Vertex shading on the fly as opposed to Current DX9 hardware which has a set amount of Pixel shaders and a set amount of Vertex shaders.

In laymans terms - it should offer an overall fast and better gaming experience...

BUT Current DirectX 10 titles are very slow performing compared to their DX9 counterparts so you need a higher range card like the 8800GTS...

I recommend getting the 8800GTS if only to play the most anticipated PC game of the year when it comes out - Crysis... its a big title and your pc will have the power to play it with the ram/cpu you just need the graphics..

How so? With the latest driver revisions it's on a par with a 640mb GTS (and around the same price point) for most things and level with a GTX for the rest.

There's a few benchmarks about bu you need to bear in mind most of the HD2900 benches were done with crap, early drivers.

http://it-review.net/index.php?optio...1&limitstart=3

http://59hardware.net/Actualites/Car...0_GTS_640.html

http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fu....php#comptable (scroll down to the comparison table)

Lots more about, the only downside I've found for this card is the fan noise, nothing that an aftermarket cooler won't cure though (if they're ever released)

Re: I think my PC setup is a bit unbalanced - how about this?

Just remembered :dunce:

I've got a 128 Mb Gigabyte 6600GT card that's a couple of years old knocking around.

Would that be better than my couple of months old 512 Mb 7200LE card?

And by enough to be worth the bother of swapping them around, uninstalling the 7200 drivers and installing the 6600s?

Incidentally, ordered the RAM about 9pm Thursday from Overclockers and it arrived on Saturday - impressive :) Haven't had a chance to pop it in the PC yet though.

Thanks Zing - I guess that means the 6600gt is better, but not by enough to be worth the effort swapping :)
