On Demand Variance

Is this list of the BBC HD content supposed to be showing on demand?

* Bleak House (Complete Series)
* Great Natural Wonder Of The World
* Hotel Heliconia
* Judge John Deed (Series2 Ep 1-4)
* Last NightOf The Proms 2003 (Ep 1 & 2)
* Polar Bears On Thin Ice
* Pyramid
* Space (Ep 1 - 3)
* Supervolcano (Ep 1 & 2)
* The Magic Flute (Parts 1 & 2)
* The Planets (Ep 1 - 8)
* Walking With Beasts (Ep 1 - 6)
* Weird Nature (Ep 1 - 6)
* Wild Weather Cold
* Wild Weather Heat
* Wild Weather Wet
* Wild Weather Wind

I am not able to see a quarter of this content on my box? Also I do not see a few of the films in HD that are listed on the filmflex movies web site. Is this just an area issue or a problem with my box?

I've not got

Hotel Heliconia
Deed
Proms
Polar Bears
Pyramid
Space
Supervolcano
Weird Nature

I have the rest (I assume 'The Planets' refers to the Blue Planet series, which I do have). I also have 5 HD movies available.

Yeah, those are exactly the ones I don't have either. Is there a difference maybe between ex Telewest and ex NTL, as I notice we are both exNTL?

Nope, don't have either of them.

Virgin should try to get this content across the board with all this Sky stuff going on!

Re: On Demand Variance

I'd noticed that the HD Filmflex Movies folder finally had more than 3 films in it. It looks like they're actually working hard to harmonise the platforms, but they're still having some issues. If you look in the More On Demand -> 4OD and look for the 'old' paid for episodes of Lost, you'll see there's a double entry for every one.

I'm being patient with them.

Same as me - Dont have Lost or CSI - Even though Im sure I have seen CSI advertised on Virgin Central

(I am in the Essex area)

Tod 07-03-2007 08:17

Re: On Demand Variance

They are advertising Spooks on Virgin Central also, but it is not there.

I have been told that we should all get the same content but the delay is due to Virgin having to increase the capacity on all the local VOD servers and then of course copy over all the content - which takes time.

Looking at Virgin Central content last night I noticed it has gone onto two pages now - so it is happening :)

And me. Now that HD footy is going soon, I'm eager for Virgin to give us ex-NTLers more HD VOD content.

Tod 23-04-2007 09:40

Re: On Demand Variance

Lots more content vanishing now, and not being replaced by anything. Good example of this is the BBC HD section, which now only has Bleak House and nothing else! Not very impressed I must say.

ShadowTD 23-04-2007 10:26

Re: On Demand Variance

I think this is in anticipation of some more headend upgrades. I looked last night and my BBC HD VOD listings had changed from 5 pages ov content listed vertically into the alphabetical 'horizontal' format used by other VOD sections where there's a lot of content. I now have all of the content listed in the OP.

Shame about only 3 HD movies though... :(

Re: On Demand Variance

We had three series of Spooks (Stockport) and now it's gone. And I'd started watching one of the series I had not seen. Assume it will come back.

Re: On Demand Variance

Does anyone still have Alias series 4 in entirety?

rtj70 23-04-2007 13:15

Re: On Demand Variance

"Does anyone still have Alias series 4 in entirety?"

Well we've only got series 4 episodes 5-10 on V+ box. On Samsung box (still on NTL EPG) then series 4 has only episodes 5 and 6. So across V+/V boxes there is a different at the same head-end. Having said that don't the two types of boxes currently use different head end servers for VoD?

Chris please explain what you mean about the HD footy going soon as i didn't think we had any:confused:

When i first subscribed i assumed all the Skys HD content was available to Virgin but when i questioned it on hear i was told we get none of the Sky HD so we have very little HD content at all :(

Never assume especially when the two parties concerned are business rivals. No doubt part of the stand off over Sky 1 etc it HD contentin reality.

At the moment, the BBC have been showing FA Cup games on BBC HD (and even that may not be around for much longer - its a trial channel and from what I've read, the trial may be ending in July).

BUT - a few weeks ago, ITV/Setanta Sports won the contract for FA Cup/England Home Internationals for the season beyond next.

And if ITV and Setanta don't have a HD channel up and running by then, that that bye-bye to the only HD Football currently available to VM customers.

Even if the BBC Trust gives approval for BBC HD to become a proper channel, there will be very little live football on the Beeb beyond next season. Sky & Setanta will have the Premiership; ITV & Setanta will have FA Cup/Home England games; ITV have Champions League (which can't be shown on the BBC due to adverts/sponsorship); Five have UEFA Cup.

The only live footy left for the Beeb will be major events like the World Cup and Euro Championships, and perhaps the Welsh home games along with the odd England away game (if the Beeb don't get outbid by Sky for them). Apart from that, the Beeb will have Premiership highlights (MoTM).

Thanks for the explanation Chris, so we're really only gonna be left with the On Demand.
However the footy tonight was not such a bad picture and the other channels are looking quite good to me:)

Is it worth complaining to OFCOM about the fact that the ITV/Setanta deal means the end of HD football for a lot of people?

Doubtful.

Not everyone who has a V+ has a HD Ready TV. IMO, the number of V+ owners who do enjoy HD content is probably not large enough for OFCOM to launch an investigation.

BTW, BBC HD Trial has been extended to November.

Makes you wish that VM won the footy rights to Near-live Premiership highlights on VOD - that content was won by BT Vision. Doing that on VM's VOD network (in HD??) would have been very nice. Ho-Hum.

Looks like Sky have nabbed home footy rights to NI home games:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/6598357.stm

....meaning that from next year, NO UK national footy team will be appearing on BBC/BBC HD for home internationals.

Re: On Demand Variance

Providers (Setanta Sky BBC ITV et al) should have to supply their HD feeds if thats what they do. If we subscibe to sky no matter what Provider we pay the same money so should have the same choices IMO

True, but also not everyone who watches BBC HD has a HD Ready TV either. I watch stuff on there partly because even with an SD CRT the picture still seems better, but mostly because some of the progs [Planet Earth & Superstorm] are in 5.1 on BBC HD.

That's good news. I may not have an HD TV yet, but as I said, HD can be of benefit even to those without 1.

Another month, still nothing

ShadowTD 05-06-2007 11:32

Re: On Demand Variance

Yep.

I've had V+ since Feb and I must admit, I'm beginning to lose patience. It's now June and I refuse to believe it takes 4 months to finish off a project (harmonisation of the two networks) that was supposedly started in late 2006. It is simply a case of insufficient money being spent on the network itself (and the billing systems).

Bit of a shambles if you ask me. But I'm getting an awful lot for my money - at least £10pcm cheaper than Sky could offer me similar services, and that's without taking HD (what there is of it) into account!

I don't want to pay less than those on the non-NTL network; I'm happy to pay the same - but please deliver the same amount of content!

There are 19 HD films listed at FilmFlex. I currently get just 3, and, what's worse, they've been the same for weeks. I'm paying for a service which is 85% unavailable.

This all needs sorting out soon...

I'm agrivated by the problems people are having here, and although I don't watch most of these programs, I'd like to have the option.

I've just made a post about the Variance of The Episodes on VoD.

But Id like everyone to note the Days Left thing for Certain Series and that usually means that after that, they are removed.

Although, I have noticed that 8 Out of 10 Cats has RE-appeared after running out of time.

Not on exNTL it doesn't, they get removed well before the days left expire!

Really?

I'm ex-ntl: and havent noticed they are removed early...

Another thing to be added to the long list of stuff to be fixed.

Apparently it is because there is not enough space on the servers in the exNTL area, so they shuffle content around to try to get new stuff on.

ShadowTD 06-06-2007 08:41

Re: On Demand Variance

It's a simple answer - upgrade the damn things!

I *understand* that Telewest appear to have been out in front wrt VOD. I *understand* that Ntl have been playing catchup. But I do NOT *understand* why it isn't sorted yet - it's simply cheapskatedness (woo - new word!) on the groups part to cut corners on what is supposed to be their defining service.

But they win - there's no point in complaining. I wonder if anyone in the BY support newsgroup can get some kind of schedule as to what is happening?

Re: On Demand Variance

I spoke to someone in CS and he said that the V+ boxes needed a software update as they "can not cope with all the features and VOD". This update would be done end July.

He also told me that no one can get all the HD movies listed on Filmflex. When I asked why they have them listed I was told that "People with Virgin Freeview boxes can get them"? I challenged this as there is no HD on freeview, but the guy said that is what he was told and did not know first hand.

Why are people at VM told to lie to customers? This is the best way possible to make customers leave.

Can anyone confirm if they can get all the HD movies on VOD - see if that was a lie also?

JethroUK 22-06-2007 16:52

Re: On Demand Variance

I haven't even got the Bond movies (in H/D anyway)

Also the bit about V+ not coping with VOD is definately a lie - to 'cope' with VOD you just need a tuner
