Netguard - worth getting?
Hi everyone
I've been an NTL customer for a couple of years now with no major problems. I only just discovered Netguard though and I have installed it. So far everything seems OK but I wondered if anyone else has had any issues with it. If so what Ant-virus, firewall etc software would you recommend? |
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
AVG, Kerio or Zone Alarm are good..... and cheap ;)
|
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
Thanks Paul. I assume you have tried Netguard then?
|
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
When it first launched, since then I have used other tools. I prefer using standalone apps as you can control them better.

Re: Netguard - worth getting?
I use netguard as AV and firewall... and so far it seems to do the job....
|
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
Cool, how long have you used it though? I have read about lots of people finding it great for a week or two but then their computer seems to slow right down.
Fingers crossed ours don't! |
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
never had any problems with ntl netguard on the desktop but unable to install it on the lappy but i would say yes install it on ya desktop

Re: Netguard - worth getting?
For some reason Netguard would occasionally cause problems receiving CF notification e-mails and so all incoming e-mails would fail until I turned it off (temporarily)
Now I use Comodo which seems to be much better (and its free) |

Zonealarm was slowing everything down.... big speed increase with Netguard... above spec for newsgroups too! Have been using it since it was first offered, and reccomend it to all my NTL mates now. |

It is possible that Netguard has improved since my experience so I recommend that you contact Technical Support and ask about file sharing over a wireless network. I hope this feedback enables you to make the right decision for you. |

Re: Netguard - worth getting?
:Yikes: Running two software firewalls is asking for trouble! Potentially they could start checking each others activity and choke your machine.

Re: Netguard - worth getting?
I used to use ZA for my firewall, but haven't for about a year now. This was because if ZA was enabled, every 3 hours [almost to the second] my system would completely lock up, & the only thing I could do was hit the reset button.
I had a bit of a look around at other firewalls at the time, but didn't find any freebies I liked, so ended up resorting to XPs firewall, which I haven't had any probs with. As for Netguard... I had a virus/trojan/whatever [spywarequake] go through/past it like it wasn't even there. Luckily, due to other security measures I'd taken [I forget specifically which now, it was months ago] it wasn't able to "phone home" or spread out, or whatever, but it did cause me to look for another A/V prog. In the end I chose Kaspersky, which I'm rather happy with, & can definitely recommend. As for other firewalls, there's a freeware 1 I've got my eye on [Core Force], which is still not at version 1.0 yet, but is looking interesting. Its only drawback is it's not the most user-friendly or easy to configure app you're ever likely to use, though if somebody's the hardcore-networking-geek/engineer type they might enjoy it [I'm not, hence why I've yet to be bothered to have another go at it - apparently it's been improved a bit since last version I tried]. |
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
I've recently tried netguard on my laptop and had no problems with file sharing, using cable connection, not wireless.

Just occured to me that "file sharing" in this thread may mean things akin to Kazaa - in that case, I haven't tried that. Can share files between computers on my LAN without problems, all running XP Pro Just read comments in another thread, I'll get my lappy out sometime and check file sharing in BOTH directions on lappy. |
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
Got my laptop out and................Netguard prevents other PCs from seeing shared drives on local LAN. Daft really, advanced rules imply that files can be shared on local private networks, but only seems to allow outbound connections!! Netguard on both PCs obviously kills it.
Gone back to my other firewalls, Comodo and Filseclab, both freeware. Left Netguard AV on laptop. |
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
avg 7 free is fantastic anti virus!
I used to use sygate personal firewall but you have to pay now so ive been using comodo firewall lately i find this easy to use and its free, i think the windows xp firewall is decent, however you dont need a firewall if you have a router. why have software firewall when you can use a hardware firewall, what ever you do dont go near norton!! |

Please do not rely on a hardware firewall on its own - that is a myth - yes its good to have one as a line of defence but you should ALWAYS have a good 2-way software firewall, I say 2-way because the Windows firewall is a 1-way and, again not recommended. Safe surfing :tu: |
Re: Netguard - worth getting?
I am using Netguard but all I get is a continuing demand for signing in on yahoo and e bay, loss of sound and pictures on email ,not being able to receive mail on outlook express, warning that time is up after about 10 minutes use.Very very slow and unable to get sites I want.loads of junk mail that I never got before and spoof email from ebay. HELP WHATS WRONG?

A Hardware Firewall is OK as long as you 100% know that there is nothing running on your PC that will send nasties out (viruses, personal data, that sort of thing) best to be safe than sorry. |
