WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
If anyone is still using WEP for wireless security as opposed to WPA (or WPA2), be wary.
Codebreakers have discovered a way to crack a 104 bit key in under a minute. It takes a reasonably well specced PC around 3 seconds to process the accumulated data, and display the key. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/04...code_cracking/ |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
yeah, saw this on the real hustle
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pgBHjZUKW54 <-Home Wifi Scam http://youtube.com/watch?v=ScEaD-SikrM <- Another Wifi Scam http://youtube.com/watch?v=dltjEnrePxc <- Blue Snarfing http://youtube.com/watch?v=6vcdt5GQVIw <- Key Logging Scam It is pretty scary on what people will do. The Key logging is perticullay clever IMO... Log the keys, call them up and ask them to login to their online banking where they feel secure! The wifi would scare me if they did that to me at my house, there again, i turn down the Router power so it only just works round the house. |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
I'm still using WEP, what should I change it to...? I have a Linksys WRT54G router with DD-WRT firmware.
These are the options I get: WPA Pre-Shared Key WPA RADIUS WPA2 Pre-Shared Key Only WPA2 RADIUS Only WPA2 Pre-Shared Key Mixed WPA2 RADIUS Mixed RADIUS WEP I'm using WEP at the moment so what should I do? |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
Depends what your wireless NIC will support...
It should at least cope with WPA Pre-Shared Key |

Which encryption method out of the list is the best? |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
What make/model is your NIC?
I'm not a wifi security expert but I think WPA2-PSK is the best you'll get for home use. The radius stuff uses some sort of server I believe... [Edit] Have a read here... |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
I have 3 laptops in the house...
The oldest one has a "Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adaptor" So what's the difference between WPA2 Pre-Shared Key Only and WPA2 Pre-Shared Key Mixed? |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
I think mixed just refers to a mixed network, wireless & wired.
From what I can find, that NIC only supports WEP. Should be relatively cheap to get a PCMCIA card that supports WPA though... :) |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
Damn... if I update the drivers will it support it? (If there are any updates)
|
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
Possibly

Have a read here also.
http://ezinearticles.com/?Wireless-N...WPA2&id=138759 I use WPA personel with AES as my Xbox 360 wireless adaptor doesn't support WPA2. |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
The laptop that has the "Intel Pro/Wireless....." is a IBM Thinkpad T41 and I ran the ThinkVantage System Update but it didn't come up with any updates...
I checked on the Intel website too and I have the latest drivers... How do I find out what software version I have? http://support.intel.com/support/not.../cs-006109.htm What's the difference between AES and TKIP? |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
AES was designed for WPA2 but can be used with WPA if the router/adapter support it. If they do, you'll get given the option. If you can use it, it is more secure than TKIP.
You can find out the driver software version through device manager. Right click on the NIC & choose properties. Go to the driver tab & the version number will be on there... |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
OK so I have driver version 1.2.4.41 but it's not on this list so I'm guessing I can only use WEP?
|
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
That's an Intel list, but the IBM download page for 1.2.4.41 says:

Why don't you go into the control panel entry for the NIC & see if it gives you the option for WPA? |

Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
Is it in the Start menu, or an icon in the notification area (system tray)?
[Edit] Where did you set the WEP key? |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
I have a program called ThinkVantage Access Connections which is for my wireless and wired connections.
It has 6 options for wireless security type: Use Static WEP Keys Use Wi-Fi Proteced Access - Pre Shared Key(WPA-PSK) Use IEEE 802.1x Authentication Use 802.1x EAP Cisco (LEAP) Use 802.1x EAP Cisco (EAP-FAST) Use Windows to configure my network |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
In that case connect to your router by ethernet cable, change the security to wpa-psk & enter a key.
Use the software on the Thinkpad to set up wpa-psk security with the same key... Job done! Repeat with the wireless NICs on the other two laptops. :) |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
Cool... I'm sorry but I have another question... I don't know what key to enter because with WEP you could type a Passphrase in but with WPA I don't think you can...
|
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
Yes, with WPA-PSK the pre-shared key is just a password. Choose a good mix of uppercase, lowercase & numbers. Make it a decent length & you'll be fine...

Sorry about all these questions. |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
You can generate one here...
It gives you options for the length. If you can be bothered to type that many characters into your router & NICs, go for the maximum of 63! ;) |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
I will plug my laptop into the router later and see how it goes.
I can't thank you enough Cobbydaler. :) :tu: You've been very helpful. :tu: |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
No problem...
Hope it stops Granny next door stealing your credit card details.... ;) |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
Thanks it worked. Changed it to WPA-PSK AES and it works on all 3 laptops. The only thing I've found is that the signal strength went down a couple of percent but that's fine. If I need to increase the signal I can anyway because I have DD-WRT. ;)
Thanks again mate. :tu: |
Re: WEP wireless security cracked in 60 seconds
Glad you got it sorted. :)
