New Seven Wonders of the World

Personal favorites of mine are...
The Colosseum in Rome, Jordan's Petra - the famed Rose City.

Petra is amazing, a whole city carved out of a mountain. Pretty impressed with number 2 as well ;) :)

Wasn't stonehenge in the running at some point for inclusion might be wrong.

I'm a little surprised by #2 (which really doesn't look that impressive to me). I'm also surprised that the pyramids and Angkor didn't make the list. Angkor Wat itself is pretty impressive, but with all the other temples that make up the complex it is without a doubt the most impressive thing (structure wise) I've seen in my life. We spent 5 day there. Four days visiting the main temples, one day to revisit the really special ones, and one day visiting the 'outlying temples'. I'd go back at the drop of a hat.

Some nice photos here

I'm glad Chichen Itza made the list... Its an amazing place and well worth visiting. Sad that Stonehenge didn't make it.

I dont know why they dont just scrap the whole 'seven' thing and go for a higher number like 8 or 9.

Frankly mankind hasn't anything on mother nature. As far as I'm concerned the seven wonders of the world are all natural..There's the Grand Canyon to name one...She's also a better sculptor and artist as well. :)

I think Petra is probably the best of the lot in that list.

Anyone remember what the original 7 wonders were?

The last two are the Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus and the Statue of Zeus at Olympia.

The Mausoleum is of king Mausollos apparently. I wonder where the word mausoleum comes from :)

The last one is the statue of Zeus at Apollo.

Nice work gents, does anyone know the one (apart from the pyramid) that escaped complete destruction?

The palace at babylon?

http://ce.eng.usf.edu/pharos/wonders/gardens.html

Quote:

More recent archaeological excavations at the ancient city of Babylon in Iraq uncovered the foundation of the palace. Other findings include the Vaulted Building with thick walls and an irrigation well near the southern palace. A group of archaeologists surveyed the area of the southern palace and reconstructed the Vaulted Building as the Hanging Gardens. However, the Greek historian Strabo had stated that the gardens were situated by the River Euphrates. So others argue that the site is too far from the Euphrates to support the theory since the Vaulted Building is several hundreds of meters away. They reconstructed the site of the palace and located the Gardens in the area stretching from the River to the Palace. On the river banks, recently discovered massive walls 25 m thick may have been stepped to form terraces... the ones described in Greek references.

Am off on a cruise of Egypt and Jordan in November - am looking forward to seeing Petra.

Thought Stonehenge might have made it.

I visited Stonehenge just a few weeks ago, and I was slightly surprised as it is a lot smaller than I expected it to be. Still very impressive (but not on a par with Angkor, or the Taj Mahal).

It's not so much the monument itself that's impressive, more how the damn thing got there. I studied it many moons ago at school. Amazing.
