New Virgin firmware code downloaded in Coventry

Looks very nice. VOD is still missing content and is still a bit hit and miss, but hey, the new code looks nice. :)

Pics online of the software for standard boxes (TV Drive software is the same but has extra menus/options for recording/playback and 8 day EPG):

Channel changing speed is the same IMO.

Thanks for that, missed that thread.

Gah, the speed of the 'Record by Category' feature hasn't improved :(. Shame really cos that would be really useful.

I shouldn't be surprised really - this code's main job is to 're-brand' and it goes a bloody good job of that. I'm glad to see that all of my settings, series links, recordings etc are still intact after the code drop.

quadplay 24-01-2007 12:35

Re: New Virgin firmware code downloaded in Coventry

Considering the new code is supposed to be 'rebrand only', there's also a lot of tweaks in the parts of the software you don't see, particularly for the TVDrive/V+HD boxes.

For example, the disk handling routine has been massively improved in the Virgin EPG compared to the ntl/Telewest branded EPGs. This should significantly reduce the number of recordings which fail with error 2056. :)

Sounds good. :)

Any chance of Virgin doing release notes for future code drops?

It does work. Its just missing content.

Speaking of content, some HD VOD content is showing up now for the Beeb. About 5 pages worth now.

Finally, I can watch Pride.

Funny - cos up until now, all my recordings have been OK. I get the new software and I get a 2056 error when attempting to watch the latest episode of Prison Break (even after a reset).

Other recordings are OK.

quadplay 24-01-2007 14:23

Re: New Virgin firmware code downloaded in Coventry

If it was recorded before the changeover, it's possible the old handling routine didn't close the file properly so it's been deleted from the disk but not removed from the recordings database (a known bug which is hopefullly fixed) - or alternatively the file was lost in converting the database from the old style to the new one.

If the recording started after the new software was downloaded, it might be that the tuner couldn't lock on to the signal at the start of the recording. Keep an eye on it and if you get more of these errors or see freezing/blanking pictures, call Faults!

Well, Prison Break was recorded on Monday night.

But Stargate Sg-1 and BSG (both recorded last night) are OK.

No real speed improvement here regarding channel changes.

What do you think is better with this firmware over the old version

Ok, I'm being really nit-picky here, but another little glitch I've noticed is with the V+ playback/FF/Rewind logo. Its looks fine and all, but at times when FF or Rewinding Delay TV/Recordings, its almost as if there some attempt at 'temporary transparency' around the right hand side of that logo (where the recording playback time/total recording time info is, especially around the rapidily-changing recording playback time numbers). Looks odd.

Not serious enough for me to call faults or anything. :)

Most of the comments made in my Virgin Firmware review for Standard STB's apply for the TV Drive version of the software, right down to the faster scrolling through the EPG and the EPG 'remembering' for a while what channel you had 'selected'
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...php?t=33606497

Of course, for the TV Drive version there's a few extra menus and options here and there relating to playback/recordings etc, and of course there's the 8-day EPG.

The only other thing I've noticed so far is that the software (for all boxes?) now seems to remember what channel you were watching when you reset it, and automatically tunes itself back into that channel.

Of course all these are visual changes I've noticed and there are other, deeper code tweaks which Quadplay mentioned earlier.

Yep, we know. It will be fixed in a future release.

Yes it does! This is something the ntl boxes have done for some time, but it's been introduced to the Telewest STBs including the TVDrive/V+.

Urm, bug?

I set a series link for The Lost Room (showing tonight on Sky One). When the TV Drive told me that it would clash with previously set recordings for the Bourne Supremacy and Desperate Housewives, I tried cancelling the series link for The Lost Room. Trouble is, it won't let me - when I try, it keeps on asking "do you wanna delete series recordings for Unknown Series"

If I indicate 'yes', it doesn't remove the series link. Even worse, going into the planned recordings option only shows me the 'View episodes' page for the Lost Room series link.

The only way to cure its fixation for The Lost Room is for me to reset the box. At which point the series link for The Lost Room is still there.

Its rolled out from your local headend (where ever that is). If you don't have the new software yet then its looks like your NTL boxes are getting their channels etc from somewhere outside Cov.

Erm, wow. That's some seriously odd behaviour, right there.

I'm beginning to think your database has become corrupt. If strange things keep happening (are you going round the twist? ;) ), a reformat might be the only recourse. But I'd give it a while before you go to such lengths!

Believe me, I thought I was going bonkers myself. :) Its ok until I try to delete that 'Unknown series' link - then the fun begins and my box is obsessed with The Lost Room.

I'm sure I read in my TV Drive manual that series links delete themselves after 30 days of the last episode - if so, I'll leave it for now.

I hope this formware happens soon this box at times is bloody useless. Woke up this morning and the box would not come out of rest I waited and waited then rebooted only to find the program guide was stuck just after midnight. Unplugged the box left it a while rebooted and yep still thinks its midnight. Am I right in assuming the 30 cooling off period still is in force on TVDRIVE cuz I have a few days to give up on it

Yes, if you reset the TVDrive, or power it off and on again, it will come back with no EPG data at all. The EPG is downloaded in the background and it might take some time after a reboot before all EPG data is available again.

Andy C 26-01-2007 12:44

Re: New Virgin firmware code downloaded in Coventry

Once the TVD has rebooted I like to give it a few minutes to sort itself out, load the epg, do any book keeping, etc. before I use it. Just like a PC, it's doing a fair bit in the background when it first boots up.

The above seems to work for me - the only issue I have (other than hit and miss VOD) is the lockups after about 12.10 when the epg is updating.

A.

Re: New Virgin firmware code downloaded in Coventry

It sounds silly - but I had trouble putting my box into standby last night after midnight. It just wouldn't accept the standby command from my remote. In the end I had to restart the box so I eventually could put it into standby. :erm:

And this was well after midnight, it was almost 1am.

I gave it loads of time. I gave it 10 minutes to come out of rest before I did anything this morning. Also if there is no epg and it downloads in the background why was it midnight last night? Its working again now I called NTL said im not happy as these things are stopping the box working.I said I wanted to opt out of my contract untill its all sorted. They then said it will be by 14th Feb and gave me a credit for Jan and half way through Feb then he said oh sorry it wont all be done by the 14th so god knows when my little section of boxes will be hit with the update. Least while its not working I can opt out of my contract under the grounds the service is not fit for purpose as half the selling features ie vod and sometimes the pvr specially late at night as this is when the system seems to have a mind of its own dont work properly. All I want is for it to work not to much to ask me thinks lol
