The Countdown Begins to Virginercation - comingvsoon.com

From MediaGuardian: (http://media.guardian.co.uk/advertis...004838,00.html)

Quote:

NTL:Telewest will this weekend launch the first TV ads to promote its £20m rebrand as Virgin Media, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.

The TV ad campaign, which features a voiceover by Uma Thurman, consists of two 15-second "teaser" ads.

The first of the teaser ads, created by Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R, will air on ITV1 during Dancing on Ice.

In addition, from tomorrow 13 giant poster sites across the country will feature an ad using the line "Why shouldn't you be able to download something this big?".

....Both the TV and outdoor ads, which feature the Virgin Media infinity logo, highlight February 8 as the launch date of the main campaign.

"This is the biggest Virgin company in the world and the biggest Virgin launch ever," said James Kydd, managing director of Virgin Media marketing.
"We want to get people thinking, and build a sense of anticipation."

"...Sky has been anticipating us with huge amounts of volume [of PR and advertising] at the moment. I love the fact that Murdoch says this is just a name change."

they should run as a advert the first part of the Cinema Training Video. Slighly cheeky and amusing.

If all you do is spray it then yes, if you change the engine, the body, the wheels etc. then it's no longer a skoda. They've already proved they've reuced call waiting times. I don't know what other changes have been implemented myself internally, will have to ask someone in the heart of it at Customer Services what's changed. New systems?

One thing that remains is a lot of staff, but im my experience of Virgin when my wife worked there at the Virgin One Account, they don't suffer fools gladly, if you arn't pulling your weight you are likely not to get your contract renewed.

I think its been demonstrated on this board with people plying us with information and help that there are good staff there, i myself was stopped from leaving by someone on this board who shall remain namess (otherwise he will get a flood of emails) but is a perfect example of good customer services.

or paranoid! i work for ntl so am usually backing their corner, but realistically ntl or vm wont have the resources to threaten sky for a long time IMO.
ntl have had serious cash problems not so long ago and i would suspect still hasnt put that behind it yet, whereas sky has been the main provider of multiple tv channels for years, has built up a massive bank balance as seen with the itv buyout.

i think sky tv will always be superior to cable, but ntl bbi will always be better than what sky can offer, i would have thought there is more money to be made from tv than broadband. so unless vm can compete on price, which is hard when sky own most of the major channels they arnt going to pose a major threat

Re: The Countdown Begins to Virginercation....

Good morning NTL Telewest Customers. :)

There are....

FOUR DAYS TO VIRGINERCATION!!!

Good report at the Independent (http://news.independent.co.uk/media/article2214748.ece)

Quote:

....the launch party on Thursday at a venue in London's West End will inevitably involve dozens of scantily clad models and a plethora of celebrities (Al Gore and Kill Bill star Uma Thurman are among those expected to be in attendance). Sir Richard will no doubt make a grand entrance by parachute and grab the nearest of the aforementioned models to ensure the newspapers get a good picture for the morning editions.

...James Kydd, managing director of marketing for Virgin Media, says the cable group has left its network problems behind. "If Virgin Media was just about putting a lick of paint on the old NTL," he explains, "then we would have launched the new company last July.

"Since the acquisition [of Virgin Mobile by NTL], everything has changed," he continues. "The billing system has been overhauled, which will enable our customer service representatives to do their jobs properly.

"Historically, the old NTL was all about making acquisitions. Spending on everything else was frozen. We have spent nine months changing that"

Mr Kydd adds that it is the little things, as well as big operational changes, that have been addressed.

"One of the first things we did was to make sure all the call centre staff had chairs that weren't ripped. An awful lot of effort has gone into making sure the basic things have been sorted.

"And we have spent £5m on making sure there are enough staff to answer phones. Previously, the view was that it didn't matter if it took 30 minutes for a customer to get through."

As well as the improvements to the call centres, Virgin Media will this week launch a raft of new services, including at least one new channel. A new digital video recorder called V+, compatible with high-definition, will be introduced that will have greater memory than Sky's equivalent Sky+ box.

And there is also the prospect of a new "BBC on demand" channel for Virgin Media. The BBC Trust has given its provisional approval for the roll out of the BBC iPlayer, which will enable consumers to download any programme broadcast in the preceding weeks. Mr Kydd confirms that Virgin Media is holding talks with the corporation to discuss whether the iPlayer technology could be incorporated to create a new channel on cable.
Eh? New Beeb 'On Demand' channel? Sounds kinda exciting....but....we already have Beeb content on Demand via VOD. Not sure what their on about here.

-----------------------------

And from The Scotsman (http://business.scotsman.com/technology.cfm?id=183562007):

Quote:

...
The group is expected this year to increase its national coverage from the current level of 55% by buying bandwidth from BT's national network. This will allow Virgin Media to offer broadband and TV services in parts of the country where it currently has no customers due to technical constraints.

Longer term, Branson and NTL's management team hope NTL's five million residential customers will ditch mobile phone contracts with the likes of Vodafone and Orange and sign up with Virgin Mobile. At the same time, the plan is for Virgin Mobile's 4.3 million users to subscribe to Virgin Media's cable, phone and broadband products as "quad-play" moves from being a dream to a reality. NTL launched the "quad-play" bundle in September at £40 a month, but prices are expected to fall.

Analysts say that behind this week's launch is the belief that the ever-popular Virgin brand will add some much-needed glamour to NTL, which has earned a reputation for poor customer service. Ian Watt, analyst at Enders Analysis, believes the "Branson-effect" will benefit NTL but is unsure that there is substantial demand for "quad-play".

Personally, I think the papers don't have a clue about the current service and what is already available. The BBC has already been supplying content to the Catch Up TV service as a 'trial' and all the BBC Trust have approved is for this to continue as a full service and perhaps to increase the content. The person writing this article probably doesn't know On Demand already exists on ntl/telewest.

Yes nine months getting rid of the people that maintain the precious network

Yes we must make sure the call centre staff are comfortable and that there enough of them to answer the phone. That's great.

However, there wont be any engineer available to fix the fault

Agreed, heck, a lot of these press reports confuse PVR with VOD and maintain that NTL and Telewest were "rivals" when in fact they worked together on stuff before the merger.

IMO, if there is a new channel, it could be a "What's on BBC On Demand" channel which shows clips and highlights of content. I'd be amazed if its anything more than that (and extra VOD content from the Beeb).

Report at ThisIsMoney (http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/campaig...in_page_id=515) suggests an end to Indian Call Centres for Virgin and perhaps a bid for FA Cup and Ingerland international footy !

Quote:

Cable company NTL, which rebrands as Virgin Media this week, is considering ending all call centre contracts in India to try to improve a miserable reputation for customer service. It will also simplify its pricing structure to take on rival BSkyB.

NTL acquired Virgin Mobile for £962m last year and the new company will be launched on Thursday, boosted by an advertising campaign starring Hollywood star Uma Thurman.

As part of the deal to license the Virgin name from Sir Richard Branson, who owns 14 per cent of NTL, the firm has promised massive improvements to customer service and has spent £5m on support operations. But a source close to Branson admitted that Indian call centres were no use for technical queries. 'It definitely does not work for technical support,' he said. 'The issue is under very serious consideration at the moment.'

A new NTL package will include a mix of broadband and digital television costing £20 a month. It will offer broadband and phone for £20 a month while broadband, digital television and phone will cost £30 a month.

The company is certain to bid for the rights to the FA Cup and England home football internationals, which become available next month. These rights are currently held by the BBC and Sky.
Interesting. I dealt with an Indian Call Centre on Saturday (regarding sending me a modem capable of receiving the 10 Meg broadband which I'm now paying for) - and it was a bloody nightmare. This can only be a good thing IMO if they indeed go ahead with this decision.

HEXUS reports on the pending launch of VM (http://lifestyle.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=7804)

Quote:

We have no real clues what Virgin Media is going to unveil on Thursday morning but can only hope that it's a whole lot more understandable than the packages that are currently sold by ntl:Telewest. It would also be good to think that the mobile accounts can be bundled in, too (and for more than two phones) - and may be that there are even some significant savings.
Tech Digest (http://techdigest.tv/2007/02/what_virgin_med.html) gives VM advice on what they need to do, including improving customer service:

Quote:

One word on NTL's customer service in the past: Christ. It was every bit as bad as the complaints websites would have you believe. To quote one example close to home (i.e. me), when my telephone line was fecked and my digital set-top box stopped working, the response from customer services was inadequate at best (I had some choicier words at the time). Virgin Media execs are making the right noises about having sorted the problems since the NTL / Virgin merger, but the proof will be in the watching/talking/surfing.

That was my take on it as well, getting call queues down is a cheap and noticeable thing to do to give impression investment going up but I havent heard of network improvements etc. and nothing of analogue areas been digitalised. Also the 55% coverage figure is wrong.

yawn for me an all.

I look forward (not) to whatever glitch comes with the new software.

If I remember right in the last two revisions we've had the volume going up to +10 which caused a snap crackle and pop effect on the sound resulting in having to get a new box then on the last one they did it made changing channels such a chore instead of a joy.

So yeah, can't wait to see what they f up this time.

I'm not expecting massive changes overnight (I think some people are expecting The Virgin Sports Channel to launch tomorrow :erm:), but I hope VM can finally put customers first and finally take advantage of cable's urm.....advantages.

So long NTL Telewest - nice knowing you. :)

Could this be it? I mean could this really be it, the begining of the end of ntl's reputation for poor CS?

From the good old days of 2000 when we were all on free dial-up and calls to tech support were £1 per minute after waiting 3 hours to speak to someone, after all the "Coming soon!"s, after the way the cap was (un)announced to us all, could this really be the start of something good??

That's what I ask people who are expecting Virgin Sports on this weekend. :p:

All the rights to the main sporting events have been gobbled up by Sky, Setenta and the Beeb. There wouldn't be anything worthwhile to watch on Virgin Sports if it launched now. Maybe a few years from now...

Well......things can't get worse......I hope.

Personally, on the whole, I've been happy with the cable service. I know people will disagree (with good reason), and some trolls may 'contribute' to the discussion by yawning a bit and even asking if I've wet myself .

Over the 6 years I've been with NTL, I've gone from free dialup Internet (FREE! Couldn't believe it back then!) access to 600K Broadband >>> 1 Meg >>> 2 Meg >>> 4 Meg >>> 10Meg - and I'm paying more or less the same price for broadband when I first got it. Apart from Monday night, the broadband as been rock solid.

The TV software has....well, its changed. When I joined, I'm sure it has 7 days on the EPG. While now my standard box its down to only 1 day :erm:, my V+ has 8 days and all the other nice recording extras which I was dreaming about before Xmas. I can finally watch HDTV via Cable (even if right now the content is limited) and I can access Europe's largest True VOD system.

Interactive has improved too. I remember when I first got NTL, pressing red always crashed the bloody box. It took a while too (until the World Cup - not Germany, the one before I think) until the BBC "Press Red" feature actually worked. That was followed by multiscreen interactive content for Wimbledon and other events. Still not as good as Sky (where the heck is BBC News Multiscreen on NTL???), but its improved a bit.

The channels I want to watch, I can watch (but Sky are working on that ). The Sky HD channels would be nice - but I can live without them for now.

As for the phone - don't really use it much. I've had one major fault with it in 6 years.

So, IMO, there's been progress. Some of it (especially the roll out of VOD and PVR) probably should have been out a lot sooner. There's still plenty of work to do, especially on securing more HD/VOD content and improving interactive.

At the moment I'm happy with the price I'm paying for the services I receive (more so now thanks to the VIP pack).

Sky have zoomed ahead in some areas and it will be interesting to see if VM can catch-up, while keeping ahead of the competition for True VOD and possibly broadband.

Meanwhile, BT Vision, Tiscali TV and even the Microsoft's Xbox 360 (via IPTV) are entering the Digital TV Wars and I'm sure good old Freeview will gain more channels and viewers.

Either way, interesting times are ahead. :)

Well im excited even if others arent!

Ive been with NTL for around 3.5yrs on Broadband, and it has always been rock solid and full speed (NO BANDWIDTH LIMITING!!) (apart from one hiccup which a CM change sorted instantly)

TV now im well impressed with this, people have always said NTL TV was ****, but it certainly is not, i get Excellent picture and VOD is brilliant.

Things can only get better cant they now we are to be Virginified? :)

Im looking forward to waking up tomorrow and having 20/50MEG :D :D :D

I look forward (not) to whatever glitch comes with the new software.

If I remember right in the last two revisions we've had the volume going up to +10 which caused a snap crackle and pop effect on the sound resulting in having to get a new box then on the last one they did it made changing channels such a chore instead of a joy.

So yeah, can't wait to see what they f up this time.

Time for a party, folks:

From Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...2547a29057ce7d)

Quote:

LONDON -- British entrepreneur Richard Branson will host a party Thursday night for about 2,000 of his closest friends to celebrate the launch of Virgin Media, the latest entrant into what is becoming an increasingly competitive U.K. market for broadband Internet, television and telephony services.

But behind the glamorous facade, Branson is gearing up for a bloody corporate challenge to the might of the U.K.'s pay television leader, BSkyB, and the signs are that the gloves are already off.

The flamboyant showbiz launch -- to be held at London's Cirque Hippodrome -- will be in characteristic buccaneering Branson style, with organizers promising a host of celebrities and entertainment acts as befits the man who signed the Sex Pistols and Simple Minds to his Virgin Music label (now owned by EMI).

On Wednesday, Virgin Media offered a taster for the launch with the announcement it had signed a $36 million deal with Uma Thurman to promote the new multimedia service, which marketing managing director James Kidd promised would be "the most exciting and the biggest Virgin-branded company in the world."

Branson is promising to offer the U.K.'s first "quad-play operator," offering bundled digital television, Internet, fixed and mobile telephony, following the £800 million ($1.58 billion) acquisition of his mobile telecoms business Virgin Mobile with struggling cable operator NTL last summer.

He hopes to use the popularity of the Virgin brand to drive through a customer-friendly cable revolution that the cable sector's checkered history has thus far failed to deliver.

....But behind the scenes [at Sky] there is concern. Sky's lowered profits, slowed growth and higher churn in what should have been a good quarter have made the satcaster look more vulnerable than at any time in its recent history.

And Virgin is not the only competitor it faces.
At the start of the year, BT Vision launched offering a PVR service, on-demand television and movies and a freeview box offering 30 channels of free digital television. Earlier this week, Freeview announced its most successful Christmas to date, with more than 2 million new additions, while next year telecoms group Tiscali aims to launch a VOD, broadband Internet and phone service to 5 million homes across the country.

Branson is no stranger to corporate conflict. In fact it could be argued that he goes out of his way to create it. And though some analysts doubt whether there is really an appetite for quad play, they recognize he has the kind of marketing appeal that consumers love.

"There are a number of values associated with the Virgin brand, which includes fun and being young at heart. That's what they are looking to do (with the rebranding). That's becoming increasingly important because the market is so competitive," said Ian Watt at research house Enders Analysis.

HI, I'm here to help you get the most from your digital tv and blueyonder internet serivces from telewest. I'm going to show you how straight forward it is to get the information and help you need, now that beats spending all day reading instruction manuals hands down, I don't even know where slot A is. And If I can do it, then trust me you'll have no problem. But first I will be needing some willing voluenterres, meet the Morrisons, Come with me.... come on. First things first, I'm going to show how you can get information and help direct from your tv screen, Prepare to be amazed, First go to the TV home screen by pressing any of these buttons here, and you can press these buttons at any time to get to the home screen. From here simply press the RED button, lovely is'nt it? and it is really that simple because I just done it and I got witnesses. Now some people wont have this remote they will have this one, the only real difference is how you get the tv home screen, with this remote, simply press the big blue button which looks like this, the other thing worth knowing about is how to reboot you set-top-box, but don't panic, this simply means unplugging it from the wall, waiting for 5 seconds and then plugging it back in, now you should reboot when ever you have a problem as this resets the boxes insides and helps it to work perfectly EVERY time, now prepare to be amazed as Sheral reboots before your very eyes. Fantastic great technique! Another top tip and I know this sounds really obvious is to change the batteries in remote your say once a year, and before you give me the you-don't-say face its not quite as daft as it sounds, low batteries can confuze the set-top-box, and if you dont chnage them regualry you tv might start to behave a bit wierdly, usually by reuzing to respond or shutting down while your trying to watch your favourite show. So far so good but what about Blueyonder internet, for that we will need the help of Jezzes computer, up stairs in his bedroom ***SCREAMS***, so here we are in the most in-hospictal place on earth, yet even here there are signs of life everywhere, hello mate, say hello to all your fans out there. Yep I was just about to tell them about all the Bbueyonder rather nifty on and offline support services. Now you have 3 services at your fingertips , firstly the instant support tool is there to help if you cant get online or cannot access you email, it can diagnose all manner of computer email and connection problems, and should be already be automaticlly installed on your computer, allowing you to just click on this icon on your desktop, id it is'nt already installed on your computer you can download it from the blueyonder website, its a complete winner for DIY fault fixing and now making you fell chuffed with yourself, Secondly the blueyonder helpsite has countless pages full of really usefuk stuff like information on secuirty like dealing with spam, viruses, and how to manage you email account, just incase you wanted to an an email for you pet goldfish or something, now online help is avaiable on every page of the blueyonder website, lastly mate Bluetourials, now these little beautys will have you doing things with your computer that you never thought possible, the kinda online mini lesson which show you loadsa really cool stuff like how downloading music and how to processing digital photos, you name is Bluetorials will point you in the right direction, BOY: so what about making me a dotcom millionaire? MAN: Probbaly not but, you carry on mate its all yours, did'nt even got offered a cup of tea! so thats about it from me if you missed any of that I will be walking down the same street again in a sec and we can go though it all once more.
