NTL HD Problems

Just got TV Drive installed yesterday. Box running a bit slow at times but not completely surprising as its in the early stages. Try to set up HD on my LG "32 HD ready LCD Model RZ/32LZ55 and figure out there are actually no hdmi connections on it even though the salesman who sold it says the set was "foolproof for the next ten years" . Only DVI. so purchased a HDMI to DVI cable for 35 gbp and placed from the HDMI connection in the back of the tv drive to the DVI connection in the tv. Also bought an RGB cable(another 30 gbp) and put that to the component sockets at the back of the tv drive but still not getting a true HD picture. Guy at the shop seems to think we SHOULD get one with the HDMI to DVI but any help would be appreciated. Ty

Re: NTL HD Problems

yeah thats the one. In the HDMI slot I have the HDMI to DVI and in the HDTV sockets I have the RGB leads. Also a Pure AV scart in the TV scart socket for brighter colouring etc.

Daft question, but have you tried changing the settings on the TVdrive to enable the HD ouputs. Also make sure you try 1080i as well as 720p as some early screens don't support 720p @ 50 Hz.

Re: NTL HD Problems

Have you changed the settings on the TVDrive to output HD through either HD or Component?

lostbhoy24 23-11-2006 01:19

Re: NTL HD Problems

yeah have changed the settings to hd component as we don't have hdmi connections on back of tv. And tried both 720 and 1080 but still not getting HD signal. Also change it to RGB as have the leads in the tv to the back of the tv drive. Although that does make the picture much clearer it is still not HD. Obviously would be much easier having a set with the hdmi connections at the back but we also thought it was possible to use a component to recieve it.

EssDee 23-11-2006 01:39

Re: NTL HD Problems

Does the TV support HD over component?

lostbhoy24 23-11-2006 01:52

Re: NTL HD Problems

yeah its DVI-I (With HDCP) at the back and at the side its Component (Supporting SD, Progressive Scan & HD) with an xd engine so it looks like it should be supporting hd.

Re: NTL HD Problems

I'll apologise before I ask this!

I assume you are checking your PQ on channel 108 (BBC HD Preview)?

invisibleboy 23-11-2006 14:23

Re: NTL HD Problems

is this not because of the hdmi-dvi cable hdmi exists as protection i.e. the same as why you cannot record from VOD meaning that the software will not allow the signal out of the hdmi as it doesn't have the right return signal

lostbhoy24 23-11-2006 18:11

Re: NTL HD Problems

yeah been checking 108 to clarfiy and also tried to access the HD on demand content but doent even let us do that as it comes up with message saying unable to view HD. It could be something to do with the copy protection but I thought with the HDMI to DVI cable we would still be able to get the signal.

Well acording to Mark Horley, TVdrive does support HD over DVI and component.

Here is the link http://lifestyle.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=5670

10th Question down

HEXUS: Do your TVDrive boxes support HD format over DVI and component connections?

MH: Yes.

Re: NTL HD Problems

Eventually got the tv switched over to HDMI so thanks for all the suggestions they were very helpful. The only problem now is that there is no audio output now the HD is up and running. The only way to hear anything is by changing it back to normal widescreen and watching it without the HD even though there is only one channel BBC at the moment. Have to say that the picture is pretty phenomenal but obviously need the volume too. Bought a Left Right cable to insert into the TV Drive from the side ports on the tv but still no audio whenh HDMI running. Hopefully someone may have some idea what is needed cheers

Re: NTL HD Problems

I take it you've tried rebooting the box? I had no sound through HDMI and a reboot fixed it.

Creative 24-11-2006 21:57

Re: NTL HD Problems

He's using a HDMI to DVI converter, DVI does not carry audio.
Lostbhoy can you use the digital optical out connector to an amp or suchlike?

lostbhoy24 24-11-2006 22:23

Re: NTL HD Problems

do u mean holding in the buttons on front of the box then getting to the output menu? If so yeah have done that and still no joy. May have to invest in a sound system. :o:

you could, presumably, short term, use the stereo phono jacks with a suitable lead to your sound card, or an external amp ???

This wouldn't work. The audio inputs into the TV are dedicated to a particular video input. (i.e. for AV1 and Av2 video inputs there will be seperate audio inputs labelled inputs 1 and 2).
Not sure the monitor would expect audio with the DVI input. May be selectable within the TV menus?
Get an amp!!!

iain_herts 24-11-2006 22:58

Re: NTL HD Problems

if u look at the back of the tvdrive there is a audio out phono plugs which will output the audio of the selected channel that is being watched same as how a skyHD box works.dvi is only picture it doesnt carry audio

my tv only has dvi and that is how i get sound out of my tv works well

Creative 24-11-2006 23:02

Re: NTL HD Problems

Ok Lostbhoy assuming your TV works the same way as Iains then I'd look for the audio inputs on the back of the set which work with the DVI input. Maybe time to Read The Flippin (!) Manual. I know you have tried plugging the output of the box directly into the TV, but you haven't found the right inputs yet!

iain_herts 24-11-2006 23:04

Re: NTL HD Problems

yeah is does have the input for it 1 x audio line-in ( RCA phono x 2 )

and this 1 should do the trick

Only if the TV recognises that input as the audio input when using DVI.
Lostbhoy you will have to RTFM and see how to force the TV to use the phono inputs to it.

Re: NTL HD Problems

Yeah cheers for the help again. Will get there eventually Will def have a look at the manual tomorrow again but have a feeling its my pc sound socket i may have to use as suggested on another forum so if thats the case its another trip to maplins. Ta much

Re: NTL HD Problems

Well it only took a few days but HD is running and Audio is fine too. Ended up buying a phono lead and plugged it into 5.1 speakers so even better quality but maybe disgruntled neighbours! Now all we need is more HD content on good old NTL!! Cheers again for the suggestions and help

Re: NTL HD Problems

if you connect the tvdrive from hdmi to hdmi on a tv does this carry sound? apologies if this has been asked before.

EssDee 26-11-2006 12:02

Re: NTL HD Problems

Yup.

HDMI carries audio, DVI does not.

dranny69 26-11-2006 12:04

Re: NTL HD Problems

thanks for that. just another quick question about tvdrive , if connected thru hdmi are you still able to watch non hd progs or do they come thru scart as normal?

EssDee 26-11-2006 12:15

Re: NTL HD Problems

It looks like Scart OR HDMI, i.e. you configure the output on the TVDrive to use HDMI. This appears to disable output via Scart.

Re: NTL HD Problems

thanks again

EssDee 26-11-2006 12:45

Re: NTL HD Problems

No probs.

Just been doing some testing on Scart and HDMI. The PQ on BBC HD (channel 108) thru HDMI is obviously superior, however for SD broadcasts the quality is better thru Scart. Is this what to expect from upscaling? It's going to be a pain having to chop and change the TVDrive config depending on what you are watching.

lostbhoy24 26-11-2006 22:29

Re: NTL HD Problems

Well I would say from what I have seen its much better being upscaled. Even channel 5 looked as if it was HD late Friday morning when the football was being shown. For a minute I actually thought it was being broadcast in HD it looked that good. But maybe the performance may vary depending on what tv or the strength of signal etc. I will prob use HDMI from now on.

Re: NTL HD Problems

I have the same tv as lostbhouy24 and have just had an hd tvdrive box installed. I am having the same problems as him and have tried the same things to remedy them as him, hdmi to dvi plus the rgb leads, etc

When i go to the change display & audio setting and make the changes as per the tvdrive booklet and then do the confirm test my picture vanishes. I also do not get asked to confirm that the picture is ok as per the booklet.

When i go back to the display settings it defaults back to my original settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please do not be too technical.

No, you cannot view HD over DVI unless your DVI display supports HDCP. If you see this message, it means that your display does not support HDCP. Most HDMI displays support HDCP, but DVI displays might or might not do so.

After you press ok -you need to change to your HDMI channel on your
television (using tv remote), you will then see a screen which will ask you
to press ok or text button to confirm the settings.

If you dont do this the box will revert to a scart output on your original
settings.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem....before you comfirm the settings, you need to change the input on your TV. So:

1. change display settings on your V+ box to HDMI hidef or COMPONENT depending what you are using...but dont press ok just yet.

2.change the input on your TV to the specific HD source

3.at this stage the screen is blank...now press ok on the V+ remote twice-the picture will then appear and will ask you to confirm settings by pressing TEXT on your V+ remote.

worked for me fine ;)

DVI doesn't carry sound, V+ has optical audio socket, so, you need to buy optical cable and set HDMI audio override: ON in Display & Audio Settings. That allow you get DD and 5.1 as well.

Good Luck

Thanks for that I got it to work straight the way but with no sound, which I knew would happen.

I did get the sound going through phono plugs on the tv drive and the back of the tv but it sounded "tinny" and only came out one speaker on the tv or hi-fi if I connected it to that.

How did you get sound from yours?

Thanks again!
