Roll out delayed !!!

Well confused.............just phoned CS about TV Drive installation.

They said roll out was 12 Dec 2006 but it has now been delayed until further notice due to tech problems in the trial !!!!

Told me NTL will be promoting via the post

Mike

As in, the roll out in your area, or the roll out over the entire network?

Still taking orders in Glasgow for installation as a colleague had one booked in yesterday evening.

Re: Roll out delayed !!!

That news from Mike doesn't exactly suprise me - its been well flagged up both on here and over at DS about how shaky the Telewest TV Drive's software implementation is and the useability issues that are still ongoing even now with the "revised" code for use on ntl headends.

I think we're beginning to see that the idea of trying to use the buggy TW box and software, rather than going with the SA 8450 DVR that was originally to be built for our side of the network is beginning to be shown to be a bad decision in hindsight - and whats more, the unspecified length of the delay is playing right into the hands of Sky HD.

The longer any delay on further rollout is, the easier it's going to be for Sky to pick off disaffected ntl TV Drive users, together with those who now have no prospect of it coming anytime soon ... again.

(And there's probably no reason to stop orders in Glasgow - they're the guniea pigs for us on the ntl side.)

While I wasn't too pleased about them using the MPEG 2 Telewest box, I can see why they made that decision. If they were still going to use the
SA 8450, then we would probably have had an even longer delay to see HDTV on the NTL Network.

As for the delay - you get different info about TV Drive depending on who you talk to at CS. Someone on this forum rang them up 3 times and was given 3 different HD channel lineups for TV Drive .

CS don't seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if people can ring up tomorrow (outside Glasgow and Teeside) and book an installation date for TV Drive.

Re: Roll out delayed !!!

I phoned up NTL several weeks ago to ask to be reconnected to NTL TV as I was ditching SKY. They persuaded me to get a TVdrive fitted, at first I was reluctant but now I want one. This meant waiting until this Thursday to get it fitted as thats when it is being rolled out in my area (Northants)
After reading this thread I thought I had better ring and check and I have been told it is definately being fitted this Thursday. When I told him that I had read that the roll out was being delayed he checked with another dept. and told me I was going to get one fitted. I'm still a bit dubious but I suppose I will soon find out.

I think the problem is that customer services don't know either :( all I can suggest is keep trying 'till you get it.

I will post back in the morning after I call them. As that's when they tell me I can get it. But I fully expect to be knocked back as well ;)

Told ya!!! ;)

Why does NTL find it so difficult to give out consistent and accurate info about their services? I really hope they get this sorted out in time for the Virgin re-branding.

Hell, even the channels for the TV packs on the NTL website are screwed up. According to the website, ITV 4 isn't part of the family pack.

:D LOL, I'm tempted to ring up later this week to find out what's happening with TV Drive in my area.

So far, its been:

"Ring back next week" (mid November)

"Ring back in December" (late November)

"No, you've been misinformed, TV Drive won't be out until January" (early December).

I bet if ring up, it will be, "its been out since November! Where the bloody hell have you been??!?!" :p:

TV Drive, or V+, sounds like an excellent idea and a further development of the cable TV service, neglected for so long.

I shall definitely be taking the service, but I am in no rush and shall wait until after the roll out when the "melee" has died down.

Looking forward to that one. Sky can stick its Sky + box in an inconvenient place.

Had a call from NTL Sales at the request of retentions :

Latest (Version of the saga) is that installations can be booked from 20th Dec for January 8th or after (remember that there are NO installations from 22nd Dec to 2 Jan INC so there will be a back log and currently in some areas installations are being booked for 1st week of january already)

All installations not yet completed are to be cancelled so says the man from nottingham sales call centre

This was of course as at 18:05 this evening and it will all have changed by 18:06 .....

Called sky and surprise surprise Sky+ can be installed on friday !

Why is life with ntl always so hard !

i can understand peoples gripes with ntl for telling them 1 minute it will be fitted then cancelling the next, but surely we have to remember that it isnt even officially launched yet and if it wasnt for forums like this no one would know it even existed. so if ntl are holding it back because of software issues isnt that a good thing?

it would of been better if CS had been consistent in their answers - they should of said to everyone who phoned who weren't in the initial release area to phone back after Xmas which would of given them a chance to iron out any bugs - instead people were told december & therefore are now disappointed when they are told it's going to be January at the earlies

It's quite incorrect to say that no one would know about TVDrive if it weren't for forums like this. Like everyone else in the Glasgow area I got a mail shot from NTL telling me how wonderful it was and encouraging me to sign up - which I did. Nowhere in the mail shot did it say that it was a test or even a restricted launch nor did it say anything about any teething problems. I knew that Telewest had been using it for some months and assumed that, because of this, and the fact that the box is a Scientific Atlanta one which has been used for some time by a number of cable companies in the US, all the teething problems would have been ironed out. But then I forgot it was NTL I was dealing with.

Called Sales on the 13 Dec who couldn't understand why people were ringing up trying to book dates and said we would get a flyer when T Drive would be released. So left it until I saw above and called CS this time and booked in without any issues at all, got a date for 13th Jan, thats Frimley / Camberley area.

Well i got my vod fly-er a least a week after i found out it was working of my samsung box it could have been there longer. So when members this forum who are near me ( east London) get it booked I'll call.

VOD and the PVR aren't the same thing. You can get VOD on a normal box but for the Pvr you need a new box

Fitting due the 10th of Jan 07

Well it arrived today at 13:00, drove me out of bed (nights) otherwise they would have fitted the second access point in the bedroom around me.
Three fitters on a whirlwind mission. I swear not much over 1/2 Hr start to finish.

Only annoying thing, the HDMI lead one moment by the TV, next discovered disappeared  after they "whirled" away to another fitting, and the new Samsung LE32R74BDX should appear in about 10 days

I presume I have a software update to look forward to, as speaker vol. control inactive, happy days.

Roll out seem to be going pretty smoothly in Cambridge. I just phoned up CS, and after a pretty long time on hold (no surprise there!) I got put through to a guy who was very helpful.. even going as far to suggest that I keep the old box and cancel it after 12 months to avoid paying the £75 install fee.. so ok, I only save £15, but it's better than nothing! I've only got one TV though, so it'll just be going in the cupboard..

Installation booked in for next Wednesday (17th) afternoon! :D

Was going to be installed 23rd Dec but Christmas tree was in way so postponed it till tomorrow. Checked yesterday and still booked so it's up at 8 am to await delivery. Will probably come at 1 pm.

Anyone tell me when I can expect a roll-out and to be able to book an engineer in Peterborough (PE1 area)?
