Disconnect it : reboot the cable modem (turn it on and off)

Plug everything back in together.

How are you connecting to the router ? CAT5 cable or wireless ?

see if you can ping the router

ping 192.168.1.1

Check u have an external ip address by logging onto the router

http://192.168.1.1/

Re: Linksys WRT54G HELP please please

You shouldnt need to touch anything for the moment : the router should pick up a new ip address from the cable modem and then nat it through to your macines.

dumb questions : is the cable from the router going to the cable modem correctly fitted ?

Try cloaning the mac address!

I had the same problem with a WRT54G v7!!!

Everything worked ok I just could not browse the internet via my wireless connection or my hard wired connection, once I cloaned the mac address everything worked just dandy!

Work that one out!

goto the config on the cable modem http://192.168.100.1/config.html
and disable dhcp

---------- Post added at 21:29 ---------- Previous post was at 21:28 ----------

save config and restart the cable modem.

disable any firewall that you are running and post me back the results of this command in a cmd prompt

start> run > cmd

ipconfig /all

i must say THANKYOU very very much for all your help i (we) have been trying all night well since 5pm thats 5hrs to get this router to work and it says easy set up on the box i have now placed this router back into its box and it will be on its way back to Amazon asap. The strange thing is that i plugged my old router back in and hey ho im up and running straight away. I think i will have to invest in a wireless access point and plug that into my wired router so i can use the laptop

have you set up the password for your account on the router and have you set ALL the settings correct >? Make sure about the PPOE or PPOA contacting your ISP... and when I say password I dont mean for the router admin right I mean like ur user and pwd for ie tiscali.com cetera cetera

NTL and TW are dynamic though.

Luappy13 04-11-2006 00:08

Re: Linksys WRT54G HELP please please

I know the IPS are dynamic but I mean if you can contact your router but it cannt connect to (PING) your ISP then unless its hardware failure, incorrect drivers for lan controllers then either firewall incorrectly setup (very unlikely unless you have a pile of poo) then it has to be pwd user and I setup a Linksys where that was required today on the NTL:tele.. .. ..

I ssume it is a TW:NTL conn right
???

Re: Linksys WRT54G HELP please please

That post doesn't make absolutely any sense to me Luappy13, but as far as I know you don't need to put your username and password ANYWHERE to connect to the Internet. The router will get the information automatically from the cable modem.

UncleBooBoo 04-11-2006 09:26

Re: Linksys WRT54G HELP please please

Connect the router and access it via 192.168.1.1 do a factory reset and power everything down! (modem, pc and router.)

Wait 5mins then power up your modem, wait a couple of mins then power up the router and wait a couple of mins now the pc!

see if that makes any difference if not check for new firmware version via the the linksys website and upgrade if available!

If that does not work, power down modem but leave everything else powered up then after 30 seconds try powering up the modem! (If memory serves me right my v7 would not connect via the net unless I powered up the modem after the router had been powered up.)

Re: Linksys WRT54G HELP please please

Yes! Just because you're not doesn't mean next door aren't... ;)

Assuming you've got it plugged into your system & are connecting wired at the moment...

SnoopZ 05-11-2006 18:31

Re: Linksys WRT54G HELP please please

If theres an option to disable wireless then disable it if you're not using it, otherwise, yes you need to secure your wireless from the outside world.
