Wireless Network problems..
I have been using Dlan setup (through the Electricity circuit) sucessfuly for 9 months - Cable modem downstairs going into the Dlan socket nearby with a Dlan socket upstairs going into the PC via USB - all perfectly running almost out of the box! I have recently aquired a laptop with a Wireless card - and added a Dlan wireless unit to the setup. After installation of the software - the connection to the Dlan Wireless is detected by the Laptop - but i get "unable to resolve ip address and no connectivity" - i decided to input the Dlan ip manualy - so i entered the IP and Subnet but was very unsure about the DNS gateway. It now connects and has an excellent signal but i cant browse any webpages atall.
My Question is what DNS details do i provide and will this rectify the issue. I Would be very greatful for any ideas. P.S - Be aware im not very tech savvy!!! |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
on your computer that is working.
click start->run enter "cmd" and press enter type "ipconfig /all" and press enter you should now have listed the gateway, subnet, dns servers etc etc the only thing you should enter different on your laptop is the IP address If your computer is say 192.168.1.2 you will probably want your laptop to be 192.168.1.3 personally i would use something like 192.168.1.22 or something different rather than sequencial incase of conflicts. |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
really interested to hear how u get on with this set up, surprised the wireless setup hasn't been as intuitive as i'd have thought.
if i can help just shout. |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
Do you have a router connected to the modem, as this is required to share the broadband connection. Otherwise only one connection can work at a time.

Re: Wireless Network problems..
Does the dlan device have a DHCP server built in?
Is the IP address an internal address like 192.168 or 172. or 10. ---------- Post added at 20:35 ---------- Previous post was at 20:33 ---------- Your cable modem will have an public IP address. A router will have an internal address for example you could set 10.10.10.1. This is your gateway/router address. Your desktop and laptop will be give an IP address via the router's DHCP server for example 10.10.10.2/3 |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
You see this is where i get so confused - please be patient with me.
im changing details (ip,subnet etc) in the properties for the wireless connection on my laptop. I also have the option to configure the Wireless device but as i understand it has no built in DHCP(?) to configure ip address. Really well and truly confused. thanks for help so far! ---------- Post added at 20:50 ---------- Previous post was at 20:47 ---------- where i am at the moment - i have two networks showing on my laptop - 1 is the Wireless conection and the other is the wireless network card. I can also configure the wireless Dlan socket. What im confused with is what to configure on each of these. I have a strong signal strength when i manualy input an ip etc. But when i leave the "obtain ip auto" on i have limited or no connectivity. Any help will be greatky received. |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
Whats the model number of the Dlan socket, and I'll look to see what it can and can't do.

Re: Wireless Network problems..
The current setup - thats working fine.
Downstairs. Upstairs. Modem -------- Dlan socket-----(electricity supply)----Dlan socket ----PC What i cant intergrate. Dlan Wireless socket -----(wireless)-----Laptop |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
Do you need a password for the wireless access?

Re: Wireless Network problems..
You need a router to share your internet connection.
Cable Modem --- Router --- DLAN Socket }--- DLAN Socket --- PC .................................................. ...... }--- DLAN Socket --- Laptop You could have purchased a wireless router to connect directly to the laptop, and thus not needing the wireless DLAN socket. Look at manual http://download.devolo.net/webcms/05..._en_online.pdf Look at image under section 4.2 (Home networking option 2). Ignore the ADSL modem as this will be your Virgin cable modem. |

Modem - Wireless Router - Dlan socket ------Dlan socket---PC and the wireless router would handle the Laptop. Many thanks all |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
ok so this is a wireless extender designed to enhance an existing wireless network?
I'm a little confused myself......being with BT i'd really hoped i would have a place for a homehub downstairs and integrate it more seamlessly into a home av setup. Hoped the devolo kit would also enable a non invasive implentation of technology upstairs without much degredation of signal......still reading this thread with interest. |

My concern is that i need somthing that connects modem to a wireless router downstairs (without a PC nearby) then to the Dlan socket downstairs - and if im right in thinking i then would be able to connect upstairs PC via Dlan as usual and the Wireless Router would enable me to connect the Laptop to the internet. Any suggestions on a standalone Wireless Router that is compatable? |

I would of thought something such as a belking f5d7230 think they are 34.99 in pc world. connect the cable modem to the wan port on your new router then a network cable from one of the four network points on your router to the downstairs dlan dlan should work and then also so should the wireless make sure you reboot the cable modem before you attach the router |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
Use the wireless router for your laptop, and the existing DLAN setup for your desktop. The DLAN sockets means that you don't have to put any ethernet cabling around your home, so it's still a useful product.

Re: Wireless Network problems..
ah got it.....
so for me, adsl modem/router connected to dlan, ethernet to xbox from modem/router, plus the benefits that the modem/router is also wireless, so thats all downstairs. upstairs, dlan connected to desktop pc and somewhere else upstairs the wireless dlan extender. ........correct? |
Re: Wireless Network problems..
You don't need a router with ADSL installed if you are using a cable modem.
Cable Modem --- Router --- DLAN Socket --- Desktop .................................\--- Wireless --- Laptop .................................\--- Ethernet Cable --- xbox |

not and ADSL modem router (unless you are on broadband) if you are on virgin cable you will need a DSL router only. the setup to my mind should look like this cable modem ----- wireless router --- downstairs dlan and xbox connected via ethernet wireless does laptop |

Everyone has their own personal preferences, in the past I have used Netgear, Dlink and Belkin, Im currently using a cheap belikin wireless router F5D7230 which i got from PC World for thirty five quid. it was an absoloute doddle to setup and has all the features I need. It sits next to my cable modem downstairs the Xbox 360 is connected to one of the four switch ports I have a media home hub connected to another and my and my housemates connect via the wireless. Had one initial problem with it which i have added to the belkin setup guide in the stickied comments at the top of this page. so far so good |

Re: Wireless Network problems..
@ mrmistoffelees, its a Linksys adsl wireless modem/router so i think we're just jousting over terms here. plus i'm a BT customer on broadband.
u think the wireless dlan upstairs would be overkill? |
