Trying to install a new graphics card

I got a new Graphics card ( x800xt extreme edition) to replace my fx5900xt.

I know you said get the x1950 zing but just cant afford that one right now and got this one at a good deal.

Now the problem.
I uninstalled all the nvidia drivers, powered down, took out the 5900 and inserted the x800. Booted up ok and installed xtreme-g drivers....all went ok but i could not access the ati control panel.

So i uninstalled all ati drivers to install the drivers from Ati site, Upon rebooting i can see the bios, i can see the the windows loading page and when it goes to the desktop my monitor just goes black.

This is with a crt monitor cause my TFT just isnt seeing anything. It should see it when and if i get the proper drivers installed again.

Any suggestions ??

hit f8 after post and boot into safe mode. Uninstall the drivers again. Reboot into windows and you should be back.Reinstall whatever drivers worked first time and download either the ATI control centre or the Control panal which I would as its less bloated

The way I tend to do it:

1) Goto GFX properties in Device Manager
2) Update drivers and choose yourself, Standard VGA Driver
3) Restart
4) Uninstall Nvidia drivers and use Forceware Remover or Detonator Destroyer to remove all remnants (search Google for either)
5) Shutdown
6) Install new GFX card
7) Power on
8) Install new GFX card drivers
9) Restart

Should be good to go.

OK now that i have the graphics card working i have another problem now.

When i connect the monitor using the DVI cable i get nothing but a black screen yet it works great using VGA.....i'm not using the dvi->vga adapter either.

Any ideas ?

Is your monitor set to digital input? What about the PC, is that set to output on DVI?

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

afaik there is no option to choose analogue/digital for the pc, as the card automatically outputs digital, which is why you need the DVI/VGA adapter to plug into the VGA socket on your monitor.

It sounds like the pc DVI socket is ok, as it works with the VGA adapter, but no picture using a DVI cable suggests a problem with the cable, or the DVI socket on the monitor?

I'm using mine with an ATI9800se & IIRC when I changed to using the DVI connector on the monitor, it detected it automatically when I booted up???

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

so both cables are installed?

zeus9876 19-01-2007 19:49

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

doubt a dodgy dvi cable as it was working with my 5900xt...just cant get it working with the x800xt

Yes zing both cables are installed.

I just tried setting my monitor to digital and unplugged the vga cable when i pressed ok to detect but still went to black screen and the light on my monitor went from blue to amber like it does when there is no input

thats where I got it wrong, I assumed it was a DVI only output, didn't realise it had D-Sub as well :dunce:

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

Yes it has vga and dvi inputs? Auto button on the monitor yes but does not do anything.

edit: Just tried restarting with just the DVI cable in and pressing the auto button on the monitor and still does nothing

Edit Edit: Could it be something in the Catalyst Contol Panel ? Reason for asking is when i 1st had this trouble it was only connected with the DVI cable and i had to connect a CRT monitor to see the desktop. Upon using the CRT after a little playing around i was able to clone the desktop from the CRT to the TFT monitor which again was connected via DVI cable. SO could it just be a setting somewhere ?

Damn I am too late, but before you formatted did you try putting in the old graphics card first! That might have showed the screen.

Sorry man, I have just spend a good 10min on my catalyst centre I could not really see anything.

I'm not familiar with ATI control panel, but it does seem like you've managed to set it up to use dual monitors, and the main monitor is the CRT on VGA, so when you change the setting to Digital its trying to change the main monitor (crt) to digital and goes all nice and blank.

Can you find some option to force single screen, (your pc may go blank then) just shutdown pc, unplug the VGA cable, and only leave the DVI cable in.

Then reboot?
Or even try to switch the primary display between 1 + 2

Do you get to see post when just connecting with the dvi? if not then its nothing to do with drivers if it is it could and simple way to test is to uninstall drivers and the control center reboot pc with dvi connected and reinstall drivers this will just use dvi. If you do see post when just using dvi you should be able to boot to safe mode

In the options it says single display and has the name of my TFT not the crt. I dont see anything to switch between vga and digital.

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

Well after doing some more research i came across a couple of threads where peeps were having the same problem but with a gateway monitor and using an ATI card. Some switched to a Nvidia card and it solved the problem and some still have the problem as far as i know.

One person said to put the system in standby mode....unplug the VGA cable(leaving the DVI cable connected)....unplug the monitor......wait about 10 min....turn on the PC.....plug the monitor in.....and it worked for them

I tried this and it worked for me too BUT i couldnt see post screen and i had to wait until the PC was up and running and turn the monitor off then on again then i saw my login screen.

So all i need to do is figure out how to get it so that i can see the post screen and not have to turn the monitor off and on again and i will be set.

Any ideas on this ?

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

I know its getting old, but just wondered if you had resolved this issue at all, for future reference.

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

The issue with the DVI cable is not resolved as yet. I have reverted to using the DVI and VGA cables together. Still loking for a solution.

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

Very odd, my dvi cable starts up straight away and also picks up the optimum monitor resolution for my lcd screen.

Re: Trying to install a new graphics card

Yes it is odd....I've even did a clean install with the new graphics card and still had to use the VGA cable.
