PC running really slowly - any advice?

Hi guys and gals :wavey:

The PC's been running hugely slowly recently. I've run a defrag and cleared a load of old files, but I can't seem to get it running any quicker.

We're on BT internet (Option 3) with the home hub and running IE 8.0 (I think). Has anyone got any suggestions on how to speed it up a little?

Cheers in advance :)

have you run msconfig and stopped all but your av and security from starting at boot? click ctrl alt and del and look in processes to see whats hogging resources

Re: PC running really slowly - any advice?

Have you tried Ctrl + Alt + Del

see what your cpu usage is, I had 100% on boot up, was a dodgy file and had to do a complete system reinstall

Hmmm, depends on how you define 'hogging' - iexplore is using 41,900k, skype's on 22,648, CCAP's on 14,204 and svchost is 11,944). Everything else is below 10,000. CPU usage is anywhere from 2 to 11%. Not that I understood a word of that, but there you go :disturbd:

start run and type msconfig . Stop everything from running except antivirus and reboot pc see if you still have problems. How much ram do you have?

Who mentioned slower than me? That'd require a re-definition of space-time :D

Hmmm, that seems to have sped it up a bit.

Right, how do I find out how much ram I have :erm:

see how it runs for a bit. It wouldnt hurt to have more ram but its not essential at this moment (I take it your running xp?)

Also, check that your IDE controllers haven't fallen out with DMA:

In Device Manager

Expand IDE/ATAPI controllers tree

Check properties of instances for Primary and Secondary IDE channels

Advanced Settings Tab

"Current Transfer Mode" should be detecting "Ultra DMA Mode x" for each connected device.

Yup, XP it is :)

I've uninstalled a few odds and sods for the time being, so I'll see what happens.

Thanks for the help guys :)

Sorry matey, only just seen this 'cos I'm watching the football at the same time :)

I have Adobe photoshop and reader but, as far as I know, they're not actually running until I open them (or until I put the memory card from my phone in)...

Obviously (and likely) I'm wrong, but who can tell :disturbd:

What antivirus do you use, ive heard that Norton can slow a PC down to rediculous levels.

I cannot comment with any cred, here, because I don't have adsl or norton - all I can say is that using a free service like AVG anti virus, backed up with comodo firewall has worked for me, presumably that would be platform independent?

|MG| Free Download - HijackThis 1.99.1

This is what I mean by a Hijackthis log. If you can run a scan, save a logfile then paste the logfile into a post...

Sorry if this sounds simplistic and you've probably done this already, but have you checked for adware/spyware?
