Virginercation: Coming sooner than we think?

According to MediaGuardian: (http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcas...002964,00.html)

Sky don't see them as a threat. Odd, I'm sure they brought ITV just to invest in the company.

Well I know that the new product names and new offers are being launched tomorrow the 1st Feb. So its starting to kick off.

I had the Virgin EPG appear this morning as well as a letter informing me that my DD will now be taken by Virgin Media payments instead of NTL.

There are new packages and offers being launched properly tomorrow. Such as 4 for £40, 3 for £30 all with the new package names. eg XL TV, M, L and XL Broadband.

The Virgin TV Guide only came online for Glasgow and Swindon today.

Here's some of it:

The BSkyB chief executive, James Murdoch, shrugged off the threat posed by the rebrand of rival NTL as Virgin Media, saying the satellite broadcaster offers better quality and better prices than cable can muster.Virgin Media will launch - presumably accompanied by one of Sir Richard Branson's trademark stunts - next Thursday.

Speaking after Sky announced a mixed set of half-year results, James Murdoch said: "I think there will be a huge amount of noise ... but basically customers are pretty smart and when you look at what we are doing in the market place today ... you can get [from us] a dramatically better quality TV, broadband and telephony experience than you can from Virgin."

"We are very confident that the product we have is of better quality, in terms of TV and broadband and telephony," he added, stressing that Sky is also currently the only high definition TV broadcaster in the UK.

According to his figures, the merged NTL and Telewest cable empire has gained a grand total - net of defections - of 4,000 customers over the last 14 quarters or three-and-a-half years. In contrast, "[Sky] added 4,000 customers every two days in the second quarter" of its current financial year.

The BSkyB chief financial officer, Jeremy Darroch, was rather more blunt: "The bottom line is we don't think a name change affects the fundamental issues they [Virgin Media] still have around product development, customer service and pricing flexibility and we think customers will see that."

In that booklet we received last year about the renaming of packages etc. it mentioned that talk package prices would be reduced in May. Whether that is still the case...?

i guess its buying time.

If sky can offer the same thing for £5 a month, and vonage and all those for about £7 a month, then y does ntl charge double/triple the price to calls to ONLY UK [not international:monkey:]

....ntl's and telewest's web sites are currently being updated to reflect the new packages. Lots of L this, XL that...very confusing.

Give them a chance, they have not even launched yet and you are expecting them to react. So far so good I think, you can now phone them and get an answer in a reasonable amount of time, this alone shows amazing progress as far as I'm concerned.

Having had a look at the website it appears the value packs are now better value and cheaper!

The old packs described in the PDF (from the link above) actually cost more and offer less - so it looks like things are going to get better.

Also, the web ordering now lets you order a value pack for existing customers online!

damn i thought the offers would be a bit more better [i actually dont really see much of a change]. If they had TU24 incl in the 3 for £30 price with some international destinations for free, then I think it would be a fair price, since even though it would be slightly more expensive than sky, ur bband would be unlimited...

But Sky's deal does not include the line rental that you still need to pay BT for. Therefore the Sky deal is 3 for £37 whereas the equivalent Virgin deal would be 3 for £35.50.

Actually, Sky is

£15 for 2 mixes
£5 for 8mb 40GB limit [suffices me]
£5 for TU24 w/ international calls
£11 BT line. [Sky have their own phoneline coming with £9 line rental i read somewhere]

total:

£36 [£34 with Sky phoneline...:(]

damn i really thought ntl mite compete better:shocked: What sky is advertising is 6 mixes, weekend calls like ntl, and 2mb bband i think for £26...

This seems like quite a good package - a lot better than the £26 package they are advertising!

Plus £11 for BT line rental = £37

yes, true, just saying what sky are advertising!

I think Sky should have a headline price of £15, with free w/e calls and free 2mb bband! Now that would make ntl look silly lol...

Re: Virginercation: Coming sooner than we think?

People Should stop comparing Apples and Pears

Telewest

3 for £30 - Television L , BB M and Talk Weekends + 5.50 for Evening & Weekends

Sky

Sky SSS £26 + £11 Line Rental £37.00

Television (All 6 Mixes!) = TW Equivalent XL ( and then you missing some!)
Broadband (8MB) = based on where you are in location to the exchange the comparable is at least 4MB L
Telephone Evening and Weekends

the extra 1.50 gets you alot more and this is why VM needs to and will price match!

Re: Virginercation: Coming sooner than we think?

I agree with what murdoch said other then the broadband which ntl is superior at.

If ntl offered something like below, then they could lower their headline price right? I mean ignoring freeview channels, the Sky 2 mixes include Star Plus, Star News, Star One, Star Gold, which is now going to cost £10 a month on ntl![for Star Plus alone]... I mean I would take the ntl Select Tv pack, but I think to add any channels u must have the base tv pack! So there are channels we dont want, but we must pay for to obtain any extra channels!
