Personally I would dual boot it for now until you are sure of what you are happy with. Windows Vista with a linux/ Ubuntu dual boot.

Kubuntu is a good starter install or Freespire. Normally works out of the box and support is better these days.

Re: Get My New PC Today :D
so which one of you wonderful Linux guys are gonna go round hold his hand install it and get everything he needs working on it then?
Sometimes it really makes me laugh with Oh thats just about minimum spec for vista and id install Linux of one type or another but you all know its not as easy as you make it out for someone who hasnt run it for ages. |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
You're right man, Linux isn't easy.
But as there is no OS at all installed yet... :) |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
I have installed vista for the time being. cant activate it though because i dont have a cd key for this pc used my vista cd from my laptop. can you run live messenger on linux
|
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
im not saying do not try linux I do not try to shove windows down peoples throats but im realistic.Windows is easy everything pretty much is written for it. Support is much more readily available. When I tried Ubuntu last year the help I received here was good but a lot of the help I received was links to massive read me sites that didnt really help at all. So I a relatively intelligent man just thought stuff this for a game of soldiers and went back to an OS I could just use

I have found that when you ask about a problem with linux, the masses just say google it, that dont help anyone. But I have had great help here from cobbydaler and my mate who is at the end of msn/gaim who I can ask for help. but the masses just say google it, I have found only one other place to be like that and surprisingly enough it is javaranch ik EDIT: I have sent away for kubuntu... I have suse 9.3 pro, but I was told the new kubuntu is better, by my mate who I trust with linux |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D

i booted in linux for the first time today in a year, and i had no problem adjusting. mind you i found it easy to adjust the first time i tried linux..par from a few networking things.. Linux is easy to learn... P.S Vista does require high specs to run nice, when it shouldnt, its only an OS, not a top of the line game, remember that. And on top of that all you get is a rather poor effect at 3d animations, which are hugely slow, and very impractical when multi tasking. |

What do i have to prove? Nothing much really. Infact, google christopher reid and contact him, he'll tell you i've worked with his company 1st/2nd/3rd line support. I know alot about PC's tyvm. And if you cant use linux, and cant understand it, i think it's you who need's to prove something, mate. :p: |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
In fact I think Im just gonna stop using this place as much. Im sick to death in loads of IT tech sections people trying to shove linux down others throats im sick of this.
I choose not to persevere with Nix cuz I have other things to do and afterall the majority use Windows the minority keep on at the rest to change reminds me a bit of the bloody current affairs section and im sick of that also |

I just said it's quite easy to use, and anyone who bothers to take the time to do so will find that out. As for minority being on windows, desktop wise? yes. Server wise and Industry wise, nope :) |

BTW, I am a long-term Vista, Linux (ubuntu) and Mac OS user, and, tbh, still can't really recommend Linux for the desktop user. Linux has progressed a lot, but still has a way to go. Actually, I should rephrase that last bit. I still can't recommend it for the desktop user who isn't willing/able to learn new things. Now, perhaps we could get off the "Vista/Linux is crap" box and start talking about exactly why he should use an OS, rather than why he shouldn't? |

Zingle I hope the 'Had enough take care and goodbye' as your sig only is a temporary one.
Don't take everything too personally, espescially on forums. :tu: |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
Vista works fine on my spec, though Nvidia really need to sort out a stable driver for the nforce3 AGP - PCI bridge. Thankfully I don't have an ATI card, and this board is a stopgap until I can get PCI-E board plus silent DX10 graphics for under £100 (looking at the Asus M2V at the mo, it has all the PCI slots and is AM2 but can't find a card yet) anyway.
Nick: With 4GB of RAM, if you want to use more than the x86 ceiling, you will need to use x64 Vista which has compatibility issues. Otherwise you won't get it all recognised in Vista anyway. XP would have no idea what to use with that spec. Zingle: Don't go, the forum will be worse off without you, everyone values your advice. |

When you start multitasking vista starts getting slow, aero lags. I've seen this on multiple setups myself, and it's become quite boring having IT firms ringing up because their vista business is running slower than XP on a 286 20mhz 1mb ram pc setup. Dell are now giving users the option to get XP with thier setups, because they have deemed vista a failure. Vista just isnt selling well in any stores i've been to, its known to be bloated and slow. I use XP, Vista (unfortunetly), Linux (gentoo, suse, and ubuntu) And Mac OSX also on a daily basis, out of all of them, vista is the slowest, especially boot and shut down times. I mean come on, the audio stack bug (which STILL hasnt been fixed!!) which decreases network performance when audio is playing, how did someone not see that when error reporting? Microsoft said vista would "Wow" people, it simply doesnt, nearly ALL the things that were supposed to be there are gone, and from what i am aware are not even going to make it in "7". Like it or not, apart from the new memory management, the rest is a shambles (audio stack is, thats why creative are finding ways to get around it and use hw acceleraiton for audio), the network stack is laughable, the kernal is so-so. UAC is just annoying, why they bothered even implementing it is beyond me, it works nothing like within linux. I've had plenty of friends, even with new quad core setups try vista and go crawling back to XP within a month. Sorry, im ranting :P IT Tech, so whatcha expect hehe. As for linux being ready for the desktop? depends on what the user on the other end wants. But mainstream, probably not, but compiz fusion sure is showing how much of a failure vista actually is. ---------- Post added at 15:29 ---------- Previous post was at 15:27 ---------- Quote:
I never said it used to much CPU btw, the gui is just bloated, so everything feels slower at responding, try ticking a box for example, something simple like that and you notice the lag from aero. |

Anyway, i have put Vista Home Premium on and it is all working fine had to try and find some drivers though but all is good now. I just need a new keyboard and mouse
PS: Vista Rules!!! |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
I like the look of vista, but thats it.....
I think there will be new good looking themes for xp that make it look just like vista, not kind of like vista. although, I have found on linux you can make it like aero if you chose and play around a bit... I like both, dont both sides flame me now.... it is good for a change ik |

So you've installed an illegal version of Vista have you, you naughty schoolboy! Still don't see the point of the Aero interface - granted it looks nice and all, but the only useful function is the thumbnail icons in the start bar...you can keep your 3D flip, and transparent windows thanks Bill! |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
No i havnt put an illegal version on because i allready own a licence for it on my laptop. I have installed Windows Vista Home Premium on this pc not puttting any installation key in so the pc cant activate. i just want to see how fast it runs thats all
|
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
Nick is right (for once)- you can essentially add any vista install onto any PC using a DVD by not entering a product key during setup.
It essentially lets you install a 30 day trial of Windows on the PC, this is intentional, so that you can test it for things like compatibility before activating it. I wipe them about the same time period anyway, but I use the same thing for virtual machines - install Ultimate, without putting a key in, then wait until the 30 days is up - for testing new applications before I install them on the main PC. |

And if you can't get Vista running at a reasonable speed with your spec of machine, I'd stop spouting about your skills because in the consumer workplace, they don't exist. |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D

Again, as i said, vista, is just xp with a new gui, a rather poor network stack, audio stack, and a kernal which is bloated like hell, if your happy with that's fine, its people like that, that keep me, in my job. Linux not easy for the average user? Are you calling the average user extremely dumb then? Are you saying they have a really low iq? You must be, because linux is very simple to use, if the person actually chooses to use his brain and read up on something. I'm sorry that you, have been spoilt by windows with simple "yes, no" prompts. Ah does anyone remember back in the day? when you actually needed to have a brain to use a PC? oh those days was fun!!! |
Re: Get My New PC Today :D
Right seeing people can't behave and keep the thread moving along without resorting to 'My OS could kick you OS's head in' comments I'm closing the thread.
The original point was resolved many posts ago and despite a warning some people don't seem able to behave Thread Closed |
