ubuntu single user mode with networking

Hi,

Does anyone know how to bring up networking in single user mode.

Typically single user mode should have networking but mine just keep saying network not found weird.

I think that when I resynced my laptop after that disastrous upgrade attempt earlier it didnt completly resync

I'll try to resync again.

basically executes init 0 and drops you to a shell

Heh where would be if you went through what I just did.

I tried to upgrade dapper to edgy online whilst using the OS and it bombed out half way through.

I continued with a package rebuild and tried to continue as best as i could but it refused to do X for me....

At that point I risked doing a reboot : mistake got nothing just a blank screen

: Opened up a shell and rsynced a backup from the network : reboot and all is good except I notice the network doesnt start automatically i need to do ifdown and ifup.

Thats why I want to get into single user mode so that I can rsync the machine up properly....

ne way I'm gonna go for an upgrade via the cd now :) We'll see how that goes

OK I worked it out : I used an alternative ubuntu cd to boot me into the hd single user mode...

from there I just rsynced the machine and sweet everything is cool

Sorry to steal your thread but seeing as you seem to have sorted your issue ;)

Does anyone know if you can let a windows PC on your network access the drives on your Linux (Ubuntu) box while linux is running?

I've installed the latest Ubuntu. 6.10 I think it is. :) IS there a guide (it's my first flirt with Linux) :)

one good thing about linux is the wealth of documentation...

I'm searching for the easy guide that discribes how to use gnome and kde (these are your desktop environments or the gui u can see - underneath that is linux) cant find it i'm a bit tired :o

You shoudl really be able to cofigure network shares networking etc from the gui once confident with that head for the shell

Yeh thats the old fashioned way of doing it.....

I'm sure I saw a gui to set up network shares : please excuse me as I'm new to the gui side myself but have been using linux shell for over 10 years too long to remember.

search for
"gnome samba"
"kde samba"
etc etc

This is a top idea : There are a lot of smart guys on here who have knowledge in different areas... I'm hopeless giving newb advice as I've never used the easy route until now but I'm still learning heh.

Hopefully we make it simple and get it stickied - might even win over some windoze users too

This is why the masses can't get on with Linux. All I want to do is setup a network share so that my other PC can get at the files it needs to function on my PC.

To install the Linux (self-extracting) file



Follow these instructions:



   1. At the terminal: Type:

   2. Enter the root password.

   3. Change to the directory in which you want to install. Type:

      For example, to install the software in the /usr/java/ directory, Type:

      cd /usr/java/



      Note about root access: To install the JRE in a system-wide location such as /usr/local, you must login as the root user to gain the necessary permissions. If you do not have root access, install the JRE in your home directory or a subdirectory for which you have write permissions.

   4. Change the permission of the file you downloaded to be executable. Type:

      chmod a+x jre-1_5_0-linux-i586.bin

   5. Verify that you have permission to execute the file. Type:

      ls -l







Make sure the installation file has executable permission



   6. Start the installation process.Type:

      ./jre-1_5_0-linux-i586.bin



      This displays a binary license agreement. Read through the agreement. Press the spacebar to display the next page. At the end, enter yes to proceed with the installation.

   7. The JRE is installed into its own directory. In this example, it is installed in the /usr/java/jre1.5.0 directory. When the installation has completed, you will see the word Done.







The installation completes



   8. The JRE is installed in jre1.5.(version number) sub-directory under the current directory. In this case, the JRE is installed in the /usr/java/jre1.5.0 directory. Verify that the jre1.5.0 sub-directory is listed under the current directory. Type:

      ls







Verify the installation filename



The installation is now complete. Skip to the Enable and Configure section.

Shaun are you using gnome or kde ?

From KDE you can set up network shares without directly touch samba :

> system settings > sharing

In gnome I think its there is an easy way too but I just don't know :o I'm sure whilst looking around I stumbled across it ?

Any gnome experts in the house ?

Gnome as that's what comes with Ubuntu. I could install the Kubuntu upgrade but I'm guessing that'll be a drama in itself.

And I was thinking it'd be easy to get my head around it once I had time to play. :erm: :(

Give the live cd a whirl if you dont like go back to gnome for me personally I didnt like gnome.

You won't need to install Kubuntu, you can just install the KDE software on top of your current Ubuntu installation.

There'll be a HowTo over at the ubuntuforums website.

Also, as I just dropped in to Gnome to check this, you have a Shared Drives tool available in Gnome... just click Computer -> Control Center -> Shared Folders :)

Right, time to go back to KDE

I'm addicted to this cr** (check the top posters !) It was a last resort ditch attempt to escape . Nah this place is cool a lot of nice ppl on (maybe too nice @times).

flippin heck one click with automatix and i got all the codecs i need plus xmms plus streamripper awesome.

I regret not having converting to linux desktop earlier now :o

Everything runs smoother faster with less memory than windoze....

Theres only one thing left to make my life complete : synce kde-sync with my pda... it didnt go too well when I last tried :o
