Re: SKY VS Virgin Media

Apparently Sky can't do this... They have to allow NTL to re-broadcast Sky channels for broadcasting regulations. However, its a bit ambiguous...

From CF news article:

Quote:

However, Sky cannot just pull its channels from ntl:Telewest, it has to make its channels available to cable companies under broadcasting regulations. But according to the speculation, if Sky does not get what it wants from negotiations, Sky channels are under threat from being revoked from the cable tv network.

They might not be able to refuse the channels, but what's to stop them offering them at a ridiculous rate knowing that Virgin Media would then not take them?

that would still be seen as anti-competitive, same thing with BT and BT wholesale, BT wholesale afaik cant sell to BT at different rates to what they charge other ISPs.

Sky One was one of the reasons for getting subscription TV way back in the analogue Diamond Cable days. There is still too much good stuff on Sky One to go without it.

Not that I realistically think Sky will pull it's channels off Virgin.

Yeh, a good point.

I think its all wind on Sky's part, just upping the anti really. I voted to stay with Virgin, I've been a customer since 97, and they have rarely put a foot wrong with me.

I'd miss Sky 1 a little if they oulled it, but given that about only 20% of their daily offering are not repeats, I have to ask if I would miss it that much.

Zee 06-02-2007 17:43

Re: SKY VS Virgin Media

Sky are not, and never were even thinking of removing their channels from ntl, Telewest & Virgin Media. This was just a publicity stunt to try and make some people leave an d join sky and to get Sky's name back into the news, since Virgin Media is all over the news at the moment, lots of people are talking about it.

Anyway, i'll be keeping my internet with Virgin Media and i'll be keeping my TV with Sky, for now anyway....

...unless Virgin Media offer something really good.

Re: SKY VS Virgin Media

I have no idea about the rights or wrongs of Sky pulling the the plug. Sky needs the money from cable companies; viewers may leave Virgin Media's television service but Sky is not necessarily the alternative supplier. Many would stick with Virgin Media for their telephone and broadband services and would either opt for Freeview or the their analogue service, soon to be digital tv. I object to the idea of paying BT for a telephone line rental and paying another company for the calls. I have got so used to having one bill for telephone, broadband and digital tv the same as I have got used to paying one bill for gas and electricity. Let's wait and see.

Can't get Virgin Media, stupid idea to run cables everywhere in my opinion. Sky automatically wins my vote just because they service a wider area, and my area for that matter.

Until Virgin Media can think of a better idea to get more customers, they cannot support as many customers as Sky.

Of course it doesn't make your opinion invalid. But it does make your vote invalid. The poll is about leaving or staying. If you arn't with NTL you can't leave or stay. That's like giving 100 Sky Customers this Poll saying now vote, then saying 100% of people will leave NTL.

Of course no one will stop you from making a vote on here, but that just means the figures even though are in NTLs favour on this vote, in reality are even more strongly in NTLs favour.

I am quite capable of putting myself in the position that is posed in the poll.

Many surveys ask you questions about hypothetical situations - I see this no differently. If I was in the position of having Ntl and being happy, then Sky pulled their channels I'd switch. No different to if I was currently was in the position.

You wouldn't get asked about a hypothetical poll in this situation. And if you were asked by a surveyor, if you said you you were currently with Sky, they wouldn't carry on asking you questions.

I can't argue with you about whether you can or can't, you quite obviously can, the figures just won't show a true representation of the people who will be leaving (if such a small poll could be seen as being representitive).

Sky ought to worry though, if they remove Sky channels from NTL, i'm going to leave Sky and sign up with NTL ;)

In very windy weather like a few weeks ago, or in snow it does affect it occasionally.

I'm with Sky now, but hate Murdoch and all he stands for, so if I had a choice I'd go with Virgin*. I like Richard Branson.

You're never going to get that sort of info from a poll on here - people that come here have either been ****ed off by Ntl or love them (to the point they spend their time posting "1 day till they become Virgin - ohh I'm going to wet myself I'm so excited."  )

If my voting in the poll offends you that much ask a mod to remove it. It's only an internet discussion after all. :dozey:

As for a surveys - I've been asked about brands changing their image or altering themselves in some way when I never buy the product - that's the idea of surveys/polls - to get peoples opinions.

Your voting in the poll doesn't offend me and i think you saying that is a bit childish, i was only stating that my own personal opinion is people who are with Sky and not NTL, who vote, distort the poll.

I'm not telling anyone they can't vote.

As for getting excited by it, those who want to get excited by it are more than welcome, i don't see why you have to insult them.

I'm personally interested by all progressions in technology, services, gaming and anything of the such, and i don't think it's sad to be interested.

I can cope with people being enthusiastic and I am genuinely interested in the outcome of this re-brand - but it's rather hard to keep up with the thread when there is a core group of people that post the same thing every day. That's not excitement that's just plain sillyness and detracts from what other posters are trying to say. It's not great to have to wade through the rubbish to get to the interesting posts.:disturbd:

Well seeing as the poll doesn't actually have a question to it we'll never know what the point of it was. Personally with a statement like "SKY VS Virgin Media" I was assuming* it was a light hearted look at what people would do if they were in the position of having Ntl and then having to decide "SKY VS Virgin Media" to keep the channels they want.:erm:

Perhaps I should have known it was a serious poll for only those that currently have Ntl - how I should have known this is beyond me at the moment but I'm sure my feeble brain will catch on at some point. :(

No matter how many you get to vote in this poll you'll never get a representative result - like I said up there:

"You're never going to get that sort of info from a poll on here - people that come here have either been annoyed by Ntl or love them"

Suck eggs - no, have a reasoned debate - well I try to.:disturbd:

Sky gets better deal for Flextech channels

Info from The Airwaves

On the day Virgin Media launches it has emerged that Sky has hammered down the amount it pays for the Flextech channels as relations between the two continue to deteriorate.

It is understood that Flextech will only get around 10p/Sky subscriber under the new deal instead of the current 40p/subscriber resulting in Flextech loosing more than £25 million per year in revenue.

According to broadcastnow.co.uk, Sky said it was only prepared to pay for Living TV and Flexztech is understood to be considering its options which could include Trouble and Bravo being rolled into its free-to-air FTN channel on satellite but is unlikely to merge Challenge due to the money Flextech gets from interactive streams.

Negotiations between the two continue over the basic Sky channels with Sky threatining to pull its channels off cable if a deal cannot be agreed. However, Virgin has said that it wants a better deal for the premium Sky channels Sky Sports and Sky Movies saying that it overcharges customers for these services. Cable would manage without Sky Movies due to it offering hundereds of films on-demand but Sky Sports is a different proposition.

Sky's top shows to go terrestrial
Sky is to make some of its most popular programmes, movies and sports available on digital terrestrial television.

The four channels on the new service will offer a range of shows for a monthly subscription from this summer.

Viewers will receive them through a normal TV aerial, with a new set-top box, rather than a satellite dish.

Sky Three, Sky News and Sky Sports News will disappear from digital terrestrial to make way. Media regulator Ofcom must approve the plans before they go ahead.

i emailed sky the other day calling them a pack of greedy babies .............here`s their reply.

Thanks for taking the time to contact us about this.

I want to reassure you that our goal is that Sky One, Sky News and Sky's
other basic channels will continue to be available to Virgin Media
customers. In fact, we hope that Virgin Media will choose to carry some
additional Sky channels such as Artsworld and Sky Three in the future as
well.

At the moment, we're working towards a new agreement that will keep these
channels on air. We want to avoid any disruption but, ultimately, it is
Virgin Media's choice whether to continue to offer our channels.

We know that many cable TV customers enjoy watching Sky basic channels. We
appreciate their loyalty as viewers and we think it's right that they should
be informed about the situation. That's why we have been broadcasting some
information on our channels.

In fairness, we do not know what Sky are asking Virgin to pay. Bearing in mind the fact that Sky have recently paid hundreds of millions to stop NTL buying into ITV, is it not possible that Sky are trying to negotiate prices that would make Virgin uncompetitive?

Isn't that how the free market economy works? Companies slog it out to make a profit and the consumer wind (supposedly).

I honestly think people on here do have doubled standards some times - they whine about discounts and haggling but then think Sky are the devil for having the gaul to charge what they like for their products. :disturbd:

I'm with Virgin Media for the long haul, I've been a customer since it was Cable & Wireless & losing a couple of channels that I hardly ever watch isn't enough to make me quit, hell we've had so many channel changes over the years I don't even know if any of the ones I had with C&W are still showing.

Sky are removing ALL their channels from Virgin Media (Sky Sports, Sky Movies, Sky One etc.) in summer 2007 so it looks like Sky will win the battle unless Virgin Media buy the World Cup Footie.

Plus Sky are putting Sky One, Sky Two, Sky Sports 1 and Sky Movies 1 ON Freeview so many people will quit Virgin Media, and join Freeview or Sky. (When Sky win the battle, they will remove all those channels from Freeview) This does mean that Sky's cost will go down about £5 and when Sky win the battle, they are planning to move their cost's down £10, meaning that Six Entertainment Mixes without Sports or Movies, will cost £11:D , and that will also win the battle against Talk Talk and BT, becuase phone is free and broadband mid pack costs £5, so altogether it will cost £16.:D

Cable won't loose Sky Movies and Sky Sports as they are covered by the rate card and Sky would have to answer to the Office of Fair Trading.

Aren't you assuming that every single Virgin subscriber actually wants the sports channels, I'm not alone in not being interested in the sports channels, but I still won't leave Virgin because of losing a few unimportant channels.

The following is from Brand Republic

Sky urges Virgin Media to sign new deal.

BSkyB has challenged Virgin Media to sign a new deal to continue to carry its basic portfolio of channels across the cable network, which 'reflects the proposed new terms and considerable value of its basic channels'.

Sky said that without a new agreement, it is possible that Sky's basic channels could cease to be available to Virgin Media customers, which would be a major blow to the newly rebranded rival. The broadcaster has now begun to broadcast messages across its channels to urge cable viewers to encourage Virgin Media to reach a new agreement. Sky confirmed that "discussions are continuing between Sky and Virgin Media over a new agreement for distribution of Sky's basic channel portfolio to cable TV viewers". The broadcaster says it wants its channels to be available to cable television viewers and is offering more value to Virgin Media than ever before."

I am a Sky+ customer currently and I would LOVE to move to V+. Unfortunately I am planning to relocate in the next few months so it would make no sense to do so.

Sky disgusts me. I can't think of why anyone would feel any loyalty to that dishonest rabble of a company. The management are scared of Virgin. They are scared of Branson. They can feel that people trust Virgin 500x more than they trust Sky, and they damn well should. As an NTL customer for the last 5 years, I can see and feel the vast improvement in service and offering that has occurred in the last two quarters.

When Branson proved the dirty tricks of BA, he gave the compensation that BA paid out as a bonus to the Virgin Atlantic employees.

I wish Virgin Media all the success, and hope that they don't lose sight of their fundamentals of putting their employees first thus their employees putting the customers first.

Your area cannot recieve Sky? Every area is theoretically capable of recieving sky. You only need a clear line of sight to the satellite.

The only reasons I can think of that you can't recieve sky are that there is some sort of physical obstruction to the signal (which can be a tree, or building in the line of sight) or your Landlord/Local Council/Resident's association does not allow the installation of dishes.

You do realise there are people who don't pay for the 101 extra Sky movie/sport/news channels & really don't care whether they vanish from the list? Sky can take every single one of their channels off the VirgiNTL list & it won't make the least difference to me, I'll still have more channels than I can easily watch in the 24hrs that make up any day. When I see the Virgin logo I know there's at least one person associated with the company that can be trusted 100%, that is something I can never say about Sky. If you can name a single Sky channel that I might actually miss then I'd be very surprised. But then I know the channels won't be missing if I ever choose to look at them because Sky know they can't afford to turn their backs on the cable providers.

Re: SKY VS Virgin Media

I am glad this post has come up and pleased to see the result of the poll is that the majority of people would stay with VM if Sky pulled the channels.

I do watch and enjoy Lost and would miss it, but I used to be a Sky customer and was treated very badly, so badly they have £12 of my money I just can't be bothered to go back and get.

I don't appreciate the tactics Sky have employed to try and get us to vote with Sky and in a way I wish they woud pull the channels and for VM, and of course us the customers, to stand firm.

VM is not going to be wondferul overnight, they may never be but at least they are trying, Sky are not trying or perhaps thats the point they are trying in the desperate sense! I hope VM have something to turn it back to Sky but the most powerful weapon they have is us, customers who stay.

Virgin Media for me i think. I live in N.Ireland so i get the RTE channel on cable and they run all the same stuff as sky like "LOST"

The say thing about this is that SKY need V/M and V/M need Sky. So i dont understand why they both dont work along side each other to give us a better service all round.

I used to have sky movies and sports..My husband never watched the sports at home preferring to go to his local to watch it all with his mates..Still does.As for sky movies..well you got two premieres per month and there after you could watch it over and over and over for years. The same films came up that I could watch on cable channels for far less (eventually even if it was a year later than sky showed it) so in the end to save a considerable sum of money I stopped.

I have been able to watch an enormous choice on VOD on NTL for some considerable time of some reasonable films.I predict that with VM the choice will improve dramatically.
So if you take away the sports channels and the Movie channels Sky has very little extra to offer in comparison to NTL err sorry VM because most of what's available on sky can be watched elswhere eventually. So losing Sky 1 is no hassle because eventually Sky loses the right to show those shows such as 24 and Lost and they move to other channels.I can wait.;)

and frankly I can easily live without Sky's contribution to the world of Drama. The 'award winning' Dream Team for one...I'd love to know who gave that show any kind of award?

No Sky is very worried, because they have never, ever sunk to the level of belittling NTL on marketing ads before. Now they are attacking VM because they do think that VM is a serious rival.

Geezer69 20-02-2007 13:50

Re: SKY VS Virgin Media

Very interesting.

I am looking at both at the moment, I am currently with NTL (£30 pcm for broadband, TV and phone). I am moving into a new house soon and have reading a lot about them both - on this forum and digital spy for sky. I really wanted SKY+ for obvious reasons and was going to go with them. Then the V+ service got announced and sounded too good to be true, especially with the dual tuners and HD thrown in. But I have read a lot of the same old problems that I experience now, customer service, slow repsonse from box to remote, EPG playing up all the time and ON DEMAND being prone to errors. I think I may just plump for SKY HD now, especially as they actually have HD channels and broadband is free with a wireless router also. I am still not 100% sure, but I feel they can offer me a better service

Media Boy UK 20-02-2007 15:30

Re: SKY VS Virgin Media

Here is the latest on SKY VS Virgin Media

Virgin are locked in talks with Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB to renew a soon-to-expire deal for the satellite giant to supply it with Sky One.

Mr Wall said that barring any surprises, hit shows 24 and Lost would not go off-air mid-season and that talks were continuing.
Describing meetings so far, Mr Wall resorted to a boxing metaphor: "There have been some low blows but no-one went down like Audley Harrison. Both sides are negotiating in good faith."

Kaychsea 21-02-2007 16:12

Re: SKY VS Virgin Media

I'll stay. We currently get the Sky channels in the Family Pack as was, still haven't figured out exactly what's what yet in the New Order, and Sports almost solely for the football. The only Sky One offering we both watch regularly is 24, although I quite like Rescue Me. I'd include BG as well but I've only just got into this and am working my way slowly through DVDs anyway so won't complain there either.

So we're both reasonably happy to head off down to the pub for games we want, or we'll have a look at the the Setanta offering next season. As for 24 and Rescue Me I may find the urge to delve into alternative sources for the first time.

There was never any mention of sky sports being removed, it is a premium channel and has to be made available.

The channels in question are sky one, sky news and sky sports news, which are part of sky's basic channel line up.

Although not totally representative, the poll on here is interesting. As the votes have risen, those planning to depart from VM has stayed pretty static, around the 15% mark.

If this is truly representative across VM's customer base, can they (Vrigin) really afford to lose 1/2 a million customers in one hit? Based on their own figures, this represents a turnover of £21.2 million PER MONTH loss.

Interesting analysis there. I don't think vm could afford to lose that many. Perhaps vm will need to offer a sweetner to customers fast?

If they did run the story the I expect people would be saying that they were using an impartial news channel's output to put forward their case against Virgin.

I think it's a responsible decision not to report it on Sky News, to maintain the channel's credibility.

I'm still not going anywhere. Yes I will lose some programmes, but better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

The last thing I want to do is faff around cancelling one contract and signing up for 2-3 to replace it, and end up with less of a BB service than I'm getting now.... So - I'm not leaving.

On top of that - I figure jumping ship now doesn't necessarily put you in any better position even if what Sky is offering at the moment looks more tempting - do you really think they won't have teething problems with the stuff they're proposing to launch? Let the dust settle and see what each one has to offer a few months down the line, then make a decision if a switch (either direction) is best for your needs. Give them both time to stop their posturing and start showing all their cards to the customers.
