Router - USB - HDD - Ethernet - Hell!!!
:( Please Help Me!!!! :(
I want to have a bit of storage on my network, ive only got £25 at the moment and i was wondering if this combination would work? If I plugged this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/80GB-80-GB-2-5...QQcmdZViewItem into this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-2-0-TO-RJ1...QQcmdZViewItem and then into my router, would i be able to acess it? |
Re: Router - USB - HDD - Ethernet - Hell!!!
No. What you need is a NAS (network attached storage) which can cost alot. Cheapest ive seen is about £50

Were?

Re: Router - USB - HDD - Ethernet - Hell!!!
This was £50 in the sale but has gone up now. Even then you had to provide your own HDD

Re: Router - USB - HDD - Ethernet - Hell!!!
Why not just rig up a spare PC as a server with a massive HDD?

Ahhh!! Thanx You two!!! Ive found one on amazon its only a 80GB though. I cant afford to hook a pc up as a server by the way!
Thanx (:tu:) |

Re: Router - USB - HDD - Ethernet - Hell!!!
that entirely depends on what hardware your running it on.
Something like the Compaq SFF that i've had running at home as NAS uses the same as the Buffalo linkstation that we've got at work(tested by a bloke from the carbon trust). Edit, although I do accept the point that an average PC used as NAS would use a lot more that an "off the shelf" NAS device. |
Re: Router - USB - HDD - Ethernet - Hell!!!
ok, dont think anyone has got spare computers hangin around anyway. someone in my family has got about 20 PCs in her house, if she dosnt want them she'll do that for herself anyway. Or she'll probably sell them. Its more than likely she will use them as servers because she is memory mad. Shes got loads of hard drives.

yes

Re: Router - USB - HDD - Ethernet - Hell!!!
I just bought one of these and one of these to go inside it and it is all going swimmingly so far. 500GB of networked, shared storage for all the family photos, movies and music plus a backup of my important data with a single click using this. And all for a smidgen under £110.
I've also set up FTP access and forwarded the relevant port to allow me to access all of my files across the internet should I require it. |
