not@ntlworld.com now @
im not sure if this has been discussed on here yet but i hear that our email addresses will have to change to @virginmedia.com how easy will the switch be ?

Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
No idea but I'd suggest that forcing a change would be fraught with chaos unless ntl:telewest set up some autoforwarding thing that allowed existing user names to redirect email to the new accounts.
I'd suggest that all they would do is prevent you signing up anymore @ntlworld.com type accounts. |
Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
Depends how they do it. If ntl map the old addresses over to the new ones, that is more complicated for them. But for us, makes no difference. They would probably run the ntlworld and virgin addresses in paralell with each for six months to give everyone a chance to switch over to the virgin ones. Ie if someone sends you a email to joebloggs@ntlworld.com that would instantly map over to joebloggs@virginmedia.com.
Or, they may just do what ntl did when it took over Cable & Wireless (CWC). We all had to sign up for a new ntlworld email address as the CWC addresses were from then old managed by Boltblue, a totally seperate ISP. Eventually, the CWC addresses got changed to bolt blue. Can't say I really keen on having a "virgin" email address though. I would have thought that the email might be @virgin.net as that exists already rather than creating a new virginmedia one. That would probably be used for staff only. What we can be 100% certain of, is that at some point the ntlworld name will disappear completely. Ntl's bosses have made it clear that once they become "virgins" they never want to see or hear the name ntl again. I'm sure we can remind them, though:) |
Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
I dont want to loose my ntlworld email address.
this sucks if it happens i might just stick with web mail ik |
Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
It's unlikely to happen, just like all UK Gmail users weren't made to change them all over to Googlemail. I think it'll just affect new users otherwise it'll cause chaos.

Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
I still have my @cwctv.net addy, dont use it as it costs 25p per message

Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
hm... I don't think ntl will make everyone switch over, but I think new accounts will be something with the virgin domain. i.e. name@virginmedia.com

Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
I still use a lineone.net email addy as a throwaway... don't know who hosts it these days, probably tiscali or someone.... but I haven't had an ISP account with them for about 6 years!

Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
ooops i forgot to mention i saw this in the web user magazine which states the company has plans to change customers email addresses when the merger is complete. A spokeswoman at virgin/telewest/ntl told web user : we will be writing to our customers about any changes well before it happens. At this moment in time we don't know when this will happen but we will make the process as easy as possible

Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
Is there not going to be a problem where joebloggs@ntlworld.com and joebloggs@blueyonder.co.uk both will want joebloggs@virginmedia.com?
I for one would be pretty ****ed at a) losing my @blueyonder.co.uk and even moreso if b) I get a less desirable @virginmedia.com one. |

Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
If they do change to @virginmedia.com what will happen with the POP & SMTP servers, at the moment these servers are pop.ntlworld.com & smpt.ntlworld.com, so how will they get around this, if they change the servers to pop.verginmedia.com & smtp.verginmedia.com there will be a lot of confusion as people won't be able to send or recieve there e-mail's unless they send out new setup CD's for those that don't know how to setup the servers manualy.

Which is probably why the marketing boys (and girls) think it is a great idea, but when technology start explaining to them what needs to happen the suits (who are picking up the bill) will veto.

I think though its far too early to speculate as to what Virginmedia will choose to do with the legacy domains. |
Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
I don't. The rebrand is in Feb, so not long at all. Unless you think ntl have paid millions for the Virgin brand and yet won't apply this brand to one of the main parts of their business.

Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
it was easy for NTL to redirect me@mcmail.com from C&W so its just as easy to now move to the new names....
i did prefer the me@mcmail.com TBO iv not tryed to use that for a while but i assume the settings still allow posting as well as receaveing from these addresses?.... |
Re: not@ntlworld.com now @
I suppose they would do as BT did when they stopped using the name BT Openworld when it became BTYahoo. Most BT customers can be still be reached using both @BTopenworld.com as well as @BTinternet.com (except in my case you can't use the latter because I messed up the settings on the website and the very polite Indian people couldn't sort it out for me and I gave up! :erm:)
