Re: New Virgin EPG
Cool, thanks for the info (and the screengrabs). I'm looking forward to the NTL Telewest rebrand - should be good. :)
PS - I don't post here very often. |
Re: New Virgin EPG
hey all 1st post...
it looks very similar to the current telewest set-up (epg design and layout) but with some decent improvements (i.e elimination of 3 x 3 grid)... I hope they have improved more of the UI ps is subtitles accessible form the now/next bar as i've previously heard? |

Re: New Virgin EPG
Good effort.
You seem to get so much more on a Sky EPG bar style layout than on a Virgin/TW/NTL one. Its the only thing that lets the new EPG down. Oh, a red skin would be nice to choose from too :D |
Re: New Virgin EPG
May look good but how many times will you have click to get programmes that you want to watch. Recently teleport is rarely available and the simple task of switching channels has become a nightmare. I reserve my judgement until the new service comes into force.

Skys bar is solid so blocks off half the picture, it doesnt allow you to find out any info (synopsis) on whats on without going into that dreaded EPG complete with muzaq! I has looked pratically the same since 1998, the last time I used it, you still had to navigate into the settings to get the subtitles. What added functionality do you get on a Sky Now and Nex Bar? Is there something amzing im missing? :D |
Re: New Virgin EPG
Thanks for the screenshots mate. :)

Re: New Virgin EPG

* What's on NOW and NEXT for your 50 favourite channels * The facility to switch on/off subtitles and audio description via the help button * Synopsis for current programme * The facility to scan up and down the NOW and NEXT info for channels and the respective start times for up to 6 hours (however the synopsis can only be read for the programme being watched - this is something that is being worked on for - a much anticipated/long running request) * The messages button to quickly check for email/text messages via sky active * It also displays if the channel being watched is in HD; if it carries Dolby Digital; if it's broadcast in Widescreen; if it has subtitles; if it's got narrative description and wheather you can record the programme without Macrovision scrambling the picture From what people report here and on Digital Spy, cable boxes are notorious for taking a while to change channel/give synopsis info/acxtion any request from the remote. So there is a world of difference between Sky and Virgin Media's banner - thankfully Sky's version doesn't take for ever to scroll through what's on the channel your watching (limited to up to 6 hours) and every other channel on the satellite platform. |
Re: New Virgin EPG
My miniguide has always been fast and contained the right data for nearly 12 hours. Including the ability to press i on the program you want information on including widescreen, rating and synop., instead of just the one you are watching. You can also turn subtitles on/off where avaliable. The new favourites gives you access to more than now and next, for the next 3 hours on the channel.
The functionality is now there, and the looks. It's now just a case of waiting for the current Pace & Samsung boxes to be replaced for something with a better spec - the TVDrive sorts most of the speed issues out. |
Re: New Virgin EPG
I must agree with the Captain. The standard of Telewest is far inferior to Sky but it does have good Broadband for those of us not close to a telephone exchange. I am fed up being sent new remotes, being told to replace the batteries (batteries that last eight times longer than others still get the message to replace them after a fortnight - I no longer do), being told that there is nothing wrong with my Pace box, being disappointed that a series I have been watching on Teleport Replay doesn't show the final episode, being unable to know what programmes are on because No Programme Information is available. But as I said I have my Blueyonder and I will reserve my judgement on what Richard Branson has to offer till after the changeover.

My box is absolutely fine at doing this and im sure many are: Ntls current Now and Next does the everything I require far better imo, messages etc are unecessary clutter. Synopsis, Subtitles, Audio Description are available by miniguide for all channels where available, info on w/s rating, repeat etc in synopsis. I think it depends what Sky box you have, the last box I used pretty standard was an Amstrad absolutely crap! The Pace boxes were not much better. Most Sky installs will be done with the cheap boxes unless you request otherwise. So the standard service will be a slow as I experienced. |

So what will happen to 0845 142 0000? Will it just go like 0800 953 9000? |

Re: New Virgin EPG
The 8am-8pm opening hours are the current ntl hours. I don't believe there's been an annoucement on whether the ntl or Telewest customer service hours will be used long term.
|
Re: New Virgin EPG
How come ntl are only open to 8pm?
|
Re: New Virgin EPG
Anyone in stoke got this update yet? i like the new catch up layout where u select the day, ntls is really hard to find stuff at the mo.

Re: New Virgin EPG

I would think that as the launch of Virgin Media is 14th February, that the software would be downloaded to other areas gradually between March and June subject to there being no serious problems with the trial in the pilot areas. I don't know whether there is a planned roll-out schedule or not. In any case things can change at the last moment. I don't whether you are on Bromley platform but IIRC when CR3 or CR3.1 was scheduled to be released in Leeds in April :Yikes: 2004?, the code was pulled at the last minute because of problems. Re: New Virgin EPG
is the email still on the new virgin epg and a chat &sms , like the old one.
|
Re: New Virgin EPG
Yes, the new EPG still allows access to TV Email, an SMS service and a chat service. The last two might be ex-ntl areas only, but I don't think so...
|
Re: New Virgin EPG
 Awesome! Thanks man, been dyin to see what the new epg would look like. Any idea when we (Belfast) will be getting the re-branded epg??
|
Re: New Virgin EPG
Got a letter from Telewest yesterday saying the re-branding starts in February.
;) |
Re: New Virgin EPG
I got my letter yesterday about the re-branding it was a joint letter from Virgin Mobile and ntl:telewest.

Re: New Virgin EPG
Looks identical to Telewest apart from the new colour scheme. Heres hoping its more responsive and the interactive works without the need for constant re-setting.

thanks in advance |

For the V+HD box, yes, it does. :)

Re: New Virgin EPG
Awww, back to lists. Just after I was getting used to to the 3x3 grid on my tvdrive..
Just got to wonder if the new EPG designer is a goth with all the black :) Mind you, I do like the gold on black, very reminiscent of the Cornwall rugby team colours |
