I have an cable through NTL - now Virgin Media I have bought a LINKSYS WRT300N to have a wireless network Problem is, when i plug the router into the existing modem (ntl home 200) the internet doesn't work The light for the ethernet doesn't show up any ideas guys? Thanks in advance |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
Have you rebooted the modem ?
|
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
:welcome:
First question - have you powercycled the modem? You must turn off/on the modem whenever you change the attached device. |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
yes guys, i have re-booted the modem
is there any settings i have to change the ntl signal is dsl i believe? do i have to change anything thanks |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
You shouldn't have to. Should just be a case of connecting the modem to the router, restarting everything.
When you say your Ethernet light isn't lit up, is the CAT5 cable plugged in properly to the router and computer ? |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
yes, i've checked the cables
kinda at a loss |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
What LED's are lit on the modem & router?
Can you browser to the router admin page on your PC (192.168.1.1), and if so what does the status page show? |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
hi,
power ON port 1 ON wireless ON security ON internet OFF unable to connect to 192.168.1.1 console after the wizard has run, it says "unable t locate wireless end broadband router on network....." any ideas? thanks in advance |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL

Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
With the internet light not lit up, the only thing I can think of now, is a faulty lead or lead in the wrong port (done that before myself lol). Might be worth just double checking the right cables are going in the right holes :)
Modem > router (WAN) Router > computer (LAN) Not trying to imply anything, I just know i've done it before and it took me ages to figure out i'd done it wrong. :) |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
ok i may be a little dumb here, but shouldnt the cable from modem-router and the cable from router-pc both be cat5e or cat6
please? if they are different cables then that is my problem i have tried a couple of different cables just in case thanks in advance ---------- Post added at 10:59 ---------- Previous post was at 10:16 ---------- the WAN port is connected to the modem via a cat5e cable the port 1 is 1 0f 4 ports connected to computer via a cat5e cable |

The cable should not matter. There is obviously a configuration problem. Try a hard reset on the router and see if that works. Also try cloning the MAC of the modem into the router. And make sure you power cycle. All off, the modem first, router, then pc. |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
ok, will try that. but how do you clone the mac into the router?
|
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
Don't you just love remote diagnosis. A challenge not to be ignored.
As you can't connect from your PC to the Linksys, then the wizzard can't configure the router. It has to do that to detect and set the connection type of the WAN (Internet) port. That's the problem that needs sorting first. Ideas - Firewall? <end of ideas> If you are using ZoneAlarm then the router need to be added to the trusted zone. You will also need to add the CM to the trusted zone so you can logon to it eventually. -- Dave. |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
tried hard re-set to no avail
Wyl E Cyote, thanks but what do you mean? i am not running zone-alarm |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
Have you checked or turned off your firewall?
It's quite safe as you don't have a connection to the internet. -- Dave. |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
Could just be problems at NTL end.
Tried a new rouiter last Friday (6th), would not connect, assumed it was faulty. Tried loads of times, old router worked ok. Tried Sunday morning, connected immediately, ok since. Check the sevice status logs and phone the service status line. Both sohwed imtermittment faults in my area that weekend. |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
I thing something is stopping your PC from communicating with the router. The status light only shows that there is a working NIC on the other end of the cable.
If you're not using Zone Alarm then you've probably got the Windows firewall or a Norton Firewall enabled. I suggest trying without any firewall enabled. -- Dave. |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
guys, i am pulling my hair out here!!
i have disabled firewall on router an pc, i have tried cloning the mac address still nothing!! any more ideas? please!!! |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
With you saying you've disabled the firewall on the router, that will mean you can get to the status page of the router?
|
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
yes sorry i can, i can get into the admin page (console)
|
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
On the status page, whats the first part of the IP address ?? ie 169 or 192 or 81?
|
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
192.168.1.100
when it goes through the set up process it says "cannot detect interent connection" |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
mmmm, puzzled now.....i'm guessing thats the LAN address. Whats the WAN address? (only beginning bit will do )
|
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL

Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
Am I correct in assuming, in order for you to post on here, you are constantly switching the connection ? lol.
Not really sure what else to suggest. Is the internet light on the router still not lighting up? Have you tried resetting the router to factory defaults and trying again from scratch. Sorru to post so many questions, just going on the assumption you are switching so trying to save you some hassle :) |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
thanks for all the help you are giving me and dont worry about all the questions
yes i am switching to try out new things i have re-set the router and no luck no light comes up, but when the router re-starts it flickers once (router test i guess) |
Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
the only thing i can really think of is that there is either a faulty wire from the modem to the router, or a faulty WAN socket on the router? Sorry, can't really think what else it can be, as the router isn't seeing the internet connection at all.

Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
tried different cables and no luck there very odd i agree

Re: Linksys WRT300N - NTL
