Ok is 800k per second file download speed or browsing speed ?

Wireless securty WEP/WPA will cause some slowdown on your connection, as will the fact the router is running a stateful packet inspection firewall.

Check to see on the router if respond to ICMP is disabled on the wan port, If so enable it.

From the user manual :-

Configuring WAN Setup OptionsThe WAN Setup options let you configure a DMZ server, change the MTU size and enable the router to respond to a Ping on the WAN port. These options are discussed below

Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port If you want the router to respond to a 'ping' from the Internet, click the ‘Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port’ check box. This should only be used as a diagnostic tool, since it allows your router to be discovered. Don't check this box unless you have a specific reason to do so.

Re: Netgear Router Slows Down My Broadband

800KB/s sounds reasonably fast for a wireless connection to me.

Try connecting the PC to one of the router's LAN ports with a cable.

Have you tried the above steps ? and also afterwards did you reboot the router ?

The pure and simple truth is that using wireless you will never sustainably acheive a perfect 1.2mb download speed. You may obtain it some times.

On 20mb downloading from Giganews with 20 connections I see generally between 1.9mb and 2.2mb per second, perhaps twice in the past week have i seen it at 2.4mb and then for only a very very limited time. And my network is running only on MAC filtering and a hidden SSID

Are you and your brother operating your routers on the same channel? If you are (and they are in the same house) you may be getting some interference from his router.

Re: Netgear Router Slows Down My Broadband

My Brother is in a different house and we use the same channel who it be a good idea to upgrade the firmware or mobo is a bit old but supports usb 2.0

You already have a router - with LAN ports - just try one!

My wireless can easily do 2.4mbps

Ok, you could also look at flashing the firmware on the router,

http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d102798.asp here are the instructions and I have zipped the firmware and attached

WARNING: Follow the instructions VERY carefully, Do not attempt to flash the firmware of your router using a wireless connection !!!!

Perform a hard reset on the router.

To flash the router

disconnect the router from the cable modem, connect ONLY the PC you are going to use to flash the router via a network cable

Not sure I can understand how you have connected however this is how it should be

Connection from modem to routers wan port

If using wired connection from one of the four port switches to the network card on the PC

Wirless..... etc etc

so let me get this straight I need to switch power on to the router and then connect the cable modem to the ethernet port on pc and leave the router with just the power on is that correct

to flash the router do the following

1) Power off the router

2) Disconnect the cable modem from the router

3) The PC that you are going to flash the router MUST be connected via a network lead to the back of the four port switch on the router NOT the WAN port

4) Power on the router

Wait for the router to become ready and then perform the flash

To use in normal operation

1) Power of the cable modem and router

2) Power off the router

3) Connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the router using a network cable

4) If you are using a network cable to connect the PC to the router connect it now

5) Power on the cable modem, wait for it to become ready

6) Power on the router, wait for it to become ready

7) Test

Ok I think I found out the reason let me know if you can help change this i think the usb ports are bandwidth sharing and thats what is slowing me down

Re: Netgear Router Slows Down My Broadband

Ok,

Has the router come back on ?

What do you have connected via USB that is causing bandwidth sharing issues ?

If thats the case then no, bandwidth over usb would be the fact that the usb port in a pc supplies power at 500ma so no i cant see how that would cause an issue

Is the router back up and running again ?

Re: Netgear Router Slows Down My Broadband

Re: Netgear Router Slows Down My Broadband

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

Download TCP optimizer and set the scroll bar to the highest it will go. This is for 20mb. I did this today and can achieve 15mb on my wireless

Edit: Dont forget to restart afterwards!
