When VM launch their own Sky One... What would you like to see on it?

Hello.

Just been thinking... When VM launch thier own vierson of Sky-Onc what would you like to see on it?

And what should the channel name be? (Just what would you like it to be)

My mum says she would like to see Stargate SG1 on it and Stargate Atlantis.

I dont know what your expecting, but dont be getting your hopes up of Virgin making there own Sky One. If they ever do it will take at least maybe a year or two. The amount of money they would have to invest into it to make it as big as Sky One is to much for Virgin Media, or at least i think it will be.

Also Add Stargate reruns, starting at the series before last, and current Stargate Atlantis.

Many seem to favour the big scifi programmes, plus some of the top US crime series.... me too...so long as they don't make the mistake off calling their channels V1 and V2......

If they are going to make them then Virgin One and Virgin two would best to use.

I think that VM should launch a new channel called V One and mirror everything that is broadcast on Sky One. That would really get 'up the nose' of sky.

Its not going to happen though is it, for one they wouldnt be able to get the rights to the same shows and number 2, even if they did it would cost them to much to just get the channel up and running like that.

I expect that is one of the main things being banded about in their meetings - loss of customers/discounts versus cost of hiring the programming. Which will give them the least loss.

Nope, not at all. You just cant make a channel to rival Sky in under a year. I doubt they will even look into doing it, and to be fair it would be cheaper just to get Sky One back.

The only programme I wanted to see on Sky 1 was Deadwood & that's been cancelled after season 3. I'm currently waiting for the DVD release of this as I have seasons 1+2 already.

well they should have done so first

but i don't see why they should ;) the posters on the forums here the last few days seem to hate the content of sky 1 so if they want to please them it wont be anything like that

if they want me back they need a copy of sky 1 but i fear that would cost them more than just keeping what they had

Dam right it sucks! I was happy With Virgin, Yes the picture quailty was poor at times and for some reason my sound can go off but it was only ever for a few hours and was intermitent. Virgin/NTL has been good my last 15 years, seen great shows on skyone over the years.

Now i was forced to go to sky as the big company with all the best stuff could not agree a fee with the Virgin.

The 4400
Stargate Atlantis
Weeds great show with Sexy mom.
Stargate SG1
Rescue Me
Dream Team
Battlestar Galactica
The Dresden Files
Terry Pratchett's Hogfather that was for the kids over Xmas.
Enterprise ( finished but still quality)
Eureka second season!

Surely Virgin Media can make a good channel up, might not be as good as Sky1 however if they put on some shows which people LIKE it could make a very popular channel on the Virgin Media Platform!

There are other programmes that Sky has not chosen to buy that are available elsewhere on VM.Has anyone actually watched The Golden Globe Winner House with Hugh Laurie on the Hallmark channel?Or Jericho on the Hallmark Channel?or CSI on Channel 5?Frankly if you wait long enough any SF show will eventually end up on the Sci fi channel or Bravo or FX or Living eventually. All the shows that you are currently missing WILL find their way onto other channels eventually EVEN the FOX produced ones, you just have to be patient.TV programme producers have to make as much money as they can out of a series and eventually that means selling to rival channels even at a loss to get their full market value.Even the Simpsons are available eventually on the BBC.;)

Just be patient.Tv programmes are like trains and buses.Eventually they arrive late and into a different depot.;)

Re: When VM launch their own Sky One... What would you like to see on it?

No its a thread about what people want to see on Virgin Media's own Sky One channel 'Virgin One' when they launch it.

I turned it around to mention that it will be extremely unlikely to happen as it would cost to much money to make a channel to rival Sky One, They would have to get the channel on air for at least 12 hours and then buy the rights to top shows with there latest episodes along with reruns of other shows. Plus they would have to keep getting shows for VOD while still investing other things. Dont forget thats just 'Virgin One' what about 'Virgin News' and 'Virgin Sports News' ect ect.

There is no business sense at this moment it time for Virgin Media to make their own channels. It would be cheaper for Virgin Media to take back the Sky channels and then carry on as they were with VOD, upgrading broadband ect ect.

This is not coming from a Sky 'fanboy' but someone speaking sense istead of sitting in a dream fantasy land were just because NTL:Telewest bought Virgin Mobile, that Virgin Media will now be able to rival Sky. Not saying things wont improve, but Sky have invested heavily in making their own channels years and years ago along with rights for the big shows, pvr and HD. Virgin Media will not be able to take on Sky in the short term and it will take years of investment to get in the postion Sky are in now. And to be honest, losing the Sky channels, losing the Chelsea Prem Plus match and having to reset the STB everytime i want to watch VOD ( PACE ) and not been able to get things working on VOD ( V+ ) and also taking 4 attempts to get Top Gear to work on VOD ( PACE ) it really hasnt been a great start to Virgin Media. Sky aint perfect, but Virgin Media need to look closer towards home first to sort stuff out.

One thing to remember, Virgin Media does not have an unlimited amount of money that Virgin can offer. So just because Virgin is at the begining of Virgin Media's name does not mean they will suddenly have an 'unlimited amount of money available to them.

Re: When VM launch their own Sky One... What would you like to see on it?

To be honest, I'm quite certain there won't be a "Virgin One" - any new programming will be on Virgin Central which gives you the option of watching it whenever you want. It also has the added benefit of making it unique to Virgin Media.

Advertising? New series of new shows? New series of current shows? It would just be cheaper to get sky back and just keep doing with what they are with Virgin Central/VOD.

If anything it needs changing to IF Virgin Media decide to make their own channel/s

Yes it does but its not for people to discuss that they are getting Sky services or complaining about losing Sky channels - there are other threads that exist for this purpose - This thread isn't one of them.

Why don't VM just buy a few peak time viewing shows, stick them on Living and re-name it Virgin One.

Or VM could buy out an existing channel, re-name it and add program content.

the best idea would be to remarket living as the rival Sky One - you then would only need 3 or 4 hours of decent programming an evening they already have Grays Anatomy, CSI & Boston Legal so it wouldn't be hard to get some other decent shows

of course, sky now have a 2 year? contract to get these VM owned channels ( does their contract say what programs they get though ?).

would it be wise to improve this existing channel , or take the best content off these and produce a second new channel exclusive to VM cable and licence (a sub-set? of)that to freeview to remove the tosh gambling airtime.... with ANYTHING better.

the thing that strikes me in this thread and elsewere(from end users, and VM managment alike), is the lack of british innovative thinking in seeing just what IPTV really is...., its a vast move forward in interactivity and cost savings.

you take the VOD and bungle it up as people like it to be viewed, and add new options to that to show them how it can also be viewed in other ways( not the current crappy multi-button pressing back/ok/down etc beta front-end on-demand way please).

while tech is not a panacia as such , you cant do new innovative stuff without it, and given the current cheap and nasty stbs capabilitys, this will not happen to any great degree for a while yet, at least until both the head end and far more powerful STB's are put in place to then take advantage of the possabilitys at then no extra excessive costs.

but think of it this way, you ask for program x, y and z, and think its going to be delivered as its always been , but thats not the case, its potential can be far better than that old way for all concerned.

HD, SD, PIP, over lan, even to your browser and linkable in message boards to control your standard (powerful, some day...) VM STB (remember the VM STB uses limited html middleware to put up the GUI on the tv and control the box)and check out the PIP in a window as we post in this thread all become a possability if the basic tech is in place and the firmware in included.

why only supply the programs you already know and see elsewere, what about an ever changing supply of new and different programming that you can try for an episode or two and vote for it to be included in a generic tv channel, the more something gets votes the more gets supplyed.....

just one option:
advertising pays the bills, but again why not link these to the voting system, 'what do you want to buy today' type voting and that too gets linked into the main content on a rotation, the more an advert appears the more they pay.

just for the record , heroes, dresden files, primevil are all good new programs that do seem to bring something new to current viewing in the different channels they come from, so it might be nice to have them all in a single channel for convenience.

but...., how many more new programs are out there that we dont even know exists yet?, these new progams could find a very good home in VOD and become the next BIG hit, and VM could be the place to create this playgound were new tallent can collect, and become well known and watched.

its clear you dont need to go to the biggest and baddest studio's to get good programming, apparently there is a very big need to have a place were the smaller studio's and indys can get their new content on screen, why not VM...

welwynrose 04-03-2007 15:19

Re: When VM launch their own Sky One... What would you like to see on it?

there are loads of programming out there that never see the light of day in the UK or it takes months for us to see it - they need to forget about Lost/24 etc as they are losing viewers with each season & concentrate on some new programming - if they had got something like Heroes that would have been great but there are other great programs out there that would soon pull in the audience either for a new channel, Living or VOD

The reason why channels like Living, etc show repeat shows is because they can get them cheaper. A simplistic calculation of a new channel launch which this thread talks about shows why it will not happen. Getting new content for only 8 hours programming at say £100,000 per hour is £800K per day. Add staff costs and overheads lets say £1 million a day or over £350 million a year. VM do not have that money as Sky also does not. That is why Sky1 has so many repeats. I cannot see VM ever launching VM1 and talk of VM2 is laughable. That is why they have gone down the path of Virgin Central, providing a best choice at least cost solution. VM will never be able to buy first runs of top shows if the likes of Sky are prepared to pay £1 million per show. The £40 million saving has not even happened as it is a potential saving over the next 12 months.

A name change and a few more high focus programs just might work. The channel is up and going and VM1 does seem to be attractive to some people.

Interesting point, do you get more money by making the channel exclusive to cable for the extra viewers, or available on all channels for the extra potential advertising revenue?

Or start off exclusive and then go national?

Personally, I think you are right. The VOD seems the Unique Selling Point at the moment, specially the quotation on the VM site about watching programmes without the adverts.

I think TV catch up is free if you are on the XL package, and when you have the new Virgin Media electronic programme guide. Maybe someone can confirm that?

Did you not read your letter. TV choice section on the on demand is free for 3 months (but not all of it due to more errors), then you have to start paying the fees again. or upgrade your TV package, I was told(in another thread) that this is due to the delays in getting the new EPG working (for every one, not just the V+ users) and untill they fix the red button problems, you are missing even more content than you may Know, plus the lack of some, +1 and +2 channels and Movie channels and some sport channels, that they don't show in some areas for some reason, you're still getting half a service in some areas. Even after EX-Ntl and EX-Telewest merged, then the name change to virgin this still hasn't brought those extras YET, before there were Cable only channels that were not on sky, now its gonna be the other way around for a while.

Perhaps VM could commission Terry Pratchett's Guards Guards and look at other programs out there which might appeal rather than sticking with the same old stuff.. Stargate SG1 is finishing anyway so why not see what else is available

The amount of money they would have to invest into it to make it as big as Sky One is to much for Virgin Media, or at least i think it will be.

Not necessarely

As sky have removed their channels nothing stops VM from upping the cost to Sky on their channels Trouble, Trouble+1, Living TV, +1, 2, Challenge, etc etc

So as Flextech is owned by VM what stops them from putting on a version equivelent to Sky One,

Ok so it wont be the most recent episodes that sky put on, but as you can see already Virgin Central has obtained some programming that was shown on Sky 1

So all that is needed is to show these programmes on it.

Of cause the "Demand list" that this thread is making wont really happen and chances are it wont overnight.

Contracts need drafting up
Staff to power the channel
placing the channel on all headends so all can view
buget to maximum costs for sales on programmes

But a VM sky1 is a possibility that may not lie too distant in the future.
Just dont expect it next month lol

People should remember that Sky can be (and have been) beaten when bidding for programmes. Remember, they lost the first two series of Lost to Channel 4 and the only reason that they have 24 is because the BBC refused to pay as much as fox demanded for what it considered a minority programme. They were also beaten on Friends and (I believe) ER as well.

Sorry if this has already been answered in the thread - I can't be ärsed reading all the posts. So are VM actually doing their own version of Sky One?
