Freeware Porn Blocker?
Hiya.
This is from a request from my mother, My father goes on the internet for porn, and some of the stuff is revulting, We were wondering if there is any free applications which will block these? It would be fantastic if the application was hidden so he would'nt know it's there, and we would also like the pages to come up as "Page cannot Displayed". I know we;re asking for alot but I thought I should ask, we've tried all sorts such as Parental control in Internet Security, however ironicaly he goes "My pc is un-useable, I cannot even play spider solitaire, the cards all come up one by one and it takes 15 minutes for my pc to load", This is untrue he has a 3Ghz setup and the cards are a whizz. If anyone could help me I would be much appreciated, |
Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
there is a firefox extension called procon and it now works with Firefox 2 - though it isn't really subtle enough for you needs.
Perhaps worth turning on strict safe search in Google as some people are to dumb to know what that part does and wouldn't spot it. |
Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
Errrrrrr hang on, I assume as he is your dad that he is old enough to be looking at these web pages so what gives you or anyone else the right to say what he can and can't do, yeah if he leaves pages open or makes desktop displays I think a word would be in order but leave the guy alone.
If the content it's against the law then report him other wise install ccleaner to delete all traces. To be fair though as you are no doubt not telling him about this thread I think if someone comes up with a solution to YOUR problem then he should be allowed to ask how to get rid of the thing you put on.. |
Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
The guy has come here for help, not to be judged on his situation. He's posted it in an IT Discussion area so that's how we should be approaching this - as an IT issue.

Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
If your dad has been frequenting porn sites then I would suggest a virus, spyware, adware and malware scan is done daily as those sites are known to be a huge source of hidden extras.
You can also use the hosts file here to help block the problem of sites dropping ads etc in the background. Host file zip Quote:

One thought is that if you have a netgear router you can set up filters to block certain keywords that would be kinda invisible. |
Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
Also, a pack of wet wipes kept next to the keyboard will help keep things clean ;)

Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
Soz Garth... dont think that was appropriate considering the distress that this issue is causing

His dad is doing nothing illegal, but this guy wants to sabotage his father equipment and we view it as an IT issue? Both are rhetorical questions.... What do I think? I do not mind supplying the "how to" to him but also tell this guy he cannot do that to his dad or anybody else. You simply cannot boobytrap other people's computers! |
Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
So you would rather ignore the obvious strain it is putting on the familys' relationship with the father? Yes it's a difficult situation and if you don't want to get involved in it then ignore the thread.
We don't always agree with everything posted on this forum but if you choose to get involved in a thread you don't like the look of then you have to accept that others will argue with you and have a totally different viewpoint. |

Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
Obtaining a porn blocker for a computer is not illegal and the OP is welcome to ask how to go about it. Any further discussion about whether or not he should will be removed as off-topic.

Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
It's actually owned by my mother (as she payed for it, but my dad calls it his), and it's my mother who is requesting this, last time I spoke to her about this subject she said "I don't want him anywhere near me when he gets aroused by that, obviously I am not good enough for him" :| on that lines.
I also pay for the internet and would rather not have such images going though the network, and he does save these disgusting images on the desktop for anyone to access. |
Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
Try the hosts file to begin with as that is an easy one to do. Also make sure you thoroughly scan the PC with antivirus, spybot s&d. spywareblaster, adaware etc to make sure it is clean. Porn sites have been known to leave trojans, spyware and even viri on peoples' computers.
Also, do you know what sites he frequents most as you can then block those URLs directly within IE or the browser. |
Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
Have a look at Naomi
http://www.radiance.m6.net/ When it decides the site is inappropriate, it simply closes IE without any warning. Also, you can set it so that the tray icon is hidden, if you want to go for the full stealth option. Hope this helps! |
Re: Freeware Porn Blocker?
Hi,
Try the Parental Filter from ecommsec. I have used it on a couple of pc's, for kids. It can sit hidden and can be directed to display any page or site if you try to visit a site containing banned content or words. Its free and small and did not seem to impact on the browser perormance. Look here http://www.ecommsec.com Or here http://www.tucows.com/preview/336406 Hope that helps your problem .. If your dad asks why no porn just say the ISP must be blocking content.. hehe . ;o) Good luck. |
