Online stock/share trading

Anyone here do this?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking of trying it and was wondering if anyone here has any experience of it online.....:)

I did back just before NTL dumped all their stock to pay off their debts.
Made a little, but I know people who lost thousands.

The definition of which is 'someone who invests his clients money until it's all gone' :D

.....any luck with that btw?

On that note: I'm not sure if this is a very good time for dabbling in shares.

I'll tell you how it works. I invested a bit in a world-wide fund towards the end of 2000. Over 6 years, I've had a gain of about 10%. At some point I was down 40%. I'm staying put. It's best to leave this stuff to people who know what they're doing :D

I used UBS, but my stocks were on the NYSE.

I use selftrade - fairly cheap - I like doing it online, it's a lot easier to do your research and everything

how much is it if you don't?

it's 12.50 a trade with selftrade.

Thing is, it's very hard to say "I'm going to trade 10 times a quarter" unless you have a lot of money to throw around - since depending on how well spread your portfolio is (or not) , you may not trade at all?

£12 if you don't. I agree with your points and that selftrade site looks nice and friendly....

I do remember looking at Barclays... but I think the thing that veered me towards selftrade was that it was all online set up, I went through several pages at barclays, giving them all my details, for it then to say 'well send your pack out in the post, sign it and send it back, and then you can start trading' - which was no use, I needed to start trading within the hour (I had a hot tip, so to speak) - selftrade did that

Cool! Did the tip reap rewards? :D

Eventually... though not as soon as planned - I ended up holding onto the stock for a year - made about 50% on it...

I use HDSL (Halifax Share Dealing Service) - very easy to use.

Only do it if you can afford to lose as well as gain.

I use Iweb which is part of Halifax. £10 flat fee with no minimum no of trades. You can also shelter shares in a self select ISA, althought there is a small admin charge.

Personally, I get tips from the Telegraph money website or the BBC pages and the breakout charts someone linked to a while back. Investors chronicle would be a good investment if you are serious.

The markets are a bit volatile atm, but there are some good bargains out there if you look.

Are you after a long term investment (blue chips) or day trading (more risky, but potentially better returns). As Paul says decide how much you can afford to lose and then anything you gain is a bonus. Also remember to take your gains on a regular basis (which I don't)! A 50% gain is only on paper until you actually realise the profit - as has been seen over the last couple of weeks.

HTH.
