Virgin Media Branded Modem?

Anyone got any ideas on whether we will be getting a Virgin Media branded modem soon? Will they just rebrand the ntl:250 or will it be a new modem?

Re: Virgin Media Branded Modem?

Once the current stocks of modems in each region are exhausted, new installs and modem swaps will take place with a black Virgin Media branded modem, which will be an Ambit 255. It's basically the same as the 250, but only has Ethernet.

No, but it physically looks the same except it's black.

Thanks for your help. :tu:

I might as well wait until more of these modems are available and then get an engineer to swap out my ancient Terayon.

Looks like an even cheaper piece of crap than the 250 if you ask me...

Keep your Terayon if it still works ffs....

It is EXACTLY the same apart from the fact that its black and lacks a USB port.

Oh and the ntl:250 is the best cable modem I have ever used, so I don't know how you come to the conclusion that its a cheap piece of crap.

Thanks for the link :) :tu:

I will be keeping my Terayon as long as it continues to work, but I've heard when my area gets upgraded to Qam256, it will no longer work. So, I might have to get one of these new modems.

I upgraded everything yesterday, new V-box and a modem to replace the STB for 10Mbps. The modem is the Ntl 250 which looks exactly the same as the new black Virgin modem, the Virgin one doesn't have USB connectivity neither does it come with a stand, hence it has a bigger footprint. As the V-box is bigger than the old STB I was pleased to be able to stand the modem vertically. Both modems support 40Mbps+ and as the 250 is very dark blue the colour's not a problem.

The new Virgin modem is stated to be available from Febuary. ...Did you enquire as to why you hadn't recieved the new modem?

You will get whatever modem the engineer has in the van. :)

No, I didn't think to ask but I'm happy with the Ntl one because I can stand it up and save space;) I guess they need to get rid of the old ones first.

Warning noobie question comming! ;)

Just reading the specs on the new modem it says that it supports 42.8mbits down as the max. If and when we get 50mbit this means that all the customers will need competely new modems. Why not start giving customers out modems that are capable of 50mbits so when the upgrade happens they don't have to replace all the modems?

I guess it's a question of how fast do you want to go or need to even; not every customer will find a need for 50Mbps.

Re: Virgin Media Branded Modem?

Its not the point, Cognut. If 50mb was a speed Virgin were issueing then customers would not be getting what they pay for.

...You picke dup on a good point, Kippa.

Sorry, thought Kippa was asking why don't they give out modems capable of 50Mbps now, as Virgin don't do 50Mbps it seemed irrelevant.:dozey:

Re: Virgin Media Branded Modem?

No problem. :)

...Though I've just realised that if the new modem supports 48mb 'down' then that would imply a 400-500mb connection. So its more than adequate. I thought Kippa meant 48mb connection.

Looking at his feed back the seller has sold a lot of these i wonder where he got them from ? also selling the hdmi lead you get with the V+ service:td:

Must be an insider. :td:

John, I don't think it's a good idea to post that link even though I know you were trying to be helpful. The seller is obviously selling these illegally so I don't think it's a good idea to post it.

So will the VM 255 be given to all customers new installs and fault swaps?

Re: Virgin Media Branded Modem?

I think the ntl:250s are still being given out... it all depends on what the engineer has in the van... :)

I had a 250 installed a couple of months ago but its black and only says cable modem on the front no mention of the company name rathe than the bright blue colour they were.

Did they possibly start changing the 250s at some point.
