new lap top

I have a new lap top its a asus a7jc.
it has a built in tv tuner which I'm having trouble getting to work.
Just noticed on the black screen on start up it says.
pxe-261 media test failure check cables .
Would this be a hardware problem???
if so had i better get them to sort it as I don't want to mess with it.
thanks in
advance

Well firstly have you plugged in the aerial? and secondly are you sure it has the built in tuner and that its not just an option on your model?
I know both of those questions sound very patronising but I have had experience of both causing people problems in the past.

Analog/Digital TV Tuner & Remote
it has this
it works fine apart from the tv tuner

Re: new lap top

This is probably the Boot From LAN feature just warning you the the wired LAN isn't connected (there is no rj45 cable plugged in) and is nothing to worry about. You could go into the BIOS and disbale this feature if you wish and that message should disappear. You TV tuner is an inbuilt AverMedia Hybrid (analog and Freeview). Does it appear correctly under sound devices in the control panel? When you say you can't get it to work, what does it actually do? Give you an error? Have you run the channel scan in the TV program that comes with the machine?

Re: new lap top

yes it appears in the control panel and says it is working fine.
Chanel scan never finds any and says check your Ariel which i have

Re: new lap top

what you checked the aerial with? do you have free view that works?

Strzelecki 22-01-2007 02:07

Re: new lap top

is this a roof top or internal arial?

tick 22-01-2007 02:08

Re: new lap top

its a internal one that came with the machine

zing_deleted 22-01-2007 02:10

Re: new lap top

well im hardly surprised you aint got any channels :) try your roof aerial see if you get anything. Have you scanned for analogue or just digital?

tick 22-01-2007 02:11

Re: new lap top

thought the idea was to be able to watch tv on a lap top >
not lug a free viev box about ?
only scaned for digital

zing_deleted 22-01-2007 02:13

Re: new lap top

well digital tv needs a good signal if yoru in a strong area you will sometimes get channels using an internal aerial but I wouldnt imagine there is many areas that would give you free view, In weaker signal areas you need a full wideband aerial.
You wont need a free view box but you may need to strap an aerial to your back ;)

Re: new lap top

have looked on free viev advice sites and it says im in a strong aria

zing_deleted 22-01-2007 02:18

Re: new lap top

Re: new lap top

A good indoor aerial will work. One like the Telecam TCE2000 - Argos 534/2000 (£10) - I have this running indoors for my PC and my freeview.

This is blatantly signal strength issues, and your Media Test Failure just means it's trying to boot from LAN. Pointless...

Re: new lap top

Try your main house aerial that you know pics up freeview well.

Then buy a high boosted indoor aerial. the cheap ones will give you no decent picture quality whatsoever.

I bought one of these tuners for my sis who went off to uni but found signal problems even with a high boosted aerial a problem. also slow software and occassional stuttering / stopping. Sent it back in the end.

Re: new lap top

That telecam will be fine, it's probably the best indoor you can get. You might want a booster though. Just don't get one with one of those daft gain controls because they don't work and read the damn dB ratings carefully.

Remember a booster can't improve on a crap signal only a weak signal, if your signal is noisy the booster will amplify the noise, as well as the signal, and will introduce its own noise.

Also remember decibels are exponential so a 1 dB rise is a tenfold difference.

Sure about that?

nffc 23-01-2007 01:48

Re: new lap top

They're definitely exponential.
