Poor picture quality

Hi
Over the last few days the picture quality on sky channels as been very poor,i have a v+hd box and a samsung box in the bedroom and on both boxes the picture is not very good i.e. colours look bland and there seems to be a bit of ghosting. On the v+box all the other channels are great and look fantastic, but the sky channels look dull in colour.

Thanks 54xhg.

How did you connect your boxes to the TV...? have you called V+ care line already? I supposed that all other channels are OK? is it?

Hi,
The v+hd box is connected by hdmi cable, the samsung box is connected by scart. All the other channels i.e. BBC1 ,ITV,are perfect and the BBC HD channel is superb,it's just the sky channels, they have been like it since Monday.

Re: Poor picture quality

I would say mine had slightly less colour when connecting via HDMI/DVI, so i turned the colour back up a bit!

I'm having the same problems as 54xhg. All the channels except Sky are good, Sky channels are poor. They are grainy, stuttery and somtimes you see a lot of squares.

What channels are you classing as Sky channels?
MTV channels for example?

I class everything apart from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 ect ....... BBC HD is very clear.

Hi
Thank god somebody else has noticed this i thought i was going mad,if anybody is watching the rugby league on skysports when they are in the studio, behind eddie hemmings left shoulder you can see square blocks and and also on some crowd shots as well. The sky movie channels seem very dull in colour, but as i have said before all other channels are perfect.

Thanks 54xhg

Not the best. On live feeds the picture can be very poor. Ghosting around players, the picture sort of stuttering and also sometimes a blocky picture as if the bitrate has been turned down

54xhg 02-03-2007 21:49

Re: Poor picture quality

I were thinking it looked like the bitrate had been turned down,do you think sky are sending a crap feed due to the fallout with virgin.

Funny you should say that..... We now have the old Pace box in the kitchen and the picture with that box in the living room was very good, even on football. I connected the Pace box to the plasma in the living room (how we used to have it) and the picture wasn't as good as the new V+ box, so something is going on.

I've noticed it on The Disney Channel - it was awful... pixel city.

Creative 03-03-2007 09:31

Re: Poor picture quality

Disney Channels, Sky Sports, and Sky Movies are all encoded by Virgin themselves. Where are you all located?

I'm in Leeds.

Re: Poor picture quality

Soccer AM on Sky Sports 1 has been very poor this morning in terms of PQ. Very pixellated.

I'm in Glasgow area.

SlackDad 03-03-2007 13:12

Re: Poor picture quality

Watching the Liverpool Man Utd game on SS1 the picture certainly appears more pixellated and an occasional 'stutter' every so often. (Just to clarify by stutter I mean that the picture seems to jump forward by a fraction of a second)

Re: Poor picture quality

I also noticed how poor Soccer am PQ was today and I think it must be a national thing because I could not be further from Glasgow on the South Coast. Must admit Liverpool v Mau U seems better.

SlackDad 03-03-2007 13:48

Re: Poor picture quality

Also noticed that if I go into 'delay TV' the stuttering stops. Very strange.

Probably because the content is coming from the buffer on your V+ and not streamed 'live'. Gives it a chance to keep the frames in sync.

Manchester - the live match at lunchtime was awful. Looked like a streaming feed from the Web :-(

I'm from Warrington and mine was just as bad.

Re: Poor picture quality

Continuing through Soccer Saturday with pixellating and ghosting. Giving me a headache. Had to switch to BBC Interactive results service.

Whys that Sweepster? What did you tell them / what did they say?

I would have phoned up but thought it must be a national thing and not a box fault. As an aside - Nickelodeon was terrible today and I was cursing the V+ box / Virgin when I swapped over to Sky and found out it wasn't much better on there.

I told them that my picture was very poor, blocky and jumping. Even if it is a national thing Virgin have to know. My old picture off a pace box was very good, so it's the signal as far as I'm concerned. It has got a bit better this evening but I've recorded the United game which was fantastic apart from the picture.... to show him.

Continuing today as well. Goals on Sunday like a poor internet stream. Pity as USA (Marcus Hannehman) is on.

Re: Poor picture quality

Kids watching Disney - still as bad. All of the faces look Kryten from Red Dwarf due to the pixalisation :td:

Not good and not keeping it if that's the quality.

Andrex 04-03-2007 16:57

Re: Poor picture quality

All should report it to Virgin faults and make sure they flag it as poor picture quality. It'll be some kind of national fault which hasn't been noticed.

Re: Poor picture quality

I'll be ringing them tomorrow - I hope everyone else does so that something might be done about it.

Checked on my old Samsung - def. better quality for some reason.

spankysmagicpian 06-03-2007 10:13

Re: Poor picture quality

Phoned them up and an engineer is coming out on Monday evening. They said they have no reports of poor picture quality. So to recap (in case anyone else may have the same problem and would like to agree with me) - V+ box / ex NTL Manchester.

Sky Sports 1 - terrible definition around the players at the weekend.

Nickelodeon and Disney Channel - awful pixelisation, looks like a bad web feed.

BBC1 ITV UKTV etc channels all fine.

Samsung looks ok but that's on a smaller 4:3 28" as opposed to the 32" WS CRT via scart.
