20Mbps News?

Its now the new year, and time for a new thread regarding 20Mbps ;)

So does anyone have some fresh news when we can start expecting 20Mbps? They are being really silent about this one ...

dev 12-01-2007 02:02

Re: 20Mbps News?

considering areas cant do 10mb, why should ntl do 20mb? to give more things for people to complain at?

murfitUK 12-01-2007 02:45

Re: 20Mbps News?

My 4Mb service still won't go above 0.5Mb because the network is saturated. Until they get this problem fixed there's really no point in them even thinking about higher speeds.

For folks like me (paying the full whack, by the way, because they still won't give me a discount based on rubbish service) you may as well talk about 20000Mbps instead of 20Mbps.

qasdfdsaq 12-01-2007 03:21

Re: 20Mbps News?

Seeing as most DSL areas can't do 8mbps, is the possibility of ntl:Telewest introducing a service that can only be had in some areas really that incomprehensible?

 Gutted. If ya only getting 0.5mbps and the network is saturated in your area, surely you should get some sort of compo? If not why not? :(

So the fact that i have been saying don't listen to rumours,
Don't expect them to do 20 meg just because they tested it everyone still expects 20 meg.

I would expect 20 meg when NTL say we are going to give us 20 meg.
I expect NTL to give use 20 meg when the network can handle 20 meg.
I don't expect NTL to give us 20 meg because the jungle drum rumour system says we are getting 20 meg.

Here's a new rumour ;) lets see how fast this becomes the expected. reality "NTL to offer 100 meg each way connection's and a free router and free DVD blanks" The bloke down the pub told me that one, Cost me a couple of beers too he said he had overheard the cleaner talking about it at hook:Yikes:

If NTL decide to give us 20 meg i am sure they will tell us :)

People forget that NTL test a lot. Doesn't mean they will release it. I'm thinking of WiFi in London, 100 Meg in Dolphin Square and the "Turbo button" thing some members tested a while back. None have (AFAIK) gone on to launch.

I suspect that NTL will at some point launch 20 meg. I also expect them to launch 50 and 100 meg. But, they will only launch these speeds if and when they feel the market demands it. No point in launching those speeds (with all the associated network upgrade costs) if your competitors in most areas can only manage 8 meg.

brundles 12-01-2007 13:06

Re: 20Mbps News?

That's true enough for the speeds, but what about the prices? £35 isn't very competitive for that speed where it's available any more.

Ah yes, but didnt they give everyone 10mbit without telling us?

Tehehe...it's funny though, some ntl employee's have been told it's coming later this month, just a roll out without telling anyone...same with some managers, yet some people higher up have absolutely no idea NTL are even thinking of 20mbit, goes to show how ntl work as a company doesnt it ;)

Why would they give you 20Mb when 50Mb trials are in progress?

etccarmageddon 12-01-2007 16:44

Re: 20Mbps News?

because 50meg trial could be a long way off from a 50meg roll out due to technical issues - ie. new modems. whereas 20meg is simply a case of a new config file which when installed will instantly cause the network to meltdown!

Alex Brown said so

At this point there are no plans to make any changes to our access

communicated via the usual channels.

What's the bets that they know the network can't cope from the increased speeds, so they won't be increasing the speeds but the throttling will be applied to everyone instead.

Toto 13-01-2007 20:41

Re: 20Mbps News?

Given the trials that have been going on for speeds well above 10 meg, I would assume that "Alex Brown" is not giving anything away.

The term "no plans" is like the widely used statement by football club owners who have "full confidence" in their manager, weeks before they show him the door. :)

I'll take that bet, assuming you mean ntl/Telewest will NOT be increasing speeds?

And don't think for one minute that the likes of Sky et al will not attempt some sort of traffic shaping in the very near future, if they can attract bandwidth hungry customers on to their network, they will have little or no choice but to filter those bad boys who are leaching it off everyone else.

Its so easy to implement a bad boys pipe with adsl. Just ask anyone on Tiscalie that has exceeded there AUP more than once ;). Also as $ky are using UKonline's DSLAMS then they can traffic shape as soon as they want to as UKONLINE has been traffic shaping its customers for the last year.

Sky bb Max 16 Mb will still be better than Ntl 10 Mb, they both shape but sky is £17 a month cheaper and even if sky's contention ratio it high it will STILL be faster than the UP TO 10 meg (PMSL) that i dont enjoy from ntl:rolleyes:  :D

Yes, as my friend on plusnet found out. :)

I think many seem to forget that the likes of ntl and Telewest have put Broadband on the map for domestic users in the UK. They have also prompted serious competition too, which is good for all, and allows posters such as Salem feel real satisfaction with his current supplier.

I still feel though that cable has something more to offer, and will do so very soon.

Re: 20Mbps News?

....yep, get full speeds here too. Unlike the tv service, ntl know how to do broadband, at least in my area.

Was on the phone to retentions yesterday and they said that the 10mb will be upgraded to 20mb soon at no additional cost. They wouldn't give me an exact date when this would happen, but the clear statement was that 20mb is coming and soon. These guys tend to know a little bit more than the main customer relations dept, so we'll see soon enough if they're correct or talking rubbish. I also asked about a 50mb service and pointed out that there are trials going on. The retentions person was aware of the trials but said he had no information when or if this would be coming to ntl. So 20mb maybe soon, 50mb not anytime soon.

If's its in your exchange.
If you are less than about 2.5 km's from the exchange.

2 big if's but if $ky are so much better than what you have now when are you moving to them. ?

If i was on ADSL provided out of the NTL exchange then as i am 10 .7 KM from the NTL exchange i would be lucky to even get 512k. However as i am on cable modem i get this.

broadband needs a return path, which a Sky dish doesn't have, it can receive, only, not transmit.

To be honest I doubt it. While Be have a good product it's still subject to the usual ADSL limitations and in the grand scheme of ADSL suppliers still a minority ISP (especially as 24mb is only available on LLU exchanges).

The financial state of NTL: TW means that they can't afford to compete directly with an ISP like that - they will aim to remain competitive with the majority market share. A high quality 10meg service does just that. (OK, some will argue the high quality part of that line but you get the idea...)

During IBC, Pace and BigBand Networks will be demonstrating the results of their collaborative efforts consistent with DOCSIS 3.0 specifications, which will show downstream rates in excess of 100Mbps for the delivery of broadband and video data. The demonstration consists of the BigBand Cuda(r) CMTS (cable modem termination system) and a prototype Pace channel bonded DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem
"Furthermore, DOCSIS 3.0 also incorporates support for the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), which greatly expands the number of Internet addresses that cable operators can use. This, in conjunction with the far greater broadband speeds (up to 160Mbps downstream and up to 120Mbps upstream), will enable more IP-based services to be offered to consumers."

adsl2+ really should be classed as 16mbit l commend bulldog and sky for doing this, whilst it can reach 24mbit it is very rare and most people achieving above 16mbit usually do it by squeezing their snr margins to low levels.

You are mistaken.

I can quite happily get 20mb with a SNR of 6.5. And as it stands my SNR is 2.5 and my synce speed is 23.5mb

Chrysalis 25-01-2007 14:07

Re: 20Mbps News?

you are one of those people who think it happens to me so it must be common, do some research and you will find over 16mbit is rare. Bulldog and sky arent capped to 16mbit there is a very good reason they marketing it as 16mbit.

Also to add atm has a heavy overheads penalty, you would need a synch speed of 18mbit+ to even get 16mbit tcp speeds. So on a normal snr margin of 6.5db (6 considered the lowest for stable connection by every isp I know off) your tcp throughput would be around 18mbit.

I don't know, the 20mb trial wasn't really publicised but speeds of 50mb was.

ntl, or Virgin Media now are going to have to do something soon because companies like Be are really extending now, Bulldog, UK Online too...

What modems are currently given out by NTL, and what are the maximum speeds they can receive and send out over the CAT 5

Re: 20Mbps News?

So there are threads here on Cableforum, ntlhell & digitalspy regarding upgrades to 20Mbps for 10Mbps customers very soon...
... people have even reported that their upload has been upgraded to 500K on the 4Mbps service (up from 400K) confirmed by an ntl employee on ntlhell as being upgraded to the 500K upload on the 4Mbps service.

Perhaps ntl are now going to upgrade so people think Virgin Media are awesome....

Where as I find my "outdated copper" gives me a stable and fast (around 15.5Mbit) connection where Ntl couldn't give me a working connection let alone speeds approaching 15.5Mbit.

Lets not get into this ADSL v's Cable again. Shall we just say each to their own?

Cool, I was wondering why my upload speed was slightly faster yesterday. :)

The annoying thing is, I can't check what my upload speed because I have a Terayon modem. :(

sure when people stop mentioning adsl is good just because a small % get near max speeds.

from an average perspective the average cable connection will outperform the average adsl connection, especially when 20mbit is rolled out.

That is very true. That is why I switched. If only VM would rollout to other areas for other people.

Something's on the move!
Had problems loading sites for a few minutes then normal service resumed, did a few speed checks and got consistent 20 meg, then it went on the blink again and I was back down to 10.
So now I am expecting a surprise tomorrow.
Just don't disappoint me VM.

I would be willing to bet that cable 10mbit probably has a higher average throughput then 24mbit adsl2+ services.

Current network cant do 50mbit (unless its bonded??)

whole network would require being updated first.

And a virgin rep said that 50mbit would be available to CUSTOMERS during the first quarter of 2007, well, only got till end of march.

but if i was you i wouldnt get my hopes up, ntl lie, virgin will lie, it's only a name change guys, still the same company underneath.

If you think ntl, Virgin Media (i need to get used to calling them that) are going to upgrade people to 50Mb for free, you've got another thing coming, perhaps 20Mb for free, but there is no way they would give 50Mb

he said 'To ALL paying customers' within the first quarter of 2007.

If they cant/are not going to get it out in that time frame, why lie and say they are?

correct, there is no business sense in providing 50meg for £35 a month as there is no competition from ADSL/LLU etc - ie. ADSL can only reach HALF that speed and only for a small percentage of homes.

awibble 08-02-2007 17:07

Re: 20Mbps News?

But if they did, im pretty sure that most people that can get Cable would be even more tempted... I never knew how good cable was untill BT couldnt give me 6.5Mb at my new house. It seems cable is pretty good compared to using BT and Sky.

If virgin really extend the network, they could cripple BT and Sky with the packages they are offering.

why lie? a customer service person could lie to get a sale or cos they are serving their notice period after being made redundant - any number of reasons.

Still, not the smartest thing to lie about while on live tv now is it, gives the company a bad rep (but hey, ntl already have that :P)

ahhh right if that promise was made on live TV then that's a different story - they will have to stick to it just like the promise to make 10meg the standard speed with different usage allowances!

they are expanding but only via adsl LLU, meaning they will have the same copper limitations that adsl has, so I am expecting a different service in non cabled areas.
