trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

HI I have a cd which is bootable with a program on which is surpose to reset your admin program but when I booted it up it picks up my second harddrive which is an IDE harddrive an does not pick up my primary Sata drive which has xp winstalled on it.

any ideaS?

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

Problem as I see it your sata controller isnt native and needs a driver when installing windows etc to be seen.this I would imagine is why the program cant see the windows install.

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

There maybe a setting in your BIOS to set your SATA controllers to IDE compatible mode (not a good idea if you have arrays though :))

funkyCable 11-11-2006 20:00

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

arrays? I have a dell if that helps.

zing_deleted 11-11-2006 20:02

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

got into bios by pressing f2 or del key at boot and hunt around for sata settings saying either raid ata ide or base mode if it says raid change it to any of the other options and try again

funkyCable 11-11-2006 20:28

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

Hi
I did that and found a menu called Sata Operation

Well under this menu it had these two options

RAID Autodetect/ ATA: Raid if signed drive otherwise ATA
RAID on : Sata is configured for RAID Every Boot.

It was set on the the first one "RAID Autodetect..." when I changed it to "RAID on" it came up saying:

"Settings change!

Attention!!! changing this setting may prevent OS from booting or require reinstalling. Do you want to contiune?"

I did not do it as I was not sure if it was safe or not..... any idea if is would be safe? or what it does?

Graham M 11-11-2006 20:30

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

Yes it'll be safe, do it before using the password cracker and change it back after, I say this without any prejudice :)

funkyCable 11-11-2006 20:32

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

any one else to confirm its safe?

Hold on a sec : This reminds of when I had to do this to a corp Win2k3 server :

Whats the CD you're using : I bet it's linux based as the one I used was linux based but I had to also load up the SCSI drivers before it could mount the RAID and simply NULL the administrators password.

Whats the CD ?

funkyCable 11-11-2006 20:41

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

yes its a linux based one

Yeh but whats it called !!! :)

: I'm sure I used it too successfully... The only trouble I had was that I had to slap the SCSI drivers on a floppy and load them into the kernel once that was done the cd went ahead and nulled the admin password.

LOL lemme google for it.

Anyway how confident are you with using linux commandline as the CD method is definitely one of the safest but also technically awkward

http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_admini...password.htm#1

This is what I used I believe cos I was messing with floppies not a cd

create 2 floppies 1 is the kernel second are the drivers.

Yeh if you dont know linux it could be painful....

But a heartly very best of luck to you

swoop could u pm CrC-3rr0r vbmenu_register("postmenu_34156064", true); your link to it?

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

Gooowwwwwon u know u wanna :)

What I did was I backed up the data from the RAID onto a spare IDE drive before NULLing the admin password.

Everything went smoothly except when after 3 days I decided to create a dynamic disk and get RAID working properly trouble was that the disk failed when I did this LOL

luckily I had a backup :)

Just make those 2 floppies mate : It's all straight forward and the utility warns you before making any changes.

I'm confident that it'll pick up your SATA raid as it's a commonly supported driver unlike the expensive RAID controller I was dealing with a couple of years back.

Yeh best chill before committing.

I remember what like seems many years ago spending all night trying to get a graphics card to work just so that I could play quake. 8 o'clock in the morning tired and fed up I thought I'd try something different....

15 minutes later missus found me dazing into the distance with tears in my eyes. Lost 27gigs of prime data going right back to the late 80s and early 90s.

I still think about it at times and do miss the first ever webpage I wrote.

Thing is that from that experience u would expect me to be ever more cautious well the opposite is now true - I'm more aggressive but at the same time ensure I know what I'm doing AND I NEVER WORK TIRED. Its kinda like driving when you're tired - not wise no matter how good you are.

Hi

I managed to get some disk but I am not sure what to do.

Any help much appreciated.

Perhaps maybe a simplier way

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

Just a thought - I am assuming it's your user password you can't remember

It may be obvious, but worth a try

boot the machine normally, when it gets to the welcome screen where it lists the users, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL twice, the login screen will change, enter the username Administrator - leave the password blank, and hit enter

only works if the admin password is blank (which it should NEVER be, but a lot of computer preinstall CDs do so) but if it is blank, it will log you in normally

Re: trying to reset XP password( zing or paul maybe you could help)

Thanks Lord Nikon Just what I was after without hacking my PC apart. It may of been obvious but a really good safty feature if you the only one using the machine. :)
