I have a safecom router which is supposed to be compatible with my NTL home 100 modem but am having a problem to set it up, does anyone know if it is possible to get this to work with this modem,I have followed all the instructions in the safecom manual but cant get to the routers setup page on 192.168.1.254 just getting "page unavailable" I also dont get a internet connection with the router connected as instructed in manual

Hi, pajero64, do you know which model of Safecom router you're using? I've never used them personally, so I'd need to have a quick read of the manual.

Is it this one?

Also, are you using a stand alone cable modem, or a set-top box to connect to the internet?

Check that this router is a DSL type and not ADSL.

POWER PC ROUTER AND CABLE MODEM OFF.

Switch them back on in order

cable modem first wait for rdy and sync lights to lock on.
power up the router wait around a min.
power up pc and try to browse.

Which router is it? Safecom make both cable & ADSL routers and you need a cable one. One cable router on their website has the router set-up page as http://192.168.1.1 which I think is fairly universal for routers.

Hi,
It is the Safecom SWBARR-5400 Router and I have tried closing down everything and then powering up the"NTL:home 100 Modem",then router and finally PC but still no internet connection, but if I power off the Router I can then get my NTL connection

Just to check, you have the PC hooked-up to the router via an ethernet cable to start with, as opposed to trying to connect via wireless?

Also, when you've powered everything up in order (cable modem first, followed by router, followed by PC) what flashing lights - if any - are displayed on the router? You should see at least Power, Internet and one of the LAN PC Connections depending upon which port on the back of the router you plugged the ethernet cable into.

Assuming the correct LEDs are displayed, have you configured your PC? Make sure that the network interface card you've plugged your ethernet cable into is configured to obtain an IP address automatically, and that the DNS server is obtained automatically too (the steps for this are explained in the manual). Also, make sure that Internet Explorer isn't configured to use a proxy server, or if it is, that you have enabled the "Bypass proxy server for local addresses" . Next, open up a command prompt and type ipconfig /all and paste the output here.

Hmm - confused. When you power off the router you say you can get your ntl connection. Do you swap cables when you do this or just turn off router? If you just turn router off it sounds like the cables aren't in the right ports (not an expert here you understand) (see quick set-up guide, which you probably have already http://safecom.cn/code/product/WR/SW...0/FAQ/qig.html)

I have swapped over the leads into the Router and now the lead from the computer goes into the WAN port and the lead from the Modem goes into the LAN port, this is the ipconfig I am now getting, hope you understand it and can let me know if it is as it should be.

Thanks - I forgot to say, don't post the bottom section of ipconfig... you might want to delete the last section which displays your cable modem's IP address, just to be on the cautious side.

This part suggests your PC isn't seeing the router...

It's saying to use DHCP - so your PC gets its IP address from the router instead of from NTL's DHCP server, yet the IP address that your machine is using is 169.254.168.248, which is like an emergency fallback when the PC can't get any DHCP details - it's referred to as the automatic private IP adressing (APIPA) range, and can be anything from 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.255.254. What you should be getting, however, is an address that beings with the same prefix as the IP address of your router, e.g. 192.168.x.x.

As you've checked that the cables are OK when they're not using the router, and as you've checked that your network interface card on the PC is OK when hooked-up to the cable modem directly without using the router, I'd be tempted to say that the router itself is faulty. Did you buy it recently, and is it still under warranty?

Actually.... before you do that, I've thought of something we haven't checked.

Have you got any firewall running on the PC? If so, disable it temporarily and try hooking up your router again.

That IPconfig out is showing a valid USB connection to NTL -
For a router connection you should have -

No USB connection
Ethernet between Cable Modem and WAN port of router
Ethernet between LAN port of router and LAN card on PC

Pretty sure the lead from the Modem goes to the WAN port (nearest arial on router) and a cable from a LAN port should go to the Ethernet card

1. Before you begin, ensure that a DSL/Cable Modem is supplied by your ISP and the PC is turned off.
2. Connect your DSL/Cable Modem to the Internet Port on the Wireless Router (SWBARR-5400) using a standard RJ-45 Ethernet Cable.
3. Connect an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the back of the router to the Ethernet Port on your PC.
4. Turn On the DSL/Cable Modem first.
5. Then turn ON your Wireless Router (SWBARR-5400).
6. Check the LED's: The Power, Internet and WLAN LED's should be ON.
   For each active LAN PC connection, the LAN Activity LED's (1-4) should be ON.
7. Turn ON your PC.

I have had the firewall disabled from starting to enable the router, I bought the router from ebay recently so I guess it could be faulty.

pajero, not sure if you saw my question earlier or not... do you have a software firewall running on the PC, such as Zone Alarm, Norton, etc...?

It could be that your firewall is configured to not allow the new network connection, and is stopping you from obtaining an IP address from the router.

Many thanks to everyone for all your help, I have just bought a refurbished(By Netgear) Netgear WGR614 802.11g/b WiFi Wireless Router, so hopefully I will be up and running my Lan next week some time.

ps. I could have bought a new Router with what it has cost me for these two.

I myself need a new router as my belkin (F5D 5231-4), router + WAP can't handle 10Mb across one of the ports (WAN I think this was discussed in another forum a year or so ago.)

So I need to get a Wi-Fi one that has wired ports and can handle 802.11a/b/g. (what does the g mean?)

I know that my LAN on the lappy has 10/100/1000 so the routher should have this support.

Can anybody recommend one (this is to be conct to the NTL screw type cable (DSL?) and not ADSL.
