Monitors

CRT Vs TFT

TFT = Samsung SM204B (21" 1600 * 1200 5ms)

CRT = A.N.Other 21" CRT

Discuss ;)

CRT monitors are cheaper, brighter and have better colour accuracy than LCD monitors. LCD monitors take up less space, have lower power consumption and are less tiring to work with but have a narrower viewable angle.

Yes, well that too, that's why I have an Acer 19" widescreen LCD monitor.

Re: Monitors

Also, a 21 inch LCD generally has a bigger viewable area (up to a couple of inches more) than a 21 inch CRT because the size is taken from the diagonal size of the glass and the tube has a fair amount of extra glass around the display area.

If you're a heavy user don't discount the lack of eye strain too - I'm a software developer so I spend a lot of time looking at a screen. I switched over to LCDs about 4 years ago now and the improvement in my eyes has been immense.

CRTs can damage your eyesight, which LCD doesn't

I'd say that's a pretty good reason to have an LCD monitor.

Infact that was THE reason for me to buy one!

Indeed - I have also been told this by various specialists in the last few months. So anything that can help save your eyesight must be worth it.

Is that damaging to your eyesight or just more tiring on the eyes?

I think it is more likely to cause you tiredness.
Wether it is a CRt or TFT, as long as you take regular breaks and are in a well lit environment then there should be no problem.

I bought a 19" CRT as about 2 years ago they were a lot cheaper than the equivilant 19" TFT.
I also find the colours a lot sharper and brighter on my CRT.

I was always under the impression that it actually causes blindness. Stems from the old "sitting too close to the TV will give you square eyes". It won't give you square eyes (glasses?), but the TV would damage your eye sight if you sat 2' from it. If you wouldn't do it with a TV, why a CRT monitor? They are still the same. My physics isn't brilliant, but they still both have electron guns, phosphorous screens, etc. Whereas, LCDs don't give off the same radiation etc.

I am not as well up on employment law as I should be, but I know bits. I know there is a load of health and safety guidlines that apply to CRTs only, LCDs are exempt from.

TFT screens don't have an electron gun and the only place you'll find phosphorus is in the backlight.

The reason TFT's don't cause headaches is because the image is stable until changed where a CRT display is continually being refreshed, your eyes still pick up that continual change even if you don't actually "see" it. Look away from a CRT screen so you can only just see it in peripheral vision and you'll probably notice it. The lack of electromagnetic radiation from a TFT may also help with the headaches.
TFT displays are also cheaper to run, about a third of the cost of running a CRT, a major consideration considering current energy prices and environmental concerns.
They also look a damn sight nicer and are much easier to place, be it on a desk or wall or wherever.
I will never go back to using CRT's despite CRT's superior colour accuracy, the benefits I and others here have mentioned outway that single downside. I never noticed a difference in gaming except being able to play longer without getting tired eyes, so I don't count that as a negative :p.

You do realise that the glass in modern CRTs is heavily leaded?

Whilst looking at light in front of you for hours isn't a good thing the real problem actually is staying focused on one point for a great length of time, the muscles in the eye tire because of this. So actually in effect, LCDs are no better.

The 20-20-20 Rule

When people are doing near vision tasks, such as looking at a monitor, they tend to blink less often. This can result in decreased tear production which leads to dryness of the cornea. A dry cornea will result in blurred vision and irritation of the eyes. To prevent this, follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take an eye break and look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will give you a chance to blink and produce some tears and will give your eye muscles a chance to relax.
Taken for here.
