Problems with Negear wireless router!!!

Have installed a netgearDG8348G wireless router and ever since the speed has been on low or very low. Had someone in to fix it, but speed improved for a couple of days and now it is abismal. Tried to contact Netgear, but their on line support is too technical for me. Any help in non technical terms would be so gratefully received, otherwise I will go back to the modem - it was far quicker.

Re: Problems with Negeat wireless router!!!

Are you using the standard/ default channel for the wireless and is it the wireless speed that is low? If it is then change the channel in use.

Not sure if it is the standard channel, how will i find out and if it is how would I change it? The chap who did it for me put a WEP on it. As mentioned this is all new to me and a bit technical

Who is your service provider & what are the symptoms of your slow speed? e.g. slow browsing or slow downloads?

deniset 29-08-2007 21:59

Re: Problems with Negeat wireless router!!!

Wanadoo is the service provider. Speed is slow downloading and browsing is becoming nearly impossible now

What type of speeds did you get beforehand?

Re: Problems with Negeat wireless router!!!

To find out which channel you're using & change it, do the following:

In your browser type http://192.168.0.1 into the address bar.

In the logon dialogue box enter admin as the user name & password as the password.

In the Setup section of the main menu select the Wireless Settings option.

On the resulting screen you'll see an entry for Channel. It will probably be set to 11, so try changing it to 7 & click on the Apply button.

You'll now probably lose your connection to the router, so exit your browser & reboot the PC.

See if your connection speed is any better...

Do you have an Ethernet cable that you can plug into the router & your PC's network card socket?

It's definitely 0.1 for version 3. What does the label on the bottom of the router say?

deniset 29-08-2007 23:12

Re: Problems with Negeat wireless router!!!

Is there a free end also? If so, plug it into your pc and it should override the wireless (i think). Then follow guidelines given above. You say someone set it up for you, you do know the password and username don't you?

deniset 29-08-2007 23:53

Re: Problems with Negear wireless router!!!

yes it is connected to the PC! I have the password and user name but because the signal strength is so low it wont connect to the http://192.168.0.1. AArrrrGGGh!!

Which username and password are you trying to logon with ? The default is

username:admin

password:password

deniset 30-08-2007 09:25

Re: Problems with Negear wireless router!!!

Im using the one the man who set up the wep used. I have also tried the default one with admin and password, I cannot access with either of these as the signal strength seems to be so low and the page never opens

Re: Problems with Negear wireless router!!!

In the Start menu, click on Run & in the box that appears type command & enter.

In the window that opens, type ipconfig & enter & post what output you get.

You can close the window by typing exit & enter...

Re: Problems with Negear wireless router!!!

Connection - specific DNS Suffix
Ethernet Adaptor Local Area Connection
IP Address 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1
Ethernet adaptor wireless network connection
Media status.....media disconnected

Cobbydaler 30-08-2007 21:02

Re: Problems with Negear wireless router!!!

So 192.168.0.1 is the correct IP address for your router because it gives that as the gateway.

Can you still not get into the router interface by typing that into the address bar?

Is your browsing still slow even though you're connected wired?

deniset 30-08-2007 21:17

Re: Problems with Negear wireless router!!!

Correct, still cant get into the browser interface and the browsing is still very slow

Re: Problems with Negear wireless router!!!

Does the netgear have an option to disable admin access via wireless? I know linksys routers do. This may explain why you can't get to the router config page. Try connecting via a ethernet cable, a low signal strength shouldn't stop you from accessing the config page.
