What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

I currently have an AMD 64 3200+ venice processor (socket 939) and 2gb of DDR400 RAM running in dual channel mode.

Seeing socket 939 processors are starting to become extinct and the fact i don't need to upgrade my system completely yet, i want to eventually buy the fastest AMD 64 X2 processor available.

Am i right in thinking that the current fastest X2 processor for a 939 socket motherboard is a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 Dual-Core and do you think i should upgrade to this as soon as possible before it's to late?

My motherboard is a Asus A8N5X and i'm pretty sure it'll be able to take this processor with a bios upgrade?

Cheers.

FX60 iirc. I think there was a 4800 skt 939 also.

Jump ship man Intel prices have dropped loads the newer conroes 2140 and 2160 with low core speeds 1.6 1.8 are coming in under 70 quid with the 4400 running at 2 gig at 93 quid. You wont pick up a skt 939 cpu cheap as they are rare now and people want them

That sounds expensive. :)

I was thinking of a cheap upgrade and i can get the 4200+ for about £91.

you could buy the upgrade asrock board with a c2d for 130 or less if you go for the budget model (ensure compatability with your ram and gfx first)

I can get a X2 4200 for around £91 and i can't really jump ship at that price. As that would mean a Motherboard RAM and CPU upgrade i really don't think i need that yet.

So i'm thinking of getting the best X2 i can and eventually get a good Directx 10 card when i have money. I can then get back into PC first person shooter games. :)

If i had money to throw away i'd be Intel conroe all the way though. :)

Damn it, you always give me something to think about! I really don't want/need a new PC yet as this has good components in it and i don't current play games on it.

I can't jump ship for £91 with 2gigs of RAM and a good intel processor yet can i? If i can i need links. ;)

no it wouldnt why would it? incidentally I bought a pentium D 915 this week for 35 quid married it up with an Abit ip95 mobo for 32 quid (this board takes ddr400) with onboard gfx. WHat graphics you got now? you could buy an asrock board like I said with agp and ddrI with a c2d for less ill link ya brb

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...roductId=26474 mobo 38 quid

2140 58 quid http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...roductId=27106.. 96 quid ok a few quid more ;)

Oh i missed that bit about the RAM. :dunce:

If i eventually jump ship for around £130 it'll be for an Intel conroe.

Thanks for your help mate. :)

Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 faster than a AMD 4200 X2? If it is i'll definately jump ship rather than swap my processor out when the time comes.

its newer better architecture. If you buy a better HSF it will clock to 2 gig I bet it will even clock a bit on the asrock.

from what I can see these cpus are taking the place on the market of the 925 and 935 Pentium D's Both these cpus run at 3 gig or above so if performance matches and I cant say it wont even though the c2d has a low bus speed. All c2ds ive seen really are amazing beasts

Zing since when you work for intel's Marketing :P

snoopy I would dump a bit of extra cash into the new puter and get a C2D system, you wont regret it I think... as it looks like the only chip you will be able to find is the 4200 and compared to the E6300 thats nothing.

just looked around on my fav websites but finding a skt939 x2 chip is even a pain in the rear end.

I just got that Asrock board Zing and put it with a c2d 6320 and 2gig DDR2 667 and it goes like stink.

mobo £35 - this will take all your old stuff (HDD) as well as new
cpu £101
RAM £47
------
£183 for a brill machine = swoop well chuffed :D

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

939 X2's are as good as extinct these days especially the good ones (4400+ and 4800+ were canned a long time ago)
This is all due to the amd's cunning shoot oneself in both feet plan.

The first stage was remove all good cpus (1meg cache per core) and make them opteron only, the second stage was a rapid kill off the 939 platform, and forcing people who just wanted a little more cpu power to shell out for new ram and the am2 platform.
However this has backfired as instead of going from 939-> AM2 the bulk of the crowd are going to S775 and the core 2 duo lineup as the c2d costs similar, peforms better, has imediate upgrades avaliable in the form of the core 2 quad and so far the next gen intel chips are working on current boards
(i975x is what penryn has been showcased with)

if you look at the latest financial results amd are in deep trouble, there price war with intel isnt working as they are still loosing market share and revenue at the same time, operating losses are hughe and they will go under by the end of the year unless they get a drastic turn around (intel and nvidia are ganging up on them tho)

Didnt that test need a voltage regulator modification?

Best performing skt 939 dual core would be a Opteron ;)

nffc 12-05-2007 22:25

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

but let's face it, DDR2 is a vast improvement over DDR.

By using a dual channel board, and very mid-range (5300) speed RAM, 2 GB of it, I get a Vista score of 5.9 for memory which is about as good as it gets.

With DDR, you'd be looking at quite a bit less, especially since PC3200 is old.

2||Para 12-05-2007 22:34

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

Agreed but pc3200 isnt the fastest DDR ram you can buy.

Even so, DDR2 is well better.

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

Well DDR3 is gonna be even better again save up buy a bearlake board but wait till dual ram capability is implemented . (the chipsets capable of running both but Asus in their wisdoms done one or other not both)

which skt 939 opterons quicker than the fx60 then?

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

My 165 @ 3.1ghz for starters admittedly it was lidless and under water but it was.Plus it is less than 1/2 the price of a FX60 which i my opinion makes it a more reasonable choice.

zing_deleted 12-05-2007 23:28

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

so an equally cooled and overclocked fx 60 would be quicker would you agree???

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

Yup,but also would take him into the price bracket of a full C2D system would it not?

zing_deleted 12-05-2007 23:31

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

incidentally that cpu is still available and would be an option for overclocking if a new board isnt an option

They are a awesome cpu for the money but no patch on a 6320 of similar value. My next step is a 6400 once this SD4000 finallyy gives up the ghost.

But them opterons are multiplier unlocked if you have a compatible board with multiplier settings it does make for easier overclocking. I remember when they were released I was itching but by the time I upgraded my 3800 x2 I was going lga775 and overclocking the 805

2 very good points there from both of you :)

One of the lads on OcUK swears by his 805! Pretty sure he had it at well over 4ghz as well.I think the record on extreme is over 5ghz for a 805.

I've just fired up Battlefield 2 for the first time in well over a year since buying an Xbox 360. Although i do love playing games on the Xbox 360 i always liked the true FPS game better on the PC due to the faster mouse/keyboard control system and to top it off i'm getting a ping of 15 in UK servers! (thanks VM)

So i've decided later this summer when i've got some money i'll upgrade my system to atleast a Intel Conroe E6600 and a DX10 card just so i can whoop Zingles **** on a good game. ;)

[edit]

I guess i'll need Vista for DX10?

Give the RIP City server a try.I stopped playing there a few weeks back due to 200+ ping :Yikes: not bad for a UK server.Im hoping VM have this sorted now though as my mate across the road plays there on a 1-2mb adsl line and pings 30 at most!

Re: What's The fastest AMD Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

I would suggest if your looking to upgrade then simply get a 4000 for your current system, can get them for around £43 (Microdirect) . This way you can wait till your 2gb ram becomes obsoliete and upgrade it all at once.

I have the stk939 and am rather enoyed with AMD for the way they phased it out for AM2.
