Xbox 360 Elite: HDMI-enabled black unit with 120GB HDD in late April

So, looks like the various "Zephyr" rumours were true.

Well, according to some games mag.'s April issue, which it stresses is not an April's Fool joke.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/hd...april-for-479/

http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/20/x...d-120gb-drive/

Ltd Edition black 360 "Elite", placed above the Core & Premium. HDMI output, HDMI cable, 120GB HDD, also apparently runs cooler (& hopefully quieter)....

Mmmmmmmmmmmm.

A white "Elite" will allegedly then replace the Premium later in the year.

Hopefully that white one will be the 65nm one. I'd be inclined to wait for that.

Grrrr will have only had my xbox 3 months at the most by the time this comes out...wonder how much they are going to charge for the bigger drives?...could be time for a internal hardware failure ;)

Yes, They will. No word on cost other than less than $200 (around £100) expect it between £130 and £150 i would think

Rip off like the 20gb ones then!

Especially when its just a bog standard 2.5" sata drive in a box basically.

Seems way too expencive to me... $20 less that the USA PS3 price, and still no wireless or HD Drive or free life subscription to xbox live... Ouch! i think MSoft just matched the PS3 on price, but forgot to match the features.

No, its the 20gb PS3 that it is $20 less than. Which is also missing a lot of features.

Not impressed with the 360 so far. Too many hardware failures, and only Gears of War really worth getting from what I've seen. Played it at a mates - great game.

ermm.. you do realise theres 8 versions of PSone, 12 versions of PS2 and 3 versions of PSP already dont you Tod... so just keep telling yourself that. ;)

I would go as far as to say that with the removal of the emoiton engine, we now have PS3 v2 within a few months. Its norm when they do a new version of the hardware its for the better, and not for the worse. Not so in this case

And how many Operating systems from the people bringing you an Xbox? And how many of those are bug free (lol!!!)

Not sure how you can put Sony down for making minor changes, when i bet most of you complain about windows all day.

The changes remove functionality and the price is higher.

Meh, you should be over here then ;)

Only GoW? Far more than that, & certainly more decent games than the PS3 has...

But anyway..........

If this is true, then I'll be trading in my launch Premium 360 for an Elite 360.

Although I'm not sure whether to hold off for the white one or not... surely the black one will be too soon to be 65nm (as I thought that was later in the year), so the white would prob. be needed for that. Plus, my white HD DVD drive prob. wouldn't go well with a black 360.

I take it you haven't played many then. One of the main problems with the 360 (apart from the dodgy hardware) is that there are TOO many games worth getting, hence the mountainous pile of green DVD cases sat in front of me.

I was wondering about the 65mm chips as well, not to mention that after the elite there may be a price cut (or at least the elite features will go down to the price of the premium)

Anyone know how you would be able to transfer all your saves and paid for content to an 'alledged' Xbox360 Elite machine or for that matter a larger HD?

 Its not possible (at present) me thinks.

Found this: http://www.jolt.co.uk/index.php?articleid=8377 which says:

The latest talk suggests Microsoft could be planning on release a data transfer cable, enabling gamers who upgrade from their standard hard drives to transfer their saves and downloads across to the new device.
BUT that would mean having to keep your original xbox360 ??????

For game saves, I can transfer them between my hard drive and memory unit so you could copy them to the MU and back to the new hard drive. I found DOA and PDZ game saves can not be moved thou :(

Things like Xbox Live Arcarde games are locked to you Gamertag, not the harddrive, so your free to download them again for nothing assuming there paid for previously.

this Might do it although quite a lot of marketplace content is locked down that that if you run it on a different machine to it was downloaded on it will only work whist your signed into xbox live.

I know if your 360 goes faulty you can get them to refund the points so you can rebuy the marketplace content on the new one but whether they'd do that for you just because you bought an elite I don't know.

Link?

I found this that suggests otherwise..

Quote:

The Gamerscore blog, an official Microsoft news organ, lays to rest the rumours that the HD-DVD drive might be required to play future 360 games. According to them the new HD drive is solely intended to play movies, and will not be used to accesss game content. From the article:

"Since announcing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006, we've been clear that it is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies. It will not play games on HD DVD. At this point, we haven't seen anything to suggest that next-gen DVD formats offer a better game experience than current DVD

No chance.

The space is unneccessary.

The read speed is too slow.

Not every 360 owner has one.

MS wouldn't be stupid enough to do a repeat of SEGA's "MegaCD" mistake.

MS have categorically said it's only for movies.

HDMI... still not confirmed, & I don't think MS ever fully denied it before IIRC, they just said they wouldn't comment on speculation. And they had previously said they'd sort out HDMI connection for the 360 "when the need/demand was there".

To be honest, I'm not really sure... I just thought seeing as the PS3 is the most powerful games console to date, including having a Blu-Ray drive, game manufacturers would make use of this technology...?

The PS3 games are padded out with rubbish data on the disk so the games load quicker.

I agree. The majority of games now are cross platform, so why would a developer go to the extra effort of making a bigger version specifically for Blu-Ray/PS3? It's not like they can get away with charging any more for a bigger game and the longer development it would require - they'd still have sell it at the going rate, so what's the incentive to put in the extra work?

True, they do have a habit of being muppets, sometimes.

I think the lack of a HDD as standard for the 360 was an insanely stupid decision, for instance. The "Core" 360 is a waste of space.

[As for WinMe... that's best not mentioned ever again :erm: ]

But I don't think they'd be so stupid as to allow games to use HD DVD, not when only a small proportion of owners have the drive.

Developers wouldn't bother making use of it if hardly anyone could then play their games.

Besides, HD DVD has not won the HD format war (neither side has, although Blu-ray is in the lead at the moment), so to rest everything on it would be very foolish. MS have even said they wouldn't rule out releasing a Blu-ray add-on for the 360, if that ends up winning.

awibble 28-03-2007 07:59

Re: Xbox 360 Elite: HDMI-enabled black unit with 120GB HDD in late April

Looking at the pricing, i think they have made a bad move with the Elite... Its still going to be missing the HDdrive (they would of said Playback only) and its going to be £350 when you add on the HD-drive at £130 its still pretty close to the PS3 price.

When you consider that MS should of made their money back on development, they should be taking the oppertunity to squash the 360. If they could bring it out for £300, or maybe even do a HDdrive bundle for £350 they could stamp it out, and they could help to win the format war at the same time.

The longer they let all the PS3's play blu-ray without competeing the more people are going to pickup a blu-ray disk when they see them. Doesnt matter if you baught it for the play back or not, if you have a HDTV, and a PS3 your gonna be tempted.

MS have definately made the right move, including many of the extras that the PS3 has over them, but i think they should of pushed the price lower, as that would cause real problems for sony, and we all like to see a good fight.at the moment the consoles are split, there a budget console (Wii), the standard console (360 with no extras) and the Pro (PS3). Theres gonna be a new pro with the elite, but its still not going to match the PS3, which it should do.

Damien 28-03-2007 08:28

Re: Xbox 360 Elite: HDMI-enabled black unit with 120GB HDD in late April

No one will really want to buy all blu-ray yet. The risk of building up a collection in a format that might not exist is not worth it over DVD. Microsoft has a advantage over sony anyway with the amount of games and units sold so I dont think they worried about matching the PS3, rather continuing to lead.

If you buy a ps3 can it play normal DVDs?

Yeah of course. Cant upscale well but plays them none the less. My point is about the Blu-Ray drive. Most people, at least movies lovers, would not start a collection on a insecure format. HD-DVD/Blu-Ray are both far too early. DVD is still doing strong and offers what most people need.

phew for a minute i thought if i do buy a ps3 (probably will in about 3-5 months) I'd not be able to watch my dvds on it.

As pointed out in this thread, the xbox360 gives a better picture quality playing DVDs rather than the PS3. ;)

News on pricing:

Quote:

Commenting on the confirmation of the Elite, Peter Moore stated; "Today’s games and entertainment enthusiast has an insatiable appetite for digital high-definition content. Xbox 360 Elite’s larger hard drive and premium accessories will allow our community to enjoy all that the next generation of entertainment has to offer.” And priced initially at $479.99 (approx. £245), sampling all that hi-def goodness won't break the bank. So long as you don't already own an Xbox 360...

Ahem.

The full list of components and accessories inside the new Elite bundle are:

Xbox 360 Elite console (black)
Xbox 360 120GB hard drive
Xbox 360 Wireless Controller (black)
Xbox 360 headset (black)
Xbox 360 HDMI cable
Xbox LIVE Silver Membership
One-month subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold

Of course, if you don't want to pay out for a new machine but could do with a bit extra up top (so to speak) the 120GB hard drive will also be sold separately for a cost of $179.99 (approx. £92).

The Xbox 360 Elite is scheduled to hit retail shelves Stateside from April 29, but as of yet there are no confirmed details on a Euro release or prospective price plan.

There is a price, they said £350 in the Press release which is not a direct conversion so that must be it.

Personally, I am disappointed and will likely just get a premium now. HDMI is cool so is the bigger HD but not worth the increased price/wait.

A conversion of the US price makes it approx £245 mate!

Your conversion makes it cheaper than the Premium, Elite is $70 more than Premium in the states. It will be around £349

Yes, Thats a Direct Conversion but it is not what it will be priced here. The Normal xbox is about £200 pounds using the direct conversion. But its £279 over here. The US price is 1) Cheaper 2) Untaxed

Pricey.... :td:

Data transfer cable :tu:

But only any use if you keep your HDD. Seeing as most existing 360 owners who plan on getting an Elite would surely be trading their old console in, that cable won't be very helpful for them.

OK if you're just buying the HDD on its own though.

HDMI - :tu: but not really needed at all, apart from so MS can say "So what if the PS3 has HDMI, so does the 360".

120GB HDD - :tu: not really needed at all in the UK yet, seeing as the UK's XBLMarketplace is complete & utter crap compared to the US one, and if/when IPTV comes out over here I bet that sucks too. But it's also another response to Sony.

No built-in WiFi :td: - Come on, MS. You obviously did this because of the PS3, so why no built-in WiFi. Hell, even the "cheap & cheerful" console option - the Wii - has WiFi!!!!

No 65nm :td: - Pity. I assume that all the versions (Core, Premium, & Elite) will "go 65nm" later in the year. Be nice to know when...

I'll get one, though, now my launch 360 has gone off to be repaired. Trade-in for an Elite once they're out...

Re: Xbox 360 Elite: HDMI-enabled black unit with 120GB HDD in late April

Fully agree with you there Matt

Seems like a deliberately well timed publicity stunt to me. I suppose the talk of it being "limited edition" is based on the possibility that the Elite SKU will be canned as soon as the new Xenon goes into production.

Sorting the heat and power issues out is surely more important than adding features which are of limited use in the near term.

Tezcatlipoca 31-03-2007 23:22

Re: Xbox 360 Elite: HDMI-enabled black unit with 120GB HDD in late April

I wonder when they're gonna announce a UK/Europe price & date......

I may hang on longer, & wait for them to switch to 65nm.........

Heat & power issues definitely more important than gimmicks, like you say.

Oh, for a reliable 360........

On a side note, thinking ahead to the Elite release, I popped into GAME & Gamestation today, to check what (store credit) trade-in price they currently give for a Premium 360.... £180. Of course, that'll drop if the Premium retail price goes down with the release of the Elite.

Tezcatlipoca 01-04-2007 19:43

Re: Xbox 360 Elite: HDMI-enabled black unit with 120GB HDD in late April

HDMI is fairly unnecessary, though, for most people.

Component can be used for anything up to 1080p for games, 1080i for HD DVDs, & normal SD Progressive Scan for DVDs.

VGA can be used for anything up to 1080p for both games and HD DVDs, and lets the 360 upscale DVDs up to 1080p.

Some 1080p TVs will only take 1080p over HDMI. So if you have one of those, then you need HDMI for 1080p.

If you have a 720p or 1080i TV, then it doesn't really matter.

HDMI is also necessary for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. But, if you don't have an amp/receiver capable of those anyway, then it's again a bit pointless.

The original 360 will not be getting an HDMI cable..... its video output is analogue only apparently. The Elite has an actual separate HDMI output, next to the normal proprietary AV output.

Yes the ANA scaler chip in the original 360 does not handle digital. Microsoft have designed a new digital capable scaler for the Elite.

EDIT: But I suppose at least it's got a hardware scaler ;) (sorry couldn't resist)

I'm perfectly happy with my Xbox 360 and don't see a reason to shell out for the Elite. I know i made the right choice as the PS3 is nothing like what it was made out to be in the beginning.

I'd miss the dual shock if i bought a PS3 but rumours are Sony might bring that feature back. And the fact that the textures are lower quality(something to do with not enough video memory) than on the 360 would bother me. And i think the Xbox 360 controller is way better than the current PS3 one.

I'm not saying i'd never buy a PS3 but at the moment it's very unlikely considering how good the Xbox is.

Looks like they're going to quietly sneak 65nm in perhaps... hopefully in the PAL version if the chips are in production.

Hopefully, otherwise why the delay?

It would also be nice if they improved (*greatly* improved) the UK Video marketplace... otherwise the extra space of the Elite's 120GB HDD is kind of pointless.

Be interesting to see how this one pans out over the next few weeks, hopefully with more tangible proof if it does turn out to be the case.

It doesn't help that Microsoft never actually owned up to the true scale of the 360 reliability issues.
