Solent Installations- Important Information
This message is for Blueview and Crooky and anyone else in the Solent region who has had a V+HD Box installed
I had my V+ box installed on Friday :) - it seems to be working fine but I have noticed that there is a small turquoise light flashing on and off on the front of the box. This is the online light and it SHOULD NOT be flashing it should be on constantly (I started a thread on the subject and was told that if it is flashing then it means I have a faulty return path!). I phoned faults yesterday hoping there was an easy solution and was told that no it should not be flashing and that this is probably why I can't get VOD. Then he said I would have to have an engineer out AND EVEN WORSE HE WOULD PROBABLY NEED TO DO A BOX SWAP. Now having spent all weekend recording stuff this was not good news. So check that your online light isn't flashing and if it is you need to phone faults. In the meantime don't record too much in case they replace your box and you lose the lot. So I now have engineer coming out on Wednesday which means another afternoon off work ....... |

He checked the signal, said it wasn't strong enough for the V+ box, went across the road to the main box, returned and continued setting it up. The first thing I noticed when he'd gone was no VOD. The first thing my wife noticed was the flashing green light. 'Tis normal, said I, according to the engineer! Still no VOD, so phoned 151 quoting 1092 (as it said on screen) when I called. "Give it 24 hours for initialisation" was the response and, on checking the forums I discovered that others had to wait several hours. So, now, 6 hours after installation, I phoned 151 again mentioning no VOD still with a 1092 quote. "Is there a flashing green light?" was the response. Yes "That means that there is not a strong enough signal for VOD. I'll have to pass this on to the second tier of response** who will contact you by phone in the next 3 to 5 days. There was no mention of an engineer coming and it sounded as though it could be sorted by phone." If she was correct, then your box shouldn't need to be changed. That's the good news. but the bad news is we'll have to wait, yet again, for a normal service. ** Could this be the 'second line' mentioned by you yesterday? |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Thanks for this info blueview its great that you've got your box installed and I hope its all working okay (apart from the VOD)- I've been playing with mine all weekend and think its great.
If you've got a flashing light too this suggests that its a region problem rather than a individual box problem. I think I'll call faults again, the guy I spoke to on Sunday didn't seem to have a clue. I probably don't need an engineer at all. I also though it might be a good idea to use this thread for general Solent Region info ie faults, queries etc rather than the pvr release date threads. I'm pretty sure you suggested this awhile back and it seems like agood idea to me. There is another thread on the flashing online light here http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/10...-supposed.html |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
The flashing light is a warning for no return path, So you will not get any VOD,
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Just had a call from Darren in Faults - now that's a quick response for Virgin Media !!
It seems the interactive content was not added to the box when it was installed. He has now done this. All I have to do is take out the plug, reboot and all should be fine. I am now going to to this. I'll let you know the outcome. ---------- Post added at 16:36 ---------- Previous post was at 16:12 ---------- Just did 2 reboots. Still flashing light. Still no VOD. So back to 151 and the 1092 fault. Was told it could take another couple of hours before the interactive content appears. So I'll check later this evening. |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Thanks Blueview
Will phone faults when I get home and report back |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
I've been reading this forum with interest as I also has a V+ box installed on Friday afternoon. The blue online light was flashing from the start but the Engineer said it would turn solid in approx 2 hours. I believed him....!
24hrs later still flashing so called faults. Advised by CS rep that VOD was not supported on the V+ boxes. Couldn't be bothered to argue at the time so I called back again today. This time they suggested the box was faulty (as the light was flashing) so they will besending an Engineer out on Thursday. Somehow I don't think this will do much good as from the sound of it there were a lot of duff boxes fitted on Friday!! Must be a local or network issue? |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Quote:
Welcome to the forum Maddad, nice to hear from more people in the solent region. :D This is looking very much like a regional problem rather than problems with individual boxes. Therefore there seems little point in an engineer coming out - he'll probably do a box swap in desperation which won't fix the problem and will mean you'll lose any programmes on your hard drive. I have an engineer booked for wednesday but I'm going to phone faults again as I don't want to take an afternoon off work for nothing especially after what Blueview has said. So check back again later and see how I get on and also whether blueview gets his VOD working (I'm making this sound like a soap) |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
So, in summary:
All recorded Solent boxes, on this forum, are showing a flashing blue light. All were installed in the past few days. All have no VOD content. Reasons given by Faults: 1. Not set up for interactive content - easy to resolve. 2. Too weak a signal which would therefore involve Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Portsmouth - might take time to resolve. 3. Every box was faulty - highly unusual. It certainly sounds as though 2 is the likely reason. If my box does not get VOD by late tonight then it probably is a signal or network problem. Who will be the first in the Solent region to get VOD? Let us know !! |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Thank you ecw199.
Other than the VOD issue I am very pleased with the box. The picture quality is great and so far the other problems such as the remote control delay haven't been too bad - I was expecting worse! The VOD is annoying however - sad as it may seem I've actually covered up the flashing light with tape as it was bugging me so much!!! I'm tempted to let the Engineer come out as I'm here anyway and at least it might enable the problem to be escalated as phoning Customer services is no use if they don't know the answer. |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
just a pointer guys, when my v+ was installed the engineer had 2 install a new splitter, i know on other forums that people that didnt have a new 1 done, their v+ dont work, just a thought though as to may what be wrong with ur v+

Well I phoned faults and basically didn't get very far (in fact got the feeling I knew far more than he did). Anyway I told him the problem pointed out the fact that other people in my area were having the same problem and was there any point having an engineer out if it was a region wide issue. He checked his computer and said that it WASN'T a regional problem and that it might be a problem with the settings on my box. He did say that the reason the light was flashing was a lack of signal strength, so at least that seems to tally with what Blueview was told. He said I definately need an engineer out. In the end because I wasn't getting anywhere I decided to keep my appointment for Wednesday pm (my mum has agreed to wait in so I don't have to have a day of work). I'm pretty sure that the engineer is going to turn up and say there is nothing he can do and that its a network issue. It would be great to know if there is anyone in the solent region who has VOD and whos light ISN'T flashing on and off! Also if you are in the solent region and your online light is flashing please report it to faults because the guy said that it is only designated as a regional network issue if they recieve enough complaints. Really feel like I'm doing all the work here, aren't they suppose to tell us when theres a problem not the other way around  |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
I live in North End, Portsmouth and had my box installed Friday afternoon. It also has a flashing blue light and no VOD. In addition, it can't remember TV settings and won't allow me to change to HDTV. The Engineer comes out today.
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Hi all,
my return path is flashing still. The signal strength for a return path is the return strength, as its name suggests. The installation engineer and his supervisor checked the signal strengths and the diagnostics says that all signals are locked. There is another thread on here that states we will be getting a new software download this month. Perhaps this is a software issue in the region that no-one has picked up on yet. Remember, we were delayed by software problems for our roll-oout initially. |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Got up early - like Elmtree and crooky........light still flashing at 6am.
Rebooted again ........still flashing. My engineer tweaked the signal strength up and the interactive was added yesterday afternoon, so it seems to be a local Solent issue. Nobody on here yet has said they have VOD in Solent. Once Elmtree's engineer has visited him today, perhaps we'll know more. Elmtree - could you show him this thread if he can't resolve it? Might move things along quicker !! |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Just reported to 151 the fact that nothing has changed.
Explained that many others had same problem. They told me I was the only one today with the problem !! Engineer arranged for Thursday morning. Devil's advocate position........................................ Are we the only 6 out of, say 500 installs, with the problem ? Hence the reason we write in to this forum, whilst others aren't interested as they're OK !! Just clutching at straws now ! |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information

Will be interesting to see what elmtree's engineer says? How many complaints do Virgin need to recognise a problem? Just to reiterate If your in the Solent region and your light is flashing - COMPLAIN If its not flashing - PLEASE POST AND LET US KNOW |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
[QUOTE=ecw199;34226859]You could be right Blueview. But it seems to me that we were all posting on this forum before we got are V+ boxes and it seems a big coincidence that we all have exactly the same problem now - its not as if we've started using this forum because are light is flashing on and off.
I thought that as well a few minutes after I posted. As a random sample, 5 of the 6 of us posted weeks before we got the boxes. It was mainly to do with the fact our instals were due or cancelled. Now, after installation, all of us are having the same VOD/flashing light problem. So the conclusion (of a small sample, agreed) is that the problem is 100% a Solent problem because the other factors involve different towns, different engineers, different instal days and different boxes (unless it's a batch of boxes fault?) |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
im having a V+ box installed here this afternoon i will let you know the outcome.
For some reason Virgin decided to send 2 engineers, today one to install a SACM, other to install a box.. just had the cable modem installed, gotta wait for the V+ box. |

Hello Tijer Be great if you can let us know what happens and what your engineer says to explain it. (I suspect you'll know more about it than he does) Don't let him fob you of with 'it will stop flashing within a few hours once the interactive content comes online' because you can be fairly confident that it won't |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Yeah well when i signed up for the VIP pack i was telling the telephone operator about it and what it gave :P
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Welcome to this thread, Tijer,
We await both Elmtree and your reactions to this afternoon's engineers visits. Hopefully they can sort out the light/VOD problem. If so, what do the rest of us need to do? If not, what is their diagnosis and treatment? |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
The good news :)
Had a v+ installation today, just checked and the online light is on solidly. The bad news :( I have no VOD. Its been this way for a week now (existing box as well) as the samsung wouldn't play VOD. All that happens is a black screen comes up and you can FF/RW, see the time code but not actually see or hear anything on screen... So I can confirm that there is a solid online light... |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Odd, Alexcutts. My V+ has no VOD but my transferred Samsung still does have VOD.
So at least I have the ability to watch VOD and also the new 119 channel. Tijer and Elmtree - any news yet? |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
I didn't see your message BlueView.
The engineer came, tried everything including changing boxes but said everything was OK his end, it must be the configuration. I've just phoned faults again and they say the problem isn't with them and therefore the problem is being routed to 2nd line. I'm now promised a call within 24-48 hrs to resolve. I'm not confident. |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
couldnt find the thread so i posted in the other one.
Seems tho from looking at digitalspy that there seems to be a standard problem with new v+ installs... ---------- Post added at 17:43 ---------- Previous post was at 17:40 ---------- link to the thread i replied on http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/11...t-not-vod.html |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Screw it...
Anyone with a V+ box in Solent or elsewhere who can't get a lock PM me the MAC or Serial number (SA and a bunch of letters) and I'll check if it's what I think it is. |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
if anyone does that could they let me know the outcome....
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
I've just PM'd my details to BBKing so I hope this helps as there doesn't seem to be anybody getting a sensible answer from the engineers or Customer Services at the moment.
Somebody in Virgin must know how to resolve this! |

Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Just been looking on Digital Spy again, appears people still having this issue with the online light flashing. Someone posted there that one tech said it was a national fault? if it was surely everyone would know this... So i dont think its limited to the Solent area
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
If it's what I think it is it's neither regional nor a fault...
Thanks for the two serials dropped over, they're being investigated. |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Just noticed in the technical stuff settings menu that return power is set as N/A would this have any affect regarding the flashing online light? And also to clarify V+ stuff is working, just recorded battlestar galactica!
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Anyone have any news? Going to be calling virgin at 8am (or just after to see if they can sort it)
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Hi is there a flashing light on your samsung box .Because in this area the samsungs and v+ use the same freq so if the v box light is flashing the samsung would do the same if the reverse path went :tu: Good luck
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Ok phoned faults, who tried to put interactive on the account, and couldnt, so put me through to customer services, who tried to put interactive on the account so couldnt, who transferred me back to fault, who managed to put interactive on the account but the "online" light was still flashing, was told to try VOD and Interactive, both of which gave me a 1092 error, after that the box pretty much froze (due to the remote issues), was passed on to second line faults, who will be contacting me within 48 hours. I did however read somewhere that not having interactive on your account would be the cause of the VOD not working somewhere on this forum. I guess the V+ box is too new in ex-ntl areas for them to always get it right. Will keep you informed of the outcome, and whether 2nd line faults do actually contact me!

I've just PM'd my box serial number to BBKIng as well. I would imagine the more numbers he receives then the quicker the problem could be diagnosed and resolved. ecw199 - Is it today your mother welcomes the faults engineer? |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Im beginning to think that we have been unlucky with our boxes being entered on the system incorrectly. When you had your V+ installed did you keep another STB and have it relocated. I already had 2 STB's, but they moved the one which was downstairs up into the bedroom, and removed the STB from the bedroom, im wondering if they are setting the 'interactive' bit on the right box? Could be possible they they arent?
BTW V+ box switched on, guess it was the remote control lag (as faults were getting me to do quite a bit) |

Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
One thing i did notice on the phone whilst looking at the technical stuff menu,
return power is N/A - im guessing that could have an affect on the lack of VOD content? |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
1092 is a return path fault only occuring on V+.
It didn't happen on tvdrive as that ran a different firmware, it's the same as the old 1050. |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Ok 2nd line faults just called me back, told me to switch off all my boxes at the wall, which i did, told me to leave them off for 5 minutes, switched back on same problem... V+ box is still flashing online light....
He assured me they were fixed :( |

Same problem with the flashing lights for me. have PM'd numbers to BBKing. Got engineer coming out this afternoon as well so will update later.
I wonder if I will need to give the engineers dog water like last time, maybe I should have got some dog food in for it. :) Stu |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
After an hour on the phone with faults they found my account wasnt set up right so he went and got it all sorted, booted up v+ box same problem.

Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
wanna hear something else amusing went upstairs checked my samsung box and lo and behold NO CHANNELS - Smartcard is invalid, so just phoned faults for the 4th time today, to be told i will be called back in 20 minutes to see if i have my channels back. Now im starting to wornder if they have the correct smart card info for my V+ box, and that that may be why its not working as it should be.
Hehe, fun day im having here |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
OK. I see a pattern emerging here.
I have had my V+ box installed this morning. I have no VOD and no V+. My online light is flashing. I live in Gosport. My old Samsung box does not have all the channels I have subscribed to. Sound familiar?????? I have called 151 twice already and spoken to four different people. Each one seemed to offer a remedy that would solve the problem ranging from 2 minutes to 2 hours. I can only come to the conclusion that these people know absolutely nothing about the services they are providing. I even tried to explain that the online light is flashing because it can't sync with the equipment at the other end. AAAAAAAAAAaaarrrrrrggghhhh! |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
We have 3 different threads on the forum covering the same thing can someone get them alltogether.Might help in clearing it up.
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Might have been a good idea to link to the other threads so that we can see whats in them
|
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
My samsung fixed now... V+ still flashing online light.... Person i spoke to on the phone said that everything is set up as it should be, i proved it wasnt when my samsung lost all its chanels and its smart card pairing... The person on the phone said he wasnt too sure why it wasnt working but said that it was due to the V+ not being able to communicate with the virgin servers, which is what is needed for VOD (i knew this). As i said earlier been passed on to second line faults again. I will let you know the outcome of this. There does seem to be a trend with NEWLY installed V+ boxes having this exact same issue!

Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
Just in case anyone wants to check out the diagnostic pages on the box....
unplug the power cable, hold the up and down buttons down and plug the cable back in. keep the buttons pressed until the box has fully powered up. You should now see the diagnostic screens (12 of them) Use the left/right buttons to scroll through the pages. I don't understand most of it but maybe some else could shed some light on them? |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
OK , I now have all the channels and VOD on my samsung box but still nothing on the V+ box.
Might be worth checking what software version everyone has. mine is 11.1.8_ukcable |
Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
I had channels on my V+ box while the engineers were still here yesterday and they gave me a quick demo of the functions, there is however sometimes where channels can take up to 24 hours to fully appear.

Just to confirm that my box is working at 90% too with "only" the VOD and the interactive services missing. I've got a Engineer booked for tommorow so I will let everybody know the outcome. Re: Solent Installations- Important Information
yes i can. To get that working you need to get the V+ service added to your account. Supposedly to get VoD/Red Button working you need to get interactive added to your accounts as V+ work different than normal STB's. But as i said in previous messages, that didnt solve anything for me :(
