Couldn't care less Suse has been a slapper all her life she's been in bed with Oracle too.

Never liked Suse for trying to partner who ever has the biggest ...................................... wallet

Why the problem with a bit of co-operation?

I thought everybody was in favour of a bit of cross platform compatibility?

brundles 03-11-2006 11:50

Re: SuSE in bed with Bill

I'm in favour of cross platform compatibility but I think there are too many things that provide the opportunity for MS to stitch up Linux in general as a result of this at a later date.

For exampling selling/supporting a Linux system setup in such a way as to give worse performance than a Windows system they then sell to replace it. Anyone remember the MS "Get the facts" campaign and the rather skewed comparisons?

I'm not saying it's all bad (the interop work between the two Office platforms sounds good) it's just that on MS' track record I can't help but feel this is more the start of a long term play against Linux in general.

You'd think so, wouldn't you?

Unix users (like Mac users) aren't so much a group of people, they are a sub-culture. They actually thrive on typing in 100 character command line commands, complete with memorising 20 different switches. They love having to compile every bit software they download, and then trawling the net for hours looking for the right dependency to make it compile. They hate improvements like this.

100% Agreed
Unix users are complete nerds.

Fortunately I'm a Linux user : Linux Is Not Unix

Problem is Micro$oft's idea of cross platform involves buying the other out then shutting it down.

The would be logical. However, historically, the computer industry has favoured incompatible platforms.

I never said it was, but its classed as Unix-like for a reason. Linux is drawn heavily from Unix in its history. I say Unix because its quick and easier, but everything I said applies to equally to Unix, Linux, and other derivatives (like BSD) platforms.

Linux Is Not Unix

Linux is frequently referred to as a Unix-like system. We cannot call Linux a Unix system because it has not passed the tests and certifications required by The Open Group to be officially called Unix. Practically speaking, however, Linux is functionally similar to Unix; it was designed to work like Unix and for most purposes it has accomplished that goal.

Unix users are complete nerds then? Does that mean Linux users are uppity pedants?

Well, the correct name for Linux is GNU/Linux, and of course, GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix", so technically speaking....

Oh, bugger, have I just proven your point, Punky?

:D

Getting back on topic, I've not watched the podcast but I'd be wary about anything supposed to promote cross-operability when MS is concerned, as they have a habit of taking open standards that others have adopted, modifying them to make them incompatible with the standard, releasing them as their own Microsoft-ised version, and then using their dominance of the market to dictate which version of said standards should be carried forward.

Are you telling me its not. Oh nooooooo. what do i do now ?

Just to add. I hate micro*****e and all it stands for. He's a copy cat who has a operating system with more holes in it than a sieve, you would have expected by now they might have fixed there operating system. God help us if he gets any control over Linux. And as for vista. Even that is full of holes

Novell takes payment from MS and subsequently drops development on a potential open source alternative to MS Exchange.

Coincidence? I don't think so...
