Modems and Routers left plugged in?
 

Do you leave the Modem and th Router plugged in 24 / 7. My Linksys Router sisits atop a shelf and it does get warm. I have been turning everything off at night..as I do the computer. But each day I have to keep unplugging the Router from the elec. supply to get it to connect. Would it be better to leave it always on.

Also I have it plugged into a Surgemaster at present. Is this correct or would I be o.k. with just an ordinary plug etc.

Do you leave your fridge plugged in? Do you leave your central heating plugged in?

Of course you do ,so leave your modem/router plugged in. I know it kinda flies in the face of the whole global warming thing but thats just how the cookie crumbles. If you use t'internet daily then best leave it on.

I take it you have your router locked down access and security wise? I permanently switched on router with no security is a sitting duck.

Router has been on 24/7 for the last 2 months, can't even remember last time I booted the cable modem. Don't think it has been turned off in a good few months.

I also turn of the PC,Modem & Router every night.

Main reasons - 'potential' fire risk and no point wasting electricity.
Against that, powering up a device like modem/router puts stress on the power supply.
I have no plans to leave my network on overnight.

It seems like there are varying opinions here..so guess it is a matter of choice then. Thanks...I think I will keep unplugging it..just in case.

I always leave mine plugged in. If it was meant to be turned off then there would be an off switch.

I'm with Aragorn, I've been switching them off at the wall for a couple of months now. I'd like to know how much electric they use left on 24/7, they don't use that much do they?

PC x2, router x2 and modem have been on for months (perhaps years!)

I've always had my modem left on since i got it, in fact the only time i ever unlugged was to reboot :erm:

I rarely switch my PC off aswell nowadays, when i first got it i switched it off after everytime, then went to putting it in hibernation, now i just leave it on, i'm always playing music or something on it anyway lol.

We have a variety of kit running permanently - cable modem, router, VOIP ATA and USB Printer server. PC is left off but plugged in though but setup using wake-on-lan so I can wake it up from work if I need something.

In our case it's more vital to leave the router and modem plugged in as the VOIP line is our primary line these days.

I turn both my router and modem off as it is a waste of electricity.

I am thinking of buying some timers that will switch them on automatically when I need them.
eg. Timer 1 will switch on the modem at 7.50am and then timer 2 will turn on the router at 7.55am so everything is on when it needs to be and switch off automatically when I need them to.

We have some timers that are used on certain things like that but I'm not convinced yet about buying timers specifically for that as an energy saving measure. How much energy was used to produce the timer in the first place?

The modem and possibly router if you have one will use barely any electricity at all. Check the wattage on them, I'm sure it's VERY low (maybe around 10W). Then look at your computer, if you have a modern machine it's probably somewhere between 300W-500W. I have my desktop, server, laptop, modem and router on 24/7.

I leave my wireless router and modem on 24/7 but a couple of months ago my router had smoke coming out of it! It was 3 years old so the warranty had expired but I emailed Linksys anyway and they replaced it free of charge! :)

Well it does seem that we all have differing opinions on this subject..but I do switch off the comp at night..I don't leave it on...as for the Laptop..I thought that might get a bit too warm if left on for too long...not had one long so not too sure on that one really..and at the moment using it plugged in anyway...to be near to cable if I need to plug in the internet.

Power usage for a modem and router is insignificant. It would cost you a few pence week to run them. As for them being a fire risk, Ive never heard of a router/modem burning a house down. I agree with the guy who says about turning them on and off stresses them. If they stay at a constant temperature (which the pretty much do when they're on) the components wont be stressed as much. Hot to cold to hot and so on stresses them.

I turn mine off at the wall every night - again because it's wasted leccy and the possible fire risk. However it does get left on overnight sometimes if I'm downloading stuff!

i leave my Router on pretty much 24/7 only time i tend to turn it off is to reboot it if its locked up.

But then i swear we have people in this house who are still on the internet at 3am :Yikes:

yes, my modem hasnt been turned off for more than a week in over 6 years of use
