Windows Classic Logon

I use the above Logon method as my PC's seems to login and load up faster. However, the username box used to remember my login name, but now the box is blank and i have to type it in everytime i want to login (even after a reboot). I do use CCleaner and ATF Cleaner, to clean the crap (tempory files blah blah blah) before i shut down the computer over night. I just want to get my PC to remember my username as its a pain having to type it in everytime.

LOL :D

I have the same problem but the opposite way round. My computer remembers my username but I don't want it to. How do I change it so it comes up as blank?

You have to edit some Local Secutity Policy, you'll find the editor at "Control Panel" then "Administrative tools". You have to select "Local policies" and then "Security options". Inside the list of policies there is:

- "Interactive Logon: Do not display last user name". Enable that;

Reboot your computer to apply the changes.

Best of Luck

You can fix it in XP pro but not home by using gpedit (as above ;) )

There is a sort of "hack" for editing security policy on XP Home. It'll be on Google somewhere. You cannot change all the settings as you can in XP Pro, but some you can - not sure if the user logon setting is one of them.

I can't find it via Google or the MS Knowledge Base. Going to trek downstairs to consult my books - it's in one of them...

No success :( I do remember reading something about copying certain files from XP Pro, but I can't find it anywhere. Will keep it in mind though - may stumble upon it.

That looks like it, madgamer.

It's very annoying when you know something exists but you just cannot find it :fit:

I can't actually find it, and the bookmark telling you appears to be dead. I'll have a root around on my HDD see if I can find it.

Edit: got it... attached.

Doesn't the auto logon option in TweakUI work for you?

From the site (i can access it fine from here)

2. Method

Before you do anything, make a complete back up of the system first. Make a system restore point and use NTBackup to back up the System State if you wish but I would not count on them. Also you should understand that this is for experienced users only. This was done in Windows XP SP1 Home Edition English version.

Basically you need to copy some files from Windows XP Professional to home edition, register some DLL files and check the registry.

1. Copy gpedit.msc to %SYSTEMROOT%\system32 folder.

2. Copy gpedit.dll, gptext.dll and fde.dll to the same folder. Copy %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\GroupPolicy\User and Machine folders with their contents to the same destination location.

3. Copy the six default administrative templates:

conf.adm *
inetcorp.adm
inetres.adm *
inetset.adm
system.adm *
wmplayer.adm *

to %SYSTEMROOT%\inf folder (normally hidden) and the four adm files marked with * to %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\GroupPolicy\Adm folder.

4. Register the gpedit.dll file by typing the command:

regsvr32 gpedit.dll

in the Run box. You'll see a confirmation box. If you omit this step when you try to run gpedit.msc you'll get an error message that a CLSID entry is missing.

5. Register the fde.dll file. If you omit this you'll get another error message (file missing) when starting gpedit.msc. This file is for folder redirection which is unsupported in computers not in a domain. Registering the file will get rid of the error message.

6. Register the gptext.dll file.
